I like this idea and I have plenty that would work on my tbr.

A book by an author who has been in the business for at least 21 years

I especially like the 2021 reference, but might tweak it to an author who published their first book before 2000, since as I read the the author would still need to be publishing.

I really like this prompt too

message 404: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I was thinking about a book connected to one of the five senses.
The sight one could be about something you look through like a telescope, window, or watch like TV or film, or lack of sight, someone who is blind.
The hearing could be where music is featured or some sort of narrator
Taste could be connected to any food
Smell could be flowers etc.
Touch could be anything from a simple touch to a cuddle or embrace or hot and cold.

What do others think?

I am pretty sure this was nominated a few times last year as a multi week and again as a single week prompt. I'm not remembering specifically why it didn't get through, maybe too broad? Hopefully enough people like it this year to push it through.

If you had it as one prompt, addressing any of the five senses, that would be plenty broad. I would think, it would be title, cover or subject matter.

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) Robin wrote: "If you had it as one prompt, addressing any of the five senses, that would be plenty broad. I would think, it would be title, cover or subject matter."

It would be too broad in my opinion just because any book can relate to one of the 5 senses in some way. I have 5 books witting next to me right now and just looking at the covers, I have 3 with faces/eyes that fit vision, one with waves on it that would fit sound or touch and one has a giant nose on the cover (smell, obviously). I think making it a plot based prompt would be the most difficult, a cover prompt would be the easiest and as a title prompt it would be somewhat difficult but still fun to research.

message 410: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 4017 comments Mod
Good point, and I agree that plot points are the hardest for a lot of prompts because you don't always know what a book is "about" before you read it. Several books I read this year I thought I would use for a certain prompt and found they worked better for a different one because of the theme, characters, setting, etc., which I wasn't aware of when I started reading the book.

You could go with "A book in which one of the senses plays a major role in the plot". It may be a bit restrictive, but it would cover deaf and/or blind characters, things that are stolen (touch), books about food (smell/taste). It could be fun to see all the possibilities that people come up with.

I think I'm going to wait until we get another month or two under our belts before submitting the Best Books of the Month prompt. People have really been using the lists more now, but I want a few more options for people to choose from.

I wasn't able to suggest this prompt before the 15 were reached in the poll because I just now logged on to my computer. In the future, is there a way to suggest it for voting even if I can't do it right when that thread opens?

(Sorry, I'm still mostly a newbie who hasn't ever suggested a prompt before!)

message 417: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments It's not guaranteed but if there's support for your idea here you just say you'll miss the thread and you're happy for someone else to submit it. Then if someone really likes it and has the opportunity they can put it forward for you.

The suggestions threads do go at quite a pace near the start but you should get a chance, especially as they mix up the posting times.

message 418: by Kat (new)

Kat | 567 comments Yes suggestions are going quickly so far but this usually changes depending on the timing and how far we get into the process. There are lots more polls still to come so it can always be submitted later.

I haven't suggested anything yet as I either missed the poll (I was asleep for the entirety of this one) or like the other suggestions too much and wanted to get them on the list instead.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11215 comments Mod
Irene, I agree with Ellie and Kat. The first few polls usually go quickly, but as we get further along with the process, they will take a bit longer to fill up and hopefully you'll have your shot at them.

Just a head's up, Poll 4 will be our multi-week poll.

message 420: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) So, since Emily mentioned multiweek prompts I was going to suggest:

An author with 14 or more letters in their name
AND
An author with 7 or fewer letters in their name

Thoughts?

That's a good pairing. Of course it should be the way the author's name is generally written, for instance on GR. And it sounds like you intended first name plus last name, or if they go by 3 names, like Diane Wynne Jones, it would be the whole thing.

message 422: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments 7 or fewer is quite challenging, is there a specific reason for 7 and 14?

message 423: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 4017 comments Mod
Is it possibly because they add up to 21 for 2021? If not, it should be!

