And thanks for pointing out the issue with the spiders. I never thought of it that way before. I can assure you I'm an animal lover with one dog and a cat, and a person who will gently lift a spider out of my house instead of killing it.

I might have to rewrite the preface.

The reason I'm using the story is that (animal cruelty aside) it really resonates with me as a metaphor for how depression crushed me for all those years, and why I hate the illness.

Is a great book and if you do change that up I think a gentler opening might feel more welcoming to people who are already struggling. But I am also sure it appeals to others exactly as it is, I can only record my own response. It's a very tough gig to meet everyone's needs in such a book - but you make an awesome crack at it!

Also EM thank you for the thorough review. I very much appreciate it! I struggled with a few different endings and made a gut decision to go with this one. (In the original ending, she met Jane. Second version, no one new at the park. Third one was a new stranger. And the one I ultimately went with, well you know. Maybe I'll do a different edition in the future.)

It is a very powerful and powerfully written book. My response is just my own. The intensity of that response speaks to how well you wrote it, IMO. Keep true to your own outcomes and us readers will respond to that however we do :)
