I have not! It's another one that managed to get away from me (and I own it!)

I love the idea of a 'comfort read' in next year's list. I have specific books that I think of as comfort reads, like The Hidden Staircase and Pride and Prejudice, but also whole genres like classic mystery. I like exploring new stuff and challenging myself, but sometimes it's nice to pick up a book already knowing I'm going to have a good time reading it.

message 1503: by Avery (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments I like comfort read also, and would vote for it! I still think it’s a bit different than the humor or inspiration prompts though, so maybe we could suggest comfort read soon and then wait on the humor/inspiration.

message 1504: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments We don't have any recommendation prompts yet, what about a book recommended by a book social media source? A book blogger (celebrity or not), Bookstagram, Booktube, etc.

I was also pondering set in a book store or library.

message 1505: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11215 comments Mod
Nancy, those types of prompts have typically been hit or miss in this group. You may be better off saying something like "A book recommended by someone important to you" or "A book recommended by someone you admire" or "A book recommended by someone you follow".

That way, people who don't follow any book people on social media can still participate by using a loved one or celebrity or librarian.

message 1506: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Yeah, I would not include a social media presence you follow because as you said many don't. I don't actually, other than Modern Mrs. Darcy. But I thought it would be easy enough to find a book blogger, there are so many.

I personally don't like the "someone important to you or you admire" prompts. I wanted the prompt to be specifically a book-related social media site.

But if you don't think it will do well I'll stick with the book-related setting.

message 1507: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments What about a book recommended by someone with similar taste in books? Could be someone you follow on social media because you read the same genres, could be a friend or family member that you like to share books with, could be someone on Goodreads that you do the "shelf compare" thing with.

message 1508: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments "Recommended by..." prompts are always a freebie for me. I choose a book I want to read and then find somewhere that it's been recommended (because honestly pretty much every book that's been written has been mentioned by someone somewhere on the internet). Yes, it's my choice to cheat on that type of prompt, but still, I dislike them.

message 1509: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Actually dalex if I'm being honest, I do the same thing. Typically books recommended are high profile ones I already have on my tbr.

Any objections to set in a book store or library?

I like books with a bookstore or library setting, although it is one I've done a few times before. I'd likely vote for it, but it depends what else it is up against (and definitely wouldn't downvote it).

message 1511: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I like the bookstore setting, but as Rachel says, it depends on what the other prompts are. wouldn't be a downvote though

RE: Cover collages: I think some people add them into their yearly plans. Maybe also on infinity lists? My infinity lists have one for each challenge. I'm collage obsessed LOL.

message 1513: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I would definitely vote for a comfort read for next year. I also have a ton of library/bookstore related books here, so even though like Rachel said, I've done it several times in other challenges, I'm not sure we have done it here in this group, and I would vote for it.

I like the comfort read idea. I'm not thrilled about the recommendation idea. I do receive several daily and weekly emails about books as well as reading the New York Times Book Review and Bookmarks magazine. I get a lot of ideas from them. But I don't follow any celebrities, and I find that most of my friends have different tastes from me. I used to get recommendations from other listeners on Audible but they took away that feature a couple years ago where you could follow people.

How about this... does any one have any ideas on where we should place the prompts we've already picked on our list? "The end" prompt will most definitely be at.. the end.. of the list. But anyone else have other preferences?

message 1518: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I just wondered are we going to ignore the 2021 Olympics, as we had Japan this year?

message 1519: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments I'm getting Goodread notification withdrawals after the excitement of the read-a-thon.

Didn't we have a prompt this year as book related to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan? I think with that one and the three in Popsugar this year, I'm a bit burnt out on Olympic themed prompts, even though it didn't actually happen.

That said, I'm also the small minority that actually finds the Olympics to be incredibly boring and waste of my tv time lol

message 1520: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I'm not bothered about the Olympics, just that it is a world event. I do feel sorry for all the athletes that were going to them, and were unable go through no fault of their own, and those that will never qualify for them again. But suppose that is all part of life. Lots of people have lost out this year.

I have no desire for any Olympics related prompts, this years was a down vote for me.

message 1523: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3851 comments I’m having a hard time coming up with something original or at least not done in a few years. A few ideas I’ve been thinking about include:
- More than one primary setting
- 2 timelines
- Clouds on the cover.
I have several books with beautiful covers with clouds and am reading one right now! I live in a city where we average 310 sunny days per year (average in the US is 205) and I love our cloudy days!

i love books with multiple timelines or even dual/multi povs! i'm reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and it has both

Unfortunately, I personally doubt that the Olympics will happen in 2021. It would be great if they do as I do enjoy them, but it's too hard to tell how things will be around the world. I ended up just reading a book set in Japan for the prompt this year.

There was a glitch for about 24 hours where you could post new items but couldn't edit any existing ones. It seems to have been fixed today.

A couple ideas I had for prompts have been proposed by other people, and then I found I didn't even vote for them! I like multiple timelines and I am fine with multiple POVs but I know some people dislike them.

I will check out Addie LaRue, it sounds interesting.

I'd like to request that both the "published in 2021" and the "GR Choice Awards" be a little later in the year for those of us who are library dependent and facing long waitlists for hot books. Not necessarily at the end of the year--just not at the beginning.

Do we know exactly when the Grand Egyptian Museum will open? Maybe that prompt could coincide if we have a date for the opening.