Nadine in NY Jones | 2286 comments Ellie wrote: "7 or fewer is quite challenging, is there a specific reason for 7 and 14?"

It is challenging! But I was surprised at how many authors I found on my TBR:
Ken Liu
Zen Cho
Kim Thúy
Lucy Tan
F.C. Yee (do initials count?)
Joe Ide
Joe Hill
Joan He
Temi Oh
Abi Daré
S.A. Cosby
Hua Yu

... and at that point I stopped looking. I'm sure there are more.

Ellie wrote: "7 or fewer is quite challenging, is there a specific reason for 7 and 14?"

I hadn't thought of that, but it sounds like another great reason for me!

The reason I went with 7/14 was because looking at my bookshelf, most of the author's names (full names as published on the cover) were between 7 and 14 letters. Trying to find authors with only 6 letters was difficult, as was finding any names with 15 letters. Choosing 7 and 14 just made it a little less challenging and might get through voting easier.

Yes, initials and middle names would count if that is how the author publishes their name on the cover

I like this suggestion - there are lots of authors who are couples e.g. Tahereh Mafi and Ransom Riggs and a few parent-child authors too, like Stephen King and Joe Hill, so it should be achievable.

Got it, thank you guys for explaining this to me! I'll wait until Poll 5 then to suggest it :)

Also, could someone explain what the wildcard is to me? I've heard it mentioned a few times but can't seem to find it in the FAQ's.

I love this one! Especially because, as an extra perk, they add up to 21! I generally really like the multi-week prompt idea this group has going, it's always the one I'm most curious about. In my first ATY challenge it was even four book related to the four elements.
PopSugar had a whole set of prompts relating to 2020 this year, and I also thought that was a relly neat idea. So I absolutely welcome prompts that somehow reference 2021 for next year.

If there's a prompt you don't want to do you can replace it with a wildcard, either a freebie read or pick a prompt that didn't make it/from another year.

Oh, I see! Is it just a one-time thing? Or is there no limit to how many we can use?

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Irene wrote: "Oh, I see! Is it just a one-time thing? Or is there no limit to how many we can use?..."

It's quite a relaxed group so I don't think anyone would mind if you use it several times. Some people customise the challenge to fit their own goals anyway.

message 437: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I'll just add, sometimes we can get quite passionate during voting but by the time the prompt comes round we're just winging it and going "that book will do". Well, that's what happens to me anyway!

Sound great! I do sometimes stretch prompts a little but I generally try to be super strict with how I do them because of minor OCD!

Also @Amy, I like that idea of the <7 and >14 letter prompt! I enjoy multi-week prompts in general and this one seems doable (assuming initials count!)

Multi-week prompts tend to be love them or hate them ha! I really enjoyed our prompt this year (connected by the same theme), but I tend to enjoy shorter ones (2-week or 3-week) over the longer ones. I hated the elements one haha!

I'm a little tempted to suggest the Beauty, Brains, Brawn prompt that didn't make it in last year.

message 440: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I really liked this year's multi. I, also prefer the shorter ones. I would rather have two 2 week ones to one 4 week one.

I am the same. I'm not a fan of multiweek prompts in general, but two 2 week prompts would be much better than one 4 week prompt, in my opinion.

Oh Emily, BBB......you made my brain hurt a little remembering the battle to get that one in last year lol

message 442: by Avery (last edited Jul 15, 2020 09:35AM) (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments Still obsessed with the BBB prompt... I feel a little bad suggesting repeat prompts, but I love it. Here are my examples for that one, plus some added ideas if someone else wants to suggest it!

