you guys can recommend books for me to add to the shelves here. I'd let you guys add books yourself, but I get some really strange books added when I do that. so, just recommend books here. xD

question, The Amaranth Enchantment seems to be a retelling to me, but I'm not sure of what. does anyone know for sure either way?

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I think it's not necessarily a retelling, I think it's just a throwback, because isn't Amaranth in a bunch of myths??

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth Have you guys read any of these?

Fairest by Gail Carson Levine
The Princess and the Hound by Mette Ivie Harrison
Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George

Also, I doubt it, but would you consider Aurelia a Fairy tale?

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I was just thinking about it, and Aurelia isn't really a Fairy tale. I think it would be more like a fairy tale if the author had used her name as something in the story. Like Aurelia means golden, or gilded. But that's not an element to the story; I think the name was used just because it was a cool one.

Naomi (catfanatic) | 85 comments Mod
I've read Fairest, but what is it a retelling of? I haven't read the other two, so what are they about? No, I don't think Aurelia is a fairy tale or a retelling. xD

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth For Fairest, I was going to say Snow White, but I really haven't read it in a long while. I would go refresh my memory, but I'm at school, and it's at home :( And Aurelia totally isn't. I just liked it, so let's pretend I never said it. LOL

lolz. I like it too. great book. xD
It's not really snow white. it's more of a 'finding your inner beauty' or something like that

message 9: by Grace (new)

Grace (miscmiscmisc) It's Snow White. who's the fairest in all the land? only it's a different kind of BEAUTY. the prince falls in love with someone not beautiful when everyone expected him to fall in love with someone beautiful. although she has her own kind of beauty that no one else sees.

message 10: by Grace (new)

Grace (miscmiscmisc) oooh, i loved Sun And Moon, Ice and Snow!!! it's great. although i haven't read the original fairytale, it's still great.

message 11: by Grace (new)

Grace (miscmiscmisc) what retold fairy tale is Keturah and Lord Death?

i'd love to read that one, but mom would throw a fit cuz of the cover. :(

message 12: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (catfanatic) | 85 comments Mod
I guess it is...
lolz. I never noticed the cover before...

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Are you looking for strictly retold fairy tales or just books with a fairy-tale fantasy feel?

message 14: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (catfanatic) | 85 comments Mod
both I guess. I never really thought about it.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I was just wondering.

Fairest is a loose retelling of "Snow White". As with Ella Enchanted, the strong fairy tale elements start emerging at the end of the novel.

Why have you added Inheritance? They're epic fantasy, not fairy-tale fantasy.

message 16: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (catfanatic) | 85 comments Mod
I'm sorry. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of retellings on that one, not fairytale retellings. crap! I did that on quite a few books. should leave them and and make the group be about retellings in general or should I just delete them?

message 17: by Grace (new)

Grace (miscmiscmisc) madison, you mean the Eragon series?

well, how many would u have to delete?

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

It's the Inheritance Cycle, properly (I wonder if that means it will just start all over after the fourth book...), but yes. :-)

I'm going to say that about a third of the books have nothing to do with fairy tales and/or are not retellings. So what about going with a more general "Fairy Tales and Retellings"?

Like, I, Coriander is not a retelling of a fairy tale, but it has a fairy-tale novel feel. Nobody's Princess is not a fairy-tale novel and it isn't exactly a retelling either, but it deals with Helen of Sparta before she was Helen of Sparta, so it kind of fits.

message 19: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (catfanatic) | 85 comments Mod
Yeah, That sounds good. now I feel bad! I didn't mean to cause this confusion!

message 20: by Grace (new)

Grace (miscmiscmisc) so naomi, have u decided yet how the groups gonna run?

message 21: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (catfanatic) | 85 comments Mod
pretty much. xD Are you guys gonna add any topics? I'm not the only one who can and I don't know really where interests lie. xD

fairest is snow white.
princess and the hound is beauty and the beast
i haven't read the others to be able to say for certain.

i loved nobody's princess and nobody's prize! di you know that the author has written another book? it's called Sphinx's Princess. it's not another in the series, but it sounds good. i just got it out of the library

message 23: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (catfanatic) | 85 comments Mod
lolz. I just got Sphinx's Princess from the library too!
Thanks. xD does anyone know what Keturah and Lord Death is?

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

It's not a retelling. It reads a lot like a folk tale, though.

message 25: by Grace (new)

Grace (miscmiscmisc) *gasp* YOU GOT SPHINX'S PRINCESS?! MY LIBRARY DOESN'T HAVE IT YET! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

i loooooooooveeee the Nobody's Princess series. it's amazing. doesn't really count as a retold fairy tale though, does it? :(

anyway, i think there's a third book to the series, rae, but i could be wrong. the loved the ending, even though it wasn't the same ending as in the greek tales.

message 26: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (catfanatic) | 85 comments Mod
they're retellings of myths.

message 27: by Rebekah Faith (last edited Oct 21, 2009 06:01PM) (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) there isn't a third, i just checked her list of that she's written. lol

and i can't wait to read Sphinx's Princess. I'm not reading it at the moment because I decided that I should probably read Distant Waves A Novel of the Titanic and Ash first since i've had them out for about a month or so. lolz. i'm on Distant Waves.

message 28: by Grace (last edited Nov 12, 2009 03:39PM) (new)

Grace (miscmiscmisc) so, naomi, is there going to be on the list of books to read here?

*slaps head* i've been doing this a lot lately. making up third/fourth/fifth books in a series and confusing everyone. sorry!!!!

the books good so far?

message 29: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) what, distant wave? yeah, im liking it a lot

message 30: by Grace (new)

Grace (miscmiscmisc) distant waves looks pretty good, i added it to my book list - is it fantasy or historical? cuz it said something about... magic/spiritualism?

Rae: what I'm wondering is if she's still writing it. it could just not be out yet.

Aria said: "so, naomi, they're going to be on the list of books to read here?"

Aria: i'm not sure what you're asking

idk. but she is in the process of writing the sequel to Sphinxes Princess ((it was so fah-reaking amazing!!!!))

message 35: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) Aria wrote: "distant waves looks pretty good, i added it to my book list - is it fantasy or historical? cuz it said something about... magic/spiritualism?"

it was. i loved it. it's historical fiction. it's based on the real-life (obviously) event of the titanic and everything, but has a bunch of fictional elements to it.

message 38: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth Hey guys, two things: I just looked at the bookshelf and Princess of the Midnight Ball isn't on there. Has anyone read that? I got really excited because Jessica Day George has a new one coming out soon, just announced: Princess of Glass, for which I'm a super super excited. Did I mention I was excited??

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

I have read Princess of the Midnight Ball. I liked it, but I didn't think it was all that great, honestly.