I will be reading in random order so it doesn't really matter to me. So often I have found that a book I thought I was reading for one prompt fit better in another one. I admire those of you who can do this week by week but if that was a requirement, I'm sure I wouldn't have joined this group.

message 1530: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments We could do the 100 black authors during February for black history month.

The Muslim prompt during Ramadan

And while possibly too political, can do the race/race relations to honor Breonna Taylor’s death (March 13th).

message 1531: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Brown | 264 comments Alicia wrote: "And while possibly too political, can do the race/race relations to honor Breonna Tayl..."

I'd suggest instead doing the race relations prompt during late June (Juneteenth) , still relevent, but a bit less raw

message 1532: by Conny (new)

Conny | 648 comments Apparently July 15 is Arctic Sea Ice Day, so I'd suggest placing the ice-related prompt in that week. And I was thinking that perhaps the Favorite Things prompt could be a good opener for the year, set the tone? That is, unless the second chances prompt is resubmitted and makes it that time around, because that would obviously be awesome.
April 10 is National Siblings Day, so that week could be slotted for the siblings prompt.
I'm sure I'll think of more when I have time to research^^

Robin, I am not planning on reading in order either, but for some reason, I care a lot about how the list is organized haha!

These are all fantastic ideas! *frantically scribbles notes*

Do we want to keep the multiweek next to each other? Or split up?

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 400 comments Emily wrote: "Do we want to keep the multiweek next to each other? Or split up?"

thanks for doing this, Emily!

I for one would prefer the multiweek prompts next to each other for spreadsheet organizational purposes if possible

message 1535: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3851 comments These are all great organizational ideas! I don’t read in order but do try to check off the top ones first, when I can. I like keeping the multi- week prompts next to each other. Those are ones I struggle with and I find it’s easier if I read them sequentially.

message 1536: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (grapefruit) | 57 comments I'm all in for the comfort read and the book-related setting. Looking forward to the next voting then :)

message 1537: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I agree that the multiweeks *should* be next to each other

Other thoughts:

Ice - I'd like to see the ice prompt in the northern hemisphere summertime so July 15th would be perfect

A book published in 2021 - nearer the end of the year, no earlier than Sept or October

Race Relations and Black Authors - I believe Juneteeth would be a little less (potentially) traumatic for the race relations prompt. Maybe US today black authors prompt author on Breanna's birthday? It is a more positive, uplifting prompt during a time that will be very painful for many people.

Immigrant - This is US centric, but we "celebrate" Constitution day and Citizenship Day on Sept 17th, the Immigrant prompt would fit there.

magic - Harry Houdini was born March 24th

World Literature - World Literature day is September 8th

Goodreads Choice Awards - Maybe during the week that voting starts for the 2021 awards, the first Thursday in November

Favorite Things - Maria Von Trapp's birthday is January 26th

Muslim character or author - someone mentioned ramadan on April 12th, that is a great idea

Letter U - The 21st letter of the alphabet so .... May 24th starts the 24th week of 2021

Grand Egyptian museum - Since we don't know when it will open, we can go with when construction began on MArch 12th

An article popped up on my fb that recommends genres based on your Myers-Briggs personality type. I thought that could be an interesting prompt. Thoughts? Opinions?

message 1539: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2923 comments I read in order this year and while I’m glad I have done it. This year, I just want to read whatever I want and then find a spot for it. I think, you did great job with this years list though the middle was a little heavy for me. Though it had a lot to do with where I was at on the list and Covid starting. So maybe add something that will be a lighter topic in the middle.

You can google free Myers-Briggs test. I used the 16personalities one.

message 1543: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2923 comments I’d vote for the Myers-Briggs genre. It matched perfectly for me INFJ-Fantasy.

I’m not sure though if it would get enough votes since it requires members to either know their type or take a test.

Interesting idea. I got History/Biography, which I rarely read (though I have a couple books I'm interested in). That said, I'd still vote for this since it's unique and I like Myers-Briggs.

message 1546: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I can't decide whether to try reading in order again next year. I was doing OK but the timing of lockdown meant I was struggling with a prompt where I didn't have many options at that time and that just derailed me. Maybe I'll do mostly in order, so if I want to read something that fits a later prompt I'll just read it without worrying too much.

So on that note, I'd like the list prompts to be quite far apart. I like others' suggestions on tying them into related dates/events.

message 1547: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11215 comments Mod
Jillian, I plan on putting both the island prompt and the travel prompt in the middle of the list, and I think both lend themselves to lighter reads.

Ellie, I try to not have too many of the same prompts back to back, but we did have quite a few list prompts this year and it was a bit difficult to make them too spaced out. Might be easier this year since we have less lists/awards prompts.

Kristina, are you an ISTJ as well? I wouldn't mind history/biography, but I don't read many of them.

Mine is wrong also. It recommended New Age/Spirituality, which is something I never read. On the other hand I am interested in psychology (including reading about Myers-Briggs & other personality tests) and that's sort of in that vein. I am borderline with another type which comes out Satire and that is a good match for me. (I am between ENTJ and ENFJ).

This thread is about all things 2021, so not off topic.

Deck of cards can mean Ace, King, Queen, Jack, numbers 2-10, Diamond, Heart, Club, Spade. Some are interpreting it as Old Maid or tarot cards. This group lets everyone fulfill the prompts the way they want.