Beauty - a book by or about an artist, celebrity, model, influencer, or someone you find attractive; a book with the word 'beautiful', 'pretty', 'art', etc. in the title; a graphic novel, coffee table book, book with a beautiful cover, or book with illustrations; a book related to Beauty & The Beast or Sleeping Beauty; inner beauty

Brains - a book by or about a scientist, doctor, scholar, investigator, or teacher; a book with the word 'smart', 'brain', 'think', etc. in the title; a text book, book for school/work, puzzle book, brain candy book, book that teaches you something, or book that makes you think; a book about zombies

Brawn - a book by or about an athlete, firefighter or someone in the military; a book with the word 'power', 'fight', 'strong', etc. in the title; a physically large book or book with a hefty page count; a book about sports, war, superheros, inner strength, or the fight to win something

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11215 comments Mod
The battle was more about the voting process than it was about the prompt itself! Hopefully we have resolved the issues around the multi-week voting and it will be a smoother process this year.

See, I just love that BBB prompt. So many options!

message 444: by Nadine in NY (last edited Jul 15, 2020 09:29AM) (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2286 comments TBH I was never that into the BBB prompt, because if it's a multiprompt I really want the books to be related in some way (same format, same author, something), but I just had a brainflash that I could read all graphic novels. That satisfies my need for them to be linked in some way, and it's pretty easy to find comics that perfectly fit each category.

Beauty: a graphic novel with beautiful art, like Ascender Vol. 2: The Dead Sea or a graphic novel about a beauty, like Fairest, Volume 1: Wide Awake

Brains: a graphic novel about scientists or about the brain, such as The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage or Verax: A Graphic History of Electronic Surveillance or Neurocomic

Brawn: a graphic novel about a really strong person - almost any superhero will do here, although Superman / Superwoman and Captain Marvel would all be particularly appropriate.

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments Here's a few random groups of things floating around in my head for multi-weeks, but they definitely all still need to be refined and thought-out more.

4 books related to the 4 pillars of health (nutrition, exercise, relaxation, sleep)
- books related to food, sports, a hobby of yours, and your dreams

3 books related to "Eat Pray Love"
- books related to food, religion, and romance

3 books related to "Past, Present, Future"
- time period/genre of book (historical, contemporary, sci-fi)
- setting of book (place you lived in the past, place you live now, place you want to live in the future)
- character age/family status (child/teen/adult, single/engaged/married)
- topic (reminds you of your childhood, a hobby/job you have now, a hobby/job you wish to have)

3-5 books related to the Spice Girls (Baby Spice, Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Ginger Spice, Posh Spice)
- books related to your childhood, horror/thriller books, book related to sports, cooking, and upper-class/royalty

3 books related to "Mind Body Soul"

3 books related to "Two Truths and a Lie"
- 2 non-fictions and 1 fiction
- 2 real life places and 1 fantasy place

Thank you for these examples Avery, it made me really excited for this one!

How will voting for multi-week prompts be this year?

message 448: by Conny (new)

Conny | 648 comments I had a peek at upcoming events in 2021 and learned that there will be two solar eclipses (one annular, one total) next year. So I've been trying to think of ways to turn that into a prompt. So far I've come up with:

Two books related to the annular and total eclipses in 2021
-- "annular" stems from "ring," so that opens up a HUGE range of possibilities, from Lord of the Rings and Ringu to non-fiction about goldsmithing and anything wedding
-related.
-- "total" could refer to, well, a total eclipse actually playing a role (I just read "He Said/She Said" by Erin Kelly where that is the case) but also to anything total, totalitarian, the totality of X ...

A variation may be:
Two books related to celestial bodies (could specify sun vs. moon, planet vs. fixed star, star vs. galaxy)

Two books related to natural phenomena observed in the sky (solar/lunar eclipse, comet, aurora borealis ...)

And I learned that Wikipedia will turn 20 in January 2021, so for the poll after the next (no multiples) I would really like to suggest:

A book related to a featured or random article on Wikipedia on any given day

message 449: by Sara (new)

The Spice Girls one made me laugh, but I particularly like the Past, Present, Future idea. I love the simplicity of choosing a historical, contemporary and book set in the future. I might even try to find 3 books from the same author that fit if I could think of one.
