Science Fiction - Book with aliens that speak in a strange language in text, lots of {this[and]that} type of formatting

Hello - this is my first post. Hopefully this is description rings a bell for someone. =)

I read this book in 2012 or 2013, it may have been published as early as 2011 though. My puppy destroyed the book so I never was able to finish reading it and I must have thrown it out rather than write down what it is.

What I remember from the plot is that there are aliens who speak with an odd syntax, where they use lots of different punctuation marks. It is more of a far future book with alien empires and there is a war. The aliens kill people even when they don't need to and there was the implication that the aliens did this because they had a different experience with death or maybe just had that belief.

It wasn't the greatest book, but it's one of those things that I keep coming back to and wondering about the plot!

It was for adults - it may be young adult fiction though.
