Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments I’m amazed I haven’t done this before but I’ve always been crap at self-promotion…

I’ve had several books published by small publishers over the years. One of those publishers describes me as the quintessential cult novelist as my readers love my work, but there aren’t many of them. (I have nearly a hundred GR ratings and averaging 4.17 at this time.)

I could start railing against the impotent marketing power of small publishers, or the complacency of book stores who don’t even realise they’ve sold out of my book so don’t bother ordering more…or I could just get on with it and try to inspire interest in my next book.

I’m mainly known as an offbeat crime novelist but I’ve also done one historical fiction story and an authorised biography. My next novel – coming soon – is a satirical crime thriller set against the backdrop of Australian refugee politics, and I have another speculative fiction novel coming out next year.

For the record, my published books are:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... The Fighting Man - historical - a story of love and revenge culminating in Hastings. (My most highly rated work.)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... Straight Jacket - crime – about a very naughty lawyer keen on life sculpture. (My most successful work)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... Mr Cleansheets - crime – about an aging Australian footballer who wanted to play in England.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... Lawrie McKinna’s Dangerous Truth – biography.

I’ll have a bit more to say about my new book (Welcome to Ord City) over the next few weeks. It’s the best thing I’ve done and I have high hopes it might help to lift me beyond cult status. I will be offering ARCs to interested reviewers at the appropriate time…but I haven’t quite worked out how to do that yet.

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments *Takes deep breath*

Okay, I've never done this before, so be gentle with me. I am offering free ebooks (epub or mobi) to the first ten people who contact me via PM. The book is The Fighting Man, a tale of love and revenge culminating with the Battle of Hastings. Currently averaging 4.5* on GR.

The Fighting Man

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments My next novel will be out in July (I hope) and I can say with some confidence that it's the best thing I've done. I will be offering ARCs at the appropriate time to people on this forum. Fingers crossed that Welcome to Ord City might prove to be a little controversial:

Sounds interesting Adrian!!

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments Thanks Brenda (and thanks for popping in to my blog).

I've been working on this a while and I know the idea is very strong. Let's hope I've done justice to it.

You will be top of the list for an ARC if you'd like one.

You're welcome Adrian :) I'm sure it'll appeal to quite a few people.. what's the page count on it?

message 9: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments Just over 400 but large format. It's 130k words, and rather a white knuckle ride (I hope).

If a book has good momentum you don't want it to stop, so the longer the better.

Thanks Adrian :)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments I always say to other authors that there is no point complaining about a bad review. Once the book is out there it becomes the property of readers to love or hate as their taste dictates.

I can handle that, but jeez I hate being misinterpreted...

I would advise you never to read a low rating review Adrian...

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments You're right Brenda, I'm breaking my own usual rule and feel a bit of an idiot.

I'll be all better tomorrow.

Never mind, I'm sure it's "normal". And I'm guessing it's the bad reviews (even if there are only one or two) that draw potential readers to pass the book up. Best to ignore for an author though and read all the good ones :)

message 15: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments It wasn't even that bad a review - said some good things. It's just that it made an observation that was somewhat bewildering. The female lead (Valla) is one of my favourite creations - such a strong character with a major story arc of her own. For me to read that the women in the story were just there for the sexual forays of the protagonist was astonishing. People are welcome to their own interpretations, but wow! It's like reading a review of Waiting for Godot where the reviewer raves about the performance of Godot!

I'm pretty sure some people don't even read books thoroughly if at all. Their goal in life is to upset authors... there are definitely some like that out there :(

message 17: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments Well, I wouldn't go that far in this case, although I do suspect that some readers bring particular lenses to a book where they look for evidence to prove a suspected prejudice.

There are a lot of readers who don't believe men can write believable female characters. I've never worried about it myself - I just make sure all named characters impact on the plot. If they do something that matters they ought to feel real enough.

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments OK, Welcome to Ord City is not far away - late July or early August - but I've seen the final cover today and it was so amazing I was inspired to write a quick blog about it: https://adriandeans.wordpress.com/202...

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments I suppose I should include the NetGalley link: https://www.netgalley.com/publisher/t...

It's proving quite popular - and a large proportion of readers are choosing it because of the cover. It is a cracking cover.

Kylie H | 1503 comments Good luck with the book Adrian I will check out the Netgalley link.

message 30: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments Thanks Kylie, if you enjoy thrillers I reckon you'll like it. I think it's fairly unique, but that's really up to the reader to decide.

message 31: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments Thanks very much to the handful of people who've expressed interest in the book.

There will be a virtual launch on Sunday afternoon through Facebook Live where I will be interviewed by Pauline Wright, President of the Law Council of Australia. Pauline's special issue this year is the rights of refugees so she's been very keen to support the book. Thank you Pauline.

All welcome.

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments OK, for those who might be interested, WTOC is a satire and certainly covers some difficult ground with some difficult people and situations. That's what satire does, and I will never sugar coat my work as a novelist daring to go where many dare not.

Here is an interview between me and the President of the Law Council of Australia who regards my book as very important for the future direction of Australia as an accepter of refugees but also as a key battle ground for the culture wars:

https://www.facebook.com/events/32361...

For some bizarre reason it's already more popular in North America than it is in Australia.

How odd.

message 33: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80194 comments Mod
I certainly hope we don't go quite in that direction Adrian!!!

I'm sure you'll gain popularity here as well :)

message 34: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments Well, I hope so Brenda...but life isn't very nice sometimes and I do try to be one of those writers who has their finger on the pulse of the deeper movements.

It can make me sound deeply pretentious.

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments What a pleasant surprise. I've been invited by a group of Old Boys from my old high school to come to one of their events and talk about my writing. I've done libraries, book clubs, all sorts of arty events, but this was really touching.

That's great Adrian - you'd have to feel very honoured.

message 37: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments Very honoured thanks Brenda. I've just been contacted by the local ABC also. They loved the book and want to interview me this Thursday morning about it.

I know it will divide people but it will hopefully get them talking also.

Adrian Deans (adriandeans) | 143 comments I'm reading a friend's book at the moment which, like my literature, tends to use sex as a prism for storytelling.

Some people find it disturbing but it's what (I believe) we most find fascinating and is an excellent lens into the human condition.

All my work tends to use that lens, not least in my latest work where I expected a range of reviews. I was right.

I decided to write a blog explaining it: https://adriandeans.wordpress.com/202...
