LJF | 127 comments I read this book probably like 7-10 years ago...
I don't remember if it was a standalone or a series-- if it was a series, I'm pretty sure I inly ever read the first book.
On her 12th birthday, MC wishes she could be anybody else. The next day, she wakes up in someone else's body. Eventually, she does some digging and discovers that there are several girls like her-- all twelve years old-- who've swapped bodies. I don't remember if the MC ends up in several different bodies throughout the book, or if it's just the one she first swapped with, but I know there was at least one point that she was in the body of a British girl. (There was some comedy involved when she failed a speeling test and her teacher asked if she'd been studying with an American dictionary-- among other things, she misspelled "colour," I believe.)
I think there's about five or six of these bodyswapped girls; some are straight-swapped-- just two people who've switched bodies-- and others are swapped three or four ways-- a in the body of b, who's in the body of c, etc. They have some sort of chat group-- email or texting or IMing, I'm not sure. I don't remember exactly when it came out. In order to swap back, the people who've been switched have to make their wishes at the exact same time. I think there was some drama because one girl didn’t want to swap back because she didn’t want to give up her "new" iPod or something, so they made a deal that the original owner would mail it to her or something.
At some point, there's a major plot twist where an older (like fourteen or fifteen year old, I think) friend of MC and/or MC's swapped persona reveals that she used to be one of these girls who could swap bodies, but when she turned thirteen, she lost her power and ended up stuck in someone else's body-- for good. This creates some tension, because I think one of the girls in the group-- possibly one of the ones who doesn't want to swap back-- is turning thirteen soon, and they have to get everyone settled back in their own bodies before that happens.
I don't remember how it ends-- if the MC finds her way back to her original body, or if it ends with a cliffhanger for the next book in the series, or what.
Pretty sure the cover was purple, and showed a girl standing in her bedroom looking in the mirror and seeing the reflection of someone who obviously was not the same person (one was dark haired, the other a blond-- also I think one of them was wearing glasses). I also think there was a British flag somewhere in the room-- maybe printed on a bag or something?
