Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center
Things You Save in a Fire

Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's excellent at dealing with other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to uproot her life and move to Boston, it's an emergency of a kind Cassie never anticipated.

The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew, even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the handsome rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that. Because she doesn't fall in love. And because of the advice her old captain gave her: don't date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...but will she jeopardize her place in a career where she's worked so hard to be taken seriously?

I'm not much of a romance reader, but I really enjoyed this one. It was easy to read and engaging. I liked the characters and it seemed pretty realistic. I am going to read her next book, What You Wish For soon.

Jayme I read this earlier in the year and I really liked it. I'm always a little hesitant of books labeled "romance' because I think the writing suffers because authors think they just have to make the story cute and lovey (strictly my opinion). This book was believable, I really cared about the characters and I didn't feel like I was reading a 'romance." This would be a good/smart beach read. I gave it 4 stars.

I didn't realize she had another book coming out. Thanks for the heads up!

You're welcome!

I feel the same way you do about "romance" books. I also think sometimes the authors focus too much on "hot and sexy" and the story suffers then as well. I don't mind erotica occasionally, as long as the story has something else to offer. I'm also not generally a fan of insta-love or people who just can't seem to control themselves at all. I really liked that this was just a good story. I agree that it should be a great beach read.

Savanes | 2107 comments I want to read this one and I totally agree about both of your comments @Jayme and @Kristie.

Caroline Hamblin (hamblingirl19) | 6 comments I actually loved this book. I was super surprised. I’m not a romance reader either. I agree that it was more realistic than most. I’ve always hated the “hot and sexy” romance. I liked how this started out with her hating love then she finds it unexpectedly.

Savanes | 2107 comments I started this last night and really enjoyed the writing style (1st chapter). I'm excited...

Sapna Reinant (bibliophilesapna) | 6 comments It is such a nice change to find a book that focuses on the building of a relationship. Unlike most 'romance' books, the basis for the relationship isn't uncontrollable, undeniable sex; which gets annoying and unrelatable after a few pages.

I really think sex-based "romance" should be shelved as erotica.

Especially as those books tend to go into so many details... hum hum ;)

Dana | 51 comments I feel like this was a book that really helped my COVID induced reading slump. I flew through it, and though I don't typically reach for "romance" books, this was a great read!

Gunit Kaur Kalada | 160 comments Romance novels is kinda a new genre that I've recently started exploring, and I am glad this book has been part of that exploration. The book has so much to offer, not only terms of romance but also courage, loss, forgiveness and so on. I really liked it.

Savanes | 2107 comments I'm about a third through and I'm really enjoying it too. It's not the regular romance novel. It's refreshing.

I'm so glad that so many people who don't normally read romance tried this book and enjoyed it.

Dana - I had a similar reading slump. I'm not 100% out of it yet, but I'm doing better. Lethal Bayou Beauty helped for me. It was light and made me laugh out loud. It was just what I needed.

I'm at chapter 15 and even though I'm the paranoid type (solely when reading ;)), I didn't think about this one Lynn but you might be right.
I want to read your other spoiler but I'll wait.

Finished - LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!

The only criticism I have, (view spoiler). It didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book though.

Regarding my earlier spoiler, (view spoiler)

I'm so glad you loved it! I did too. :) There were a couple of little things that I thought were too convenient or neat, but not enough for me to really be bothered by it. I can't wait to read her next book.

Geoff McCausland | 33 comments I finally finished this book and I'm glad I did (I only had the audible edition, and with working from home and the gyms being shut down I haven't been able to listen very much). I really enjoyed the development of the story and the relationships. I agree with some parts being too convenient. Adding her next book to my want to read shelf.

Savanes | 2107 comments I finished too and I looooooved it. It would have been a 5 stars for me were it not for (view spoiler) Other than that I really enjoyed this book and I will read other books from this author.
PS: re your spoiler Lynn, I was glad and sad too!

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments Wow!
Ok, wasn't planning on this one, but am adding it now. I am going to check out the library website right now!

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments I finished this one and totally loved it too. This book wasn't even on my radar until I was reading your comments!
I am so glad I read it. It was the right amount of romance, family dynamics and humor.
This one had me cracking up so many times!
I agree with (view spoiler)

So glad you loved it too, Vicki! Seems that it went over well with our group. I also agree with your spoiler.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I thought the cover was very striking, and I liked the story too. I will be reading more by Katherine Center for sure.
