I finished The Alienist by Caleb Carr. NYC in 1896 can be a grim place to live, especially with a serial killer murdering young boy prostitutes. A 'modern' investigative team is assmebled to hunt the psychopath. Good historical thriller. 4.5 stars. My complete review:

I'm currently reading Backstrom: He Who Kills the Dragon by Leif G.W. Persson and about to start Death In Disguise, the 3rd Inspector Barnaby book, by Caroline Graham. From a non-mystery perspective, I'm doing a reread of an old favourite SciFi story, Friday by Robert A. Heinlein

Still reading Victim Without a Face. In its own way, it's reminiscent of the Scandinavian TV version of The Bridge, but so far it's pretty good.
'A dark, atmospheric haunting and chilling thriller"
Sharon Bolton takes us on a dark journey of friendships lost, of pain and despair, grief and anger and missing children. Narrated by three lonely and lost characters, Catrin, Rachel and Callum, we slowly get to know them and how they see the world and so differently.
A psychological story of hate, madness and revenge, with a haunting atmospheric and chilling story, with a mixture of history in the rare setting of The Falkland Islands.
Through the book and the three narratives we learn of their tangled secrets, lies, more lies, their grief, sadness, revenge.
It is set in the Falkland Islands and there are excellent descriptions of both the scenery and the life there. The plot is quite harrowing and really heartfelt. Isolation is something that springs to mind for the whole storyline and the main characters.
So why a four star, well not as gripping as her Lacey Flint stories, a little heavy and slow at times, and a little too much time spent on the story involving the whales.
Sometimes I question whether it went a little to far near the end or not, a question that is still in my head.
But still enjoyed the story, so four stars.
I just finished Nocturnes, an incredible collection of dark tales by John Connolly. I highly recommend it. My review is here.
I finished Sacrilege by S.J. Parris. It's 1584 and Giordano Bruno -Italian ex-monk and current spy for Queen Elizabeth - goes to Canterbury. There, he hopes to expose a murderer and search for Catholic plots against the Queen. Pretty good historical mystery. 3.5 stars My complete review:

MsG wrote: "I finished Dark Corners. First time author read for me. The story stayed suspenseful. Easy read and very good."I have this on my TBR list. *:D
Currently reading First One Missing
I recently finished Dark Corners as well. @MsG: it's not her best, but it definitely is good. If you want a really good one, try her Adam and Eve and Pinch Me . Same tone, but amped up on the suspense level.
I finished The Dinner by Herman Koch. I read it because it's listed as a best book of 2013.
Two Dutch brothers and their wives have dinner at a pricey Amsterdam restaurant to discuss their teenage sons, who committed a serious crime. The book is a disturbing psychological study of characters who behave deplorably. 3 stars.

Summer House with Swimming Pool ... good book, but I couldn't stand a single person in that novel. I think Koch does that on purpose.

I just finished off The Neon Rain, the first book in James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux series. My review is here.
1. Victim Without a Face tanked for me, and prompted me to write a blog post about the prevalence of violent, sadistic thrillers in the crime fiction market these days;
2. Starting Dirty War, a crime novel by Dominique Sylvain (from France, #2 in a series) that I need for #braincandy after just finishing
3. The Sympathizer, which is billed as a spy novel but is actually a very serious book that left me with my jaw dropped to the floor.

I finished Little Black Lies by Sandra Block. Dr. Zoe Goldman, a psychiatric resident in a Buffalo hospital, is searching for information about her birth mom while treating a patient who stabbed her own mother to death.Good story with appealing characters but a not quite believable ending. 3 stars.

@ Nancy. I don't think I can read another Koch book. I wanted to jump in and throttle those characters myself.

That's funny, Barbara, because after reading Summer House with Swimming Pool, I couldn't bring myself to read The Dinner. It's still sitting unread on my shelf and I bought it when it came out.

"I love James Lee Burke. I recently read Tin Roof Blowdown which is not a Robicheaux mystery. It is however, an fictional account of
Katrina in New Orleans and the people that suffered in it. It is also a mystery, but what I found most fascinating was the depiction of the aftermath and how people struggled through.
I'm really enjoying You by Caroline Kepnes at the moment, also read bird box by Josh malerman this week it was pretty grim
I finished Missing You by Harlan Coben. NYPD Detective Kat Donavan gets involved in two cases: reinvestigating the murder of her cop father 18 years ago and looking for a missing woman who may have been 'catfished' on a dating website. Pretty good book but the plot strains credulity a little bit. 3 stars. My complete review:

I'm reading The Elric Saga Part II, the second part of the complete Saga of Elric, by Michael Moorcock.Today I started and finished Captain America: Winter Soldier, Vol. 2, a nice comics, even though I haven't read the previous volume.

A debut psychological crime novel
They told her she killed her son. She served her time. But what if they lied?
I have no memory of what happened but I was told I killed my son. And you believe what your loved ones, your doctor and the police tell you, don't you?
My name is Emma Cartwright. Three years ago I was Susan Webster, and I murdered my twelve-week-old son Dylan. I was sent to Oakdale Psychiatric Institute for my crime, and four weeks ago I was released early on parole with a new identity, address and a chance to rebuild my tattered life.
This morning, I received an envelope addressed to Susan Webster. Inside it was a photograph of a toddler called Dylan. Now I am questioning everything I believe because if I have no memory of the event, how can I truly believe he's dead?
If there was the smallest chance your son was alive, what would you do to get him back?
The book starts with a letter from convicted child killer Susan Webster to a parole board seeking understanding and release. Four years ago she was found guilty of the murder of her three month old son Dylan. The cause of death was suffocation which was blamed on Susan’s post-natal depression, although she remembers no details of the incident.
With the help of Cassie, her friend from Oakdale, and her new acquaintance Nick, a journalist, Susan sets out to discover if her son really is alive. This takes her on a journey to Durham University as she uncovers the buried secrets of her husband's past.
I found the number of characters confusing and often had to go back and reread. Similar names like Joss and Josh also jarred, and a little far fetched at the end.
But a reasonable entertaining book.
A difficult book to review and score, parts were good, other were a little over the top, other parts I became a little lost.
Three stars I think is fair
Right now I'm reading Sidney Sheldon's After the Darkness by Tilly Bagshawe. So far it has been a page-turner.
Recently finished, Wanna Get Lucky? and Edwin of the Iron Shoes. Lots of over the top action in Las Vegas in Wanna Get Lucky? and an interesting look back at the 1970's in Edwin of the Iron Shoes. Enjoyed both.
Currently reading Last Ragged Breath and I really hope to find a few minutes tonight to finally find out really whodunnit and why.

I just finished an ARC of Ruta Sepetys' next book, Salt to the Sea. While not quite as good as Between Shades of Gray, it is still an impressive work about another great catastrophe. My review is here.
I'm finishing off the year with Death In Disguise by Caroline Graham and Transfer Of Power by Vince Flynn.
I finished The Skin Collector by Jeffery Deaver. A creepy serial killer in NYC is killing people with poison tattoos. Lots of twists in this thriller. 4 stars. My complete review:

Yesterday, I finished Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, a funny and interesting book, an adventure set in the modern world, but with the tipical elements of a fantasy saga. Today I had few time, so I read Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?, a brief comics about Batman, written by Neil Gaiman.

The Blood of the Vampire, by Florence Marryat (no bloodletting or neckbiting, though)
The Restraint of Beasts, by Magnus Mills
and I'm about to finish
Dirty War: A Lola and Ingrid Investigation, by Dominique Sylvain.
