This is what I'm Reading/going to read... - 2015

Will start Sweet Hearts and continue with the last two episodes of Ulysses.
I'm reading We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates.

Starting Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption today.

I liked your review, too, and am on the same page as you (so to speak) in wanting to be able simply to read a novel, not have to read all sorts of outside sources in order to be able to understand it. I’m more willing to go to that extra effort when it comes to poetry; but in fiction, I can’t help feeling that the author is being self-indulgent and show-offy when he (or occasionally she) includes all sorts of obscure references to the classics.
You might enjoy Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which is a lot more accessible (and shorter); it’s the only Joyce novel I really liked. Or you can simply rest on your laurels!

Thanks , Abigal . Nice that someone agrees with me . I read Portrait of an Artist .... many years ago in college and I agree it is much more accessible .

Your brilliant description of your reaction to this book has encouraged me to put it on my TbR list. Thanks for the "recommendation", Lillian!

I'm trying (again!) to get through London by Edward Rutherfurd, and I'm also reading the exquisite Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimaminda Ngozi Adichie.

I've tried four times to get past the first chapter! And I too really enjoyed Paris. Unfortunately, London does not appear to have been made into an audiobook, so I'm stuck with *groan* text-to-speech.

I love this author!!
Let us know whether you like the book - I have had it on my shelf at home for a while, but I keep getting caught up in reading other books for GR discussions.

I feel the same way about "London", I tried twice, but can't get past all that stuff way, way in the beginning, a little TMI in my opinion.

"Ruska" was my first book by Rutherford and I loved it. I remember being completely immersed in it.
Would like to read "Paris" and I didn't know there was a "New York"!

I love the title - that is my goal every morning!

I really loved this book Terry. Lahiri does a good job of developing the characters. The narrative goes back and forth in time, but it is never confusing. I highly recoomend it.
