Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I'll give it a try. I'll even add Nyssa's suggestions to my list (except the Mobile Read).

Don't know how well I'll do, but can be interesting to track.

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I set up my list as well. :D

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Zombies!

Nyssa | 2023 comments I added the other suggestions to the list..
If, going forward, anyone would rather I not add their "specialty" categories to the suggestions list, or if you would like me to add a shoutout when adding your category, please just let me know. :)

Oooh, I like that people like my additions! I've decided that I'm also going to add Religion and Secular to my genres, if you want to throw them under the specialty list too, Nyssa. :)

Will do! :)

Who do I credit for:

Historical Nonfiction
Science Nonfiction
War

message 10: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Me... all me. LOL

message 11: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL I love that I have my own suggestion category. THE POWER! :D

message 12: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Becky wrote: "Me... all me. LOL"

Ah! Excellent. Take a look at the list now. :)

I added "War" and "Zombies" to mine, but, I'm not even going to try to increase my Nonfiction reading, at least not in 2015.

message 13: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I've been into nonfiction lately. It's a nice change, sometimes, and makes me feel smarter!

message 14: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Nicki wrote: "Oh! I remember wanting to do this a couple of years back, and I got totally sidetracked. I'm in. :D I need to find the tweaked list I did back then, and re-tweak it."

Yay! Or you can just look at what we're staring with and tweak from there.

message 15: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Nicki wrote: "Right, found it. I've ended up with a hybrid of the list I had there and the list y'all have here. I aim to focus on fiction rather than non-fiction, and only prose, so that's accounted for most of..."

And now my category list is ridiculously long!! LOL

However, I won't stop until I hit 50 to 52 categories, which would equate to one book per week.

message 16: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Ooooh LGBT. Adding that one to my list.

message 17: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Nicki wrote: "That's a good goal! Since I'm particular about reading series straight through I'd best not add too many more, but my anal retentiveness is pushing me to incorporate one more to make it a nice even..."

Zombies Vs. Unicorns vs The Name of the Wind.. I say add both! :D

message 18: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I have 45 categories. :D

message 19: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah... I actually have tentative plans for quite a lot of them as well. But I'm not going to list anything, because as we all very well know, my reading lists tend to turn into reading slumps.

So. I shall refrain.

message 20: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Yah, no planned reading lists for me either.

Here, however, is how I'm handling this particular challenge:

Primary Goal - One "Anything Once" Category a Month: [00 / 12]
Secondary Goal- Additional "Anything Once" Categories Each Month: [00]
Bonus Goal - All "Anything Once" Categories: [00 out of 48]

And this is my plan for the year...

Main Goals: Have a Much Better Year Than 2014!
Increase & Improve level of participation in Flights of Fantasy!
(I will not be participating in Buddy Reads or Mini-Challenge Reads this year)

Flights of Fantasy Book Club Reads:
Primary - One Book Club Selection from Each Month: [00 / 12]
Secondary - Additional Book Club Selections from Each Month: [00 out of 32]
Bonus - Unread Book Club Selections from 2014: [00 out of 44]

Flights of Fantasy Series Challenge Reads :
Primary - One Series Book Every Month: [00 / 12]
Secondary - Additional Series Books Every Month: [00]
Bonus - Complete a Minimum of 3 Series by the End of the Year: [00 / 03]

The "I'll Try Anything Once" Challenge:
Primary - One "Anything Once" Book Every Month: [00 / 12]
Secondary - Additional "Anything Once" Books Every Month: [00]
Bonus - Complete the "Anything Once" list by the End of the Year: [00 / 48]

LOL! I didn't create it, I found that somewhere years ago and thought it would be fun. But I'm horrible at book lists. I suck at them.

message 30: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) But this isn't a book list, it's a book GENRE list. You can read any books you like. :D

Nyssa | 2023 comments Added "Survival" to my list and am now looking for one more, fiction related category, to make it an even 50 total.

message 35: by Nyssa (last edited Dec 30, 2014 10:32PM) (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Nicki wrote: "Perhaps one for fiction read in translation?"

As in originally written in a foreign (to me) language and then translated to English?

Thats a good idea! What would we call it? ... "Translated Work", "Formerly Foreign"...

I also just realized that I never added Speculative Fiction!! (Duh) It is technically a "Free for All" in this particular group, but hey.

In fact, someone could also have a "Free for All", especially if they know they like to read a particular genre! That would basically give them a free slot to indulge a little. "Free for All" can also allow for that undefinable selection.

So I'm now jumping from 49 to 52, which is my personal cap!

Thanks Nicki! :)

lol I say pick your favorites first, then add say 5 to 10 "new to you" categories and voila you have a challenge! :D

Happy New Year from Florida, USA!

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 119 comments I might change some stuff, but using other's lists is a bonus because it gets me out of my box.

What is Magical Realism? Common example?

Among Others by Jo Walton Among Others is a great example. Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore is supposed to be a great example as well (that one is on my TBR).

Here are some suggestions (and a definition) from GR: Magical Realism

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 119 comments Thanks. Yes, I highly recommend Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. I stayed up all night reading that one. And thanks for the link. I have Discovery of Witches in my Audible account waiting to be listened to and that will qualify.

message 47: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Hmm, can one book count for multiple entries?

Like can a Western Romance count for western and romance? Or can a book like The Girl with All the Gifts count for sci-fi, zombie, and YA?

message 48: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I would say definitely. Though I'd only use the book for one of the cats. Unless you read it multiple times.

Its technically not supposed to; you're supposed to choose one category per book. However, since these are personal challenges feel free to tweak it anyway you see fit.
I would just ask that everyone add a description of their personal tweaks in their threads. Thank you! :)
