jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Welcome Yolanda! You'll find every kind of book here, and have fun doing it. We're preparing for a Toppler* now. Come check it out, and join in if you want.

*Toppler - basically a read-a-thon with a theme and tasks. This one's a week long and a team event. There is almost as much time spent gophering** and chatting as there is reading.

**Gophering - Researching and searching through piles and lists of books, plus backups, for the perfect ones to meet certain tasks.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Welcome Linda! You'll find many thing to do in this group. Right now we are voting for the February book, and starting a year long challenge with the goal of killing series.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Linda wrote: "Thanks Janice. I'll go and check it out, but I might be too busy this coming week. It certainly sounds fun, though!"

The toppler is scheduled for Feb 7-14th. We're just in the planning stages right now.

message 107: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments We have topplers every other month, and we alternate between a 24 hour toppler and a week long toppler. In February, we are doing the week long toppler. In April, we will do a 24 hour one, and so on.

We also have our group reads and monthly challenges each month that you may participate if you like. Participation isn't mandatory, but once you get started on them, you can't help yourself. LOL!

Sarah | 18550 comments Welcome Linda and Yolanda! I hope you guys find some interesting books and discussions while chatting with us here.

Pop over to the Poll. We're voting for the February read now. We pick the top two choices. If you don't want to read either, you can read and discuss a book of your choice in the theme. There will be discussion threads posted Jan 31. You can pop over to the current discussion in the folder Book Group: Book Discussions to get a feel for how it works.

Susan Guard | 695 comments Hi there everyone! I'm Susan from Texas. My daughter suggested I join Goodreads.com and I found you all while exploring. Reading has always been a big part of my life. The first thing we did when moving to a new base as a kid was get a library card. I've got pretty eclectic taste in books, I'll read just about anything.
I'm intrigued by your challenges. I get obsessed by authors and find myself searching for all their titles so the serial killer challenge looks awesome. I just need to figure out how to jump in.
Wow, this was way longer than I had planned. Oops.

message 112: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Welcome Susan! All you need to do to jump in the Serial Killer Challenge is create your own thread here. It's easier than it looks, just click in "new topic" (over the "last activity" column), chose a title for your own challenge and start planning.

Linda, here at home our kids can ask for their own library card as soon as they can write their name small enough to fit in the signature box of the card. That's around 4 or 5 years old. They love to have their own cards, and it's a great stimulus for reading!

message 113: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Welcome Linda! I see you've been filled in about our activities. It isn't listed anywhere but our favorite activity after reading is chatting :)

Hi Susan! A library card is one of the best things to have! The series challenge is a lot of fun. You can look at a couple of member's threads and get a good idea of how it works. Some are so organized that they have a good chunk of their books already planned. Others, like myself, tend to jump in and hope it works out :)

Berit | 641 comments Hi I live in sunny Southern California, where it is currently raining :-) I am a stay home mother of three kids ages 18, 17, and 12. I love to read and to work out, when I'm not busy being a mom.I am not crafty at all sadly :-) I just started joining a couple of groups here and really finding it quite interesting meeting and learning about people all around the world. I am open to any suggestion of books I like most everything, And I am trying to get out of my comfort zone a little!

message 117: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Welcome Berit! I suspect you'll feel at home in this group. :)

message 118: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Welcome Berit. It's nice of you to share your rain all the way here to northern Alberta.

Our group is definitely international. Enjoy!

message 119: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments It's trying to rain in this neck of the woods, but it's not working very well. Sounds like Southern Cali's stolen the rain :D

Welcome Berit and hope you enjoy your time with us!

message 120: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments We do need the rain, however I do not like the rain! Probably could not live anywhere but here :-)thank you for being so welcoming, I was looking through a bunch of these groups and found this one to be one of the most appealing :-)I am so excited to find all these new friends who love books as much as I do! I am so grateful for all my real live friends, but I cannot discuss a book with them and less it's been made into a TV show or movie :-)looking forward to getting involved!

Berit | 641 comments I need to add a little something :-) I have amazing friends, they just are not readers! My mom and I discussed books very often, but have very different taste. My daughter who is 17 is a reader, but does not like discussing books with mom :-)

message 123: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments You've come to the right place, then Berit. We love to discuss books.

Do you and your daughter read different types of books? I'm fortunate that my grandson and I have similar tastes. He phoned the other night and we had a great discussion about The Lord of the Rings and The Riyria Revelations.

message 124: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments My daughter reads YA, which I do read a lot of, but not exclusively. I believe she would discuss her books with my mom, but they do not read the same things :-)my mom reads a lot of mystery which is not my favorite, but I will read it.

Susan Guard | 695 comments Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Sandra and jaxnsmom I'm looking for my series ideas to join that challenge and Janice, I'm already searching for a February spelling bee book. What fun!

message 128: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Welcome Susan and Berit. You will find plenty of people here to discuss books with - the group has quite an eclectic (and very good) taste in books - I've found loads of great recommendations and discussed a variety of books at length with people. Hope you enjoy it here.

Danny (dannyx) | 48 comments Hi everyone, my name is Daniel and I'm an avid reader from Jamaica who now resides in Toronto, Canada (typing that seemed almost like an intro to an AA meeting lol). Anyways I'm in my mid-20's with a voracious appetite towards reading, regardless of genre (strong leaning to Fantasy/Science fiction/Romance). Finally decided to join a group because it allows me to combine reading with socialising and this seemed the place to start. Not to mention everyone's posts seemed to imply that this is the place to gain an unmanageable To Read List which is something to look forward to :)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Welcome Daniel! Our TBR shelves are constantly gaining weight here in YLTO!

message 131: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Lol Welcome Daniel. Maybe not AA but sometimes I wonder if we are in a similar sort of group ;)

We are definitely big on the socialising here, and look forward to you joining us. And yes, your to read pile will grow infinitely. Feel free to check out the Monthly Challenge for Feb, or sign up for our readathon (Toppler) in early Feb, and watch it grow!

Cassandra Blatchford | 26 comments Hi, my name is Cassandra and I'm from Adelaide. A friend of mine showed me a book challenge for 2015. I love reading but hadn't done very much novel reading for ages so decided to do it. Then I found GR and then this group. Just looking at posts at the moment to see how this group works. I saw you have challenges. Badges? In January I read 5 or 6 books. Most I've read in ages and it's great having a challenge because your reading different genres. Really enjoyed getting back into reading again.
