[2021] The Wild Discussion
Voting thread is up for Poll 19 if you'd like to go discuss!

I'm not planning to start until 2021 since it's a side challenge to the 2021 ATY challenge but you can do whatever works for you!

That said doing a side challenge for all the tarot cards keeps calling my name too.

I’ve been thinking of doing a side challenge based on reading a book related to each of the Hogwarts school subjects for some time, but I’ve never been able to read more than 52 books since I started this challenge. However, I’m about to finish the aty challenge in the next couple of weeks so perhaps I’ll start it this year.

I was in a challenge group on Goodreads (Wacky Challenges) and they had a Harry Potter one that had you read 7 books for each of the Hogwarts subjects. It ended up being like 150 books total, but I finished it in a couple of years.

Wow great for you, Emily! I saw that challenge a while back but it was just too many books. One book per subject would have been enough for me, not necessarily every subject for every year (although if I go back a few years and double count books for that challenge and the Aty challenge perhaps I’ve completed a couple of Hogwarts grades....hum something to do during the xmas holidays).
While we are waiting for our last group of prompts, don't forget to update the community spreadsheet!

This challenge sounds like so much fun!! I would love to do one per subject, to keep it more manageable/simple. It's nice to be able to stretch it out over a few years!

Here’s the group and the challenge link Emily did

Thank you!! Just joined the group!
Thanks for posting Sophie! I left the group when I became a mod over here because it was so time consuming to update every time I finished a book.... at one point, I had like 19 challenges going on!
Ok so I was going through my votes from this year to decide which prompt I am going to use for the suggestion that didn't make it in. Here's my stats from the pre-poll through Poll 18:
- 88 total upvotes
Of my upvotes:
- 27 prompts that I voted for that made it on the list (in the poll I voted for it or in subsequent polls)
- 8 close calls
- 4 polarizing
- 2 in the bottom
Pretty pleased with that... I voted for over half of the prompts on the list. Still not sure about which one I'll use for the reject prompt though. Poll 19 is a close poll so make sure y'all vote.

i like that you keep the stats! it's so interesting to look back on and helpful for the suggestion that didn't make it prompt.
which prompts do you have to choose from?
which prompts do you have to choose from?
Here's what I'm considering:
- A book featuring a theme of women overcoming systemic obstacles
- A book written by or about a person with a physical disability
- A non-fiction book on a topic inspired by a fiction book you've read
- A book that is mostly written as a series of documents (assuming mode of communication doesn't make it in Poll 19)
- A character or author with an under-represented queer identity (TQIA+, not LGB)
- A long book (assuming it doesn't make it in Poll 19)
I like to choose my prompt ahead of time so it doesn't feel like a freebie but it's really a toss up right now for me.

That's what I'm talking about -- trying to figure out which prompt to use for the suggestion that didn't make it in prompt. But there are so many good options!

My mistake I thought you were talking about a rejects challenge. The choice is straightforward for me because I have a book i really want to read that flashes between two decades. If it somehow wins in the final poll ( which I doubt given how little its been mentioned in the voting comments) i will suddenly be unsure

I'm going to do "trapped together" for my prompt that didn't make it, it's one of my favorite tropes.

I'm going to do "trapped toge..."
i did consider Trapped Together. But the only book I particularly liked that fit that is One by One and I need that for "author of one of your best reads in 2020"

I tend to think a prompt being discussed in the discussion thread reduces its chance of getting voted in. If there are two prompts that I equally don't want and only have one down vote between them I'm more likely to down vote the one that seems popular. Though the reverse is also true for ones I equally like.

Anxious People fits and I'm dying to read that, and there's also The Hunting Party or Seven Days of Us.

Wait I just started Anxious People and I'm so curious if anyone has read it, and if they've ever watched the show "Fleabag"... They are so similar!!! I need to know if anyone else sees the connection!

I do that, too. Based on results, I'm clearly not the only one!

So I’m going to combine them and read 4 BIPOC retellings each based on a different card suit.
Ok I don’t think, I know I’m cheating! 🤦🏽♀️

So you are not really cheating....you are in fact 'Bringing it on' (BIO) (I think!)

5 were polarizing, and I don't keep track of close calls. 5 of my Top votes ended up in the Bottom the week they were suggested.
Of my Bottom votes, only 4 made the final list. 11 of the prompts that I put in my Bottom votes were also in the Bottom according to the group vote.
Obviously this excludes Poll 19 since we don't know the results yet.

Some people opt to add on to their 52 week challenge with what we call a "Rejects Challenge". People who do a rejects challenge just pick the number of prompts that did not make it on the list and they create their own mini-challenge. Some people use prompts that they voted for that didn't make it. Others choose to do close call and polarizing prompts. Some just make up their own list of 10 or 15 or 20 to supplement the full reading challenge. It's totally up to you!
(Also, of course, you do not have to do a rejects challenge lol. As Thomas mentioned, you will use one of those rejected prompts to fill the "suggestion that didn't make it in" prompt on the 52 list.)

Out my 123 upvotes:
29 made the list
9 were close calls
10 were polarizing
6 were in the bottom
Only 2 of my bottom votes made the list.

The easiest way to tackle it is to go with a book that has the word of a season in the title. Winter Garden, The Summer Book, etc.

I may read a sports-related book as I associate sports with a particular season (i.e. winter for hockey, baseball for summer). In the coming week(s), the mods will be opening threads for each of the topics where we can discuss our interpretations and possible choices. Hopefully that thread will help you get some thoughts!

Thomas- Like Emily said, pop the season (or a seasonal word) into the search. Also check the listopia and the community spreadsheet’s 2021 planning tab. There are lots of books that would fit that aren’t, for example, Christmas books or “beach reads”. I listed a few in a previous thread. Another one I thought of, for summer, is Sag Harbor by Colson Whitehead. I know he’s a popular author right now. I have a book about Lady Guinevere (Arthurian tale) with the word Autumn in the title. That’s my current choice. I’ve found that for the prompts I’m not super excited about that I always find something interesting! A book appears when I need it.

Thanks. I have just realized I have a book called Summer by Edith Wharton on my kindle. Would that work?
Yes, Summer by Edith Wharton would be perfect, provided it is long enough. I think it is classed as a novella.

Oh is there a length rule?
