I read this about 4/5 years ago maybe . I think the stepfather was physically abusing the mother but never left a mark on the child only mentally/verbally abused him. It’s described when the police go and rescue the child and then it skips a few years to when he’s a bit older and with a family and how he gets along with them. This is until he turns to alcohol and later drugs and becomes homeless when he runs away. The family look for him but he doesn’t want to be found, eventually he goes to hospital I think and they find him there. Can’t remember how it ends
