I was so proud of myself thinking the bee one was The Murmur of Bees. Wrong. Sigh.

Nadine in NY Jones | 2286 comments I JUST got Bennett Supplies - I was a bit annoyed, because most of the picture didn't really seem to have much to do with the book. My daughter and I were definitely focusing on the wrong things!! I JUST read that book a few weeks back and it took me days to think of it here!!

I've got SIX left to figure out: the Thomas' Treasures, the telescope, the All & Ohs bookshop, the Beef & Lamb Bazaar, the metro station, and the angry people stomping on breakfast cereal. What is up with the cereal stomper???

I got the Funiculi Funicula one early on because of the clues in the picture, but I didn't (and still don't) understand what "Funiculi Funicula" had to do with the book. Maybe if I'd read that book I would get it. I just got lucky, I'd been talking about the book and so it was in the forefront of my brain.

Got the time one! (view spoiler) That was so obscure.

Thank you - now I've got the metro station - I had been SO CLOSE but somehow not thinking of it. I read that book, too!

Kat | 567 comments There's a fun second where you feel incredible for working it out but then feel like an idiot for not working it out sooner.

I saw a suggestion which said you should say things aloud. I sat for about 10 minutes just repeating "bag of ham." At least it kept me distracted for a few minutes.

LOL yes that is exactly how I feel!!!

I'm down to three left. I'm muttering all sorts of things :-D

message 2211: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Hahaha. "Bag of ham." I so relate. I can't tell you how many times I was like "Love bee. Love buzz. Buzz love. Buzz heart. Heart buzz. Bee love." And yet I still didn't get it until Aimee practically whispered it in my ear.

I still have 7 left.

message 2213: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I gave it to my colleagues, some who read a decent amount but none really keep up with new books and they were completely stumped. I think they only managed the jewellers when I told them they would definitely know that one!

All & Oh's was definitely a muttering one for me. I definitely kicked myself when I got it because I had got the location clue but took me ages still.

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments The jewellers is one of the last ones that I still can't get, and I have a feeling I'm going to kick myself when I figure it out. That and the royal dog, and the sign above the jewellers.

From your posting Nancy, I was able to parcel out the Bennett one. So I'm up to a whopping five now. I'm still lost on most of the others. You will definitely kick yourself over the jewellers. What the heck is up with the ham in the bag, stomping cereal and the bees?

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments It's funny, the ham book I'd never even heard of until this group.

For Thomas' (view spoiler)

For All & Oh (view spoiler)

I don't actually remember what the Beef & Lamb one was now, it took a while to parse that one out! I

Ok I got the sign one, thanks for that hint, it helped. It's actually on my list for ATY 2021!

Got the dog one too, finally. FFS! Also on my list for 2021!

message 2220: by Kat (new)

Kat | 567 comments There were only a couple I've actually read but had heard of the rest or seen them talked about on here. The only one I've never heard of is the coffee shop one which I googled and still have no clue.

A lot of them are on my TBR for next year.

Thanks, that did it. I've never heard of that book. Explains why I couldn't think of it!!! That's the second book I've never heard of (I had never heard of the one for Canal sign, either, but somehow we guessed it - just randomly entering things and it was a hit.)

message 2225: by Nancy (last edited Nov 17, 2020 12:03PM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I got the 3 on the bottom right right away, and the cereal one too. The rest took some digging and massive hints from others.

I hadn't heard of several of them, including the Canal sign, but some creative Googling helped figure it out.

Thomas So changing direction. Has anyone filled their list yet? I have picked all mine but now need to redress the gender balance

message 2227: by Kristina (new)

oh BINGO!! I got them all now, thanks for those clues!!!

I never heard of the Thomas' book, but I was just desperately trying any title at that point hahaha

And All & Oh's I STILL couldn't get even with your clue, but then I told my daughter and she started saying it and SHE got it. And now the clues in the windows of that one make sense to me. Major duh moment, because I was actually trying those other books as answers so I was SOOOO close.

message 2229: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments The Caboodles game is really clever!! I only got about 4 initially, but am up to 15 now, from people's clues (thanks, Ellie, Nancy, Aimee!) and from googling random words!

I'm still stuck on the coffee shop, the beef and lamb, the dog, the telescope, and the monster with the phone (which no one else has mentioned having trouble with, so I suspect it's an obvious one that I'm just missing - although I'm not a horror/sci-fi/fantasy reader, in general, so that might have something to do with it!). I'll keep plugging away!

Nice to know I'm not the only one struggling with the monster - what on earth could the phone mean???!!

And I'm still letting the other clues percolate through my brain for the others...

message 2232: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Those of you saying "monster" are so close! For many of them, I just typed words in the pictures into Goodreads until I pulled up a title that was close. That was another one I had never heard of.

Ah, yes! I thought I'd tried that for the monster one (typing words into GR), but perhaps not, because I tried it again and got the answer!

And the dog!! Honestly!! I worked it out about an hour ago, but I'd been trying (view spoiler)

The dog is the one that drives me crazy! I'm with Kathryn and I've tried all those options and still stuck.

- sunflowers turns out I can't read
- roommate needed
- damn Thomas and his treasures

I wouldn't even say the dog one is symbolic - as far as I can make out, the book itself doesn't have anything to do with (view spoiler)

message 2239: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I only got the dog one when I saw someone on Twitter say one of the covers was hot pink. I find it interesting some of the books people are saying they've never heard of, they've had quite big campaigns in the UK...but I guess that's the point, Caboodle is run by National Book Tokens which are meant to be spent in UK bookshops, so those who use them might be more likely to have seen the books in windows.

That's a good point. Although I have heard of 14 of the 19 I've worked out, and I'm not British (I'm Australian), but I haven't read many of them - only 3. I haven't heard of the books for the cafe, the beef and lamb bazaar, All and Oh's, the monster, or the canal.

message 2241: by Nadine in NY (last edited Nov 18, 2020 04:36AM) (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2286 comments The clues for books I'd never heard of were, of course, the hardest for me! I got lucky with one, but the other two - Thomas' Treasures and Beef and Lamb Bazaar - were my last two clues, and I just started randomly typing things into Goodreads and trying all of those titles until I got a hit. I didn't get the same feeling of "oh of course!" satisfaction with those, of course, since I'd never heard of them.

I think they are both British authors? If that helps anyone narrow it down ...

Yes they are both British.
The Beef and Lamb one is YA so if you don't read a lot of UK YA books then I can see it wouldn't be easy to get. Thomas' Treasures is part of a well-known trilogy, people may have heard of the first book even if they haven't heard of this one.

I’d heard of the canal’s author, and I’m not a fan, so hence why I’m not aware of many of their other books! Never heard of the cafe one, or the author, but the story sounds intriguing!

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I read the coffee shop one recently for ATY! It's quite sad.

message 2246: by Jette (new)

Jette | 339 comments Does anyone else adjust the start and end dates of the challenge? I have two weeks off at Christmas and usually do a lot of reading during this time. I guess I could continue on the reject challenge that I started a couple of weeks ago, but I have at least three titles on hold that will be available during that frame that I really want to read.

Christmas presents can wait, but good books...never.

message 2247: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I do not, the only thing I'll do is count a book if I started it in December and finish in January. I like to read Christmas-y books in December so those fill my time. I also have a backlog on NetGalley so plan to use the next 6 weeks catching up on those.
