Hey everyone!

While most of us have been stuck at home for a while now, we thought this would be the perfect time for a mini Read-A-Thon! This won't be as extensive as our normal ones, and we won't be putting anyone into groups.

On Sunday, the mods will post five sets of bookshelf tags, each in its own thread. As an ATY group, we will work to complete all five sets of tags using books we've read over the course of the week.

The challenge will start when you wake up on Monday, April 20 and end when you go to sleep on Sunday, April 26.

To find the bookshelf tags:

Go to the book's main page. On the right side, you will see a list of genres that this book has been attributed to. Click "See Top Shelves..." to see all of the bookshelves that this book has been tagged on.

Alternatively, you can go to www.goodreads.com/shelf to see all of the shelves and search for books that may fit a particular bookshelf.

How It Will Work:

You read, we post:
Just post the books you read in their respective threads. Make sure you leave a note about which book you read, which tag it applies to, and a bit about the book! The mods will track which tags have been covered already.

Anyone can contribute:
There's no sign ups for this one! If you finish a book, pop on over, claim a bookshelf tag, and tell us about the book. You can chat about books or see what other people are reading in the tag threads or in the Individual Tracking thread.

First come, first served on the tags:
There will be no "holds" placed on the tags -- since we are a big group, we will check off tags as we finish books. Luckily the tags will be grouped on theme, so books are likely to have multiple tags from the same thread.

The goal is to READ! (And have fun while doing it):
This is a no-pressure Read-A-Thon. Contribute books or pages, and watch our stats add up.

Side Challenges:
(Threads to be posted before Monday!)

- Track your individual reading on our Individual Tracking thread and finish up April with a big push.
- Send us your pages read on the Miles of Pages thread to see how far our reading will take us this week.
- Join in on our Monthly Discussion thread and tell us what you plan on reading.

If you have any questions, post them below!

FAQs

Q: Do the page count rules apply for this Read-A-Thon?
A: Yep! Books should have at least 100 pages (or the equivalent audio hours) left at the start of the Read-A-Thon in order for it to count. Books should also be at least 125 pages long.

Q: Is there a minimum amount of tags the book must have to fit in the challenge?
A: Not really. Use your best judgement -- obviously if it's only been tagged once, and that tag is you, it probably shouldn't count. We'd recommend sticking to the first 3-5 pages of tags for a book, but for books with many pages of shelves, you can go deeper than that on the list.

Q: How do I translate audio hours to pages read?
A: The general consensus is 1 page per minute of audio.

Suzanne | 349 comments Thank you for doing this. I’ve had a very hard time focusing on reading, or really on anything, lately. I need structure and routine and this will really help me out!

message 12: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments Is there any chance we can get a central list of the tags? That’ll make it easier to know what tags exist instead of having to visit the different threads since all of them don’t necessarily tie into the genre of the thread like the dates and such.

I'll post a "Tags in Progress" thread once we get started! Good idea!

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Is there a minimum number of times the book was tagged for it to count? i.e. The book I've just read was tagged historical fiction 991 times but western only 29.

No, I would just say more than once lol. Maybe on the first 3-5 pages of tags for the book? If it's on the first 3-5 pages, it probably has more than one or two tags for the shelf. But I'm also not checking all these books, so if it falls to the sixth or seventh page, I won't count it against you lol.

When we have done this previously, I don't think there were any rules about where the tag was found or how many people tagged it, so let's just assume that if you assign a book to a tag, it fits well enough to count.

Ok, I have a dumb question. I have never cared what tag someone puts on a book. I never put any except "read", "to read" or the name of a challenge. Where do I find what tags people have put on a book?

Are tags the same as Shelves? I think that is what you are referring to. Personally I've never paid any attention to what other people call a book. I only use them myself for practical purposes, like To Read, Read, or the name of a challenge.

I'm in the same boat. I went to a book's page and did "ctrl+F" for "tags" and nothing came up. But when I clicked on see more shelves, it seemed to match up with what people are describing for this challenge.

message 20: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3319 comments That's what I'm going with - the Shelves to the right of the book cover. If you click "See Top Shelves" you'll get many tags that readers have used.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3268 comments What would the equivalent audio hours be to reach 100 pages? I had about 2 hours left of Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come: An Introvert's Year of Living Dangerously, which I finished off today, but I have no idea how many pages that would be.

I would say 1 page = 1 minute. I’m not sure if we’ve had a rule in the past. So an hour and 40 minutes remaining.

1 page 1 minute is a good rule of thumb, but you can also just guess.

Sorry, Robin and Steve. Yes, tags = shelves. I probably should have used the proper language when setting up this entire event 😂 I've seen them referenced a lot of places as "bookshelf tags" and I guess my brain just shortened it. Sorry about the confusion!

Thanks! Sorry for the duplicate questions above. I submitted one and it didn't show up so I ended up sending another. Anyway, I've got it now.

message 29: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) On the chance that the lists of tags gets filled up quickly, will there be more posted or once these are filled, are we are done? Generally during readathons I read a book a day but I don't want to take up 7 tags myself if that makes it difficult for anyone else to fill a tag.

We will definitely keep producing tags if everyone reads the ones we have! I thought this would be enough because it's a shorter time frame than our normal Read-A-Thons, but WHOOP. Everyone is reading and I love it!
