Book about teen(?) boy (maybe 14 or so? Possibly 12?) who moves with mother to a commune. I think the MC's name starts with a "J." He learns farm work there from a guy whose name starts with a J. The boy also learns to trick his own brain by someone else by using a pillow or something as a substitute for an alarm because they don't have digital clocks at the commune, and he teaches someone to read, I think, and has a friend who's a girl.

BIG SPOILER ALERT:
Eventually MC tries to escape the commune (pretty sure "escape" is in the title!!!) and the cult leader's son gives him a chance to use the phone and explains that the commune started out with good intentions.
