It's just bonus points! You don't have to do it to finish the quest. I've found that older books from the 80's fall into these categories a lot since most people don't go back that far to rate books.
Steven wrote: "OH YEAH... you could read books 1-6 of the same series to get level six from level 5.hmmmm.... I might have to do that >.< I have so many series on my to-read list!"
I was guessing that the top people might top out at around 11 or 12 just based on how long my pyramid has been going.

Speaking of that, is there maximum level you can obtain? For hero you got to 11. What about sword and magic?
❀Tea❀ wrote: "Speaking of that, is there maximum level you can obtain? For hero you got to 11. What about sword and magic? "No max level. If anyone makes it to hero 11 I can generate more levels. The higher levels are generated by adding the previous two levels together.
Level 9 - 360
Level 10 - 585
Level 11 - 945
i.e. Level 11 (945) = Level 9 (360) + Level 10 (585)
So, Level 12 would be 1,530 if we get any really dedicated people :)
Weapons can also go as high as you can though it would start getting equally hard for people.
Kelly wrote: "Shanna_redwind wrote: "Thanks Steven. One more question: When fighting common monsters is it one kill a week or one kill per type per week?"
One kill per type per week. Each one's on it's own t..."
It's my understanding that once you kill the rat, the goblin and bat go into hiding for a week, and are therefore not available for battle until the week passes, unless you bribe them each with a book. can you keep bribing the rat with books?
The way you're stating it, it looks like you can kill one of each of the common monsters in a week.
Hmmm. People ask such good questions. Yes the traditional answer is you can kill each one once a week.I'm trying to figure out if infinite bribes can get abused. Anyone else see a way to abuse it? I think quests on average give more than 1xp per book.
Another healing question... Can you repeat the words you use for the Spell-it-Out part of the challenge? For instance, can I use the word CURE and spell it out 2 or 3 times, using different books to get the healing points?
I don't have a lot of books on my TBR with healing words in the title and so I will probably use the Spell it Out option more often to heal.
Kelly wrote: "Hmmm. People ask such good questions. Yes the traditional answer is you can kill each one once a week.I'm trying to figure out if infinite bribes can get abused. Anyone else see a way to abuse it..."
You still.have to read the book.
Margaret:Except for the first 3 healing books which are limited to only those 3, (and yield healing potions) it's my understanding that you spell out for example :
S
E
R
U
M
using books whose author, title etc match the first letter of each book and you get Healing Points. I don't believe that you need healing words in the titles of these books-- just the first 3.
For Kelly:
Re:accumulation of healing points
I'm currently at 14. As I read books to spell out
C +1 hp
U. +1 hp
R. +1 hp
E. +1 hp
Can I accumulate these healing points before combat? Or must I wait til after combat to bring my HP'S up?

Ok. I'll give infinite bribes. I just need to make sure that quests give more exp/rewards on average since they're harder to get the conditions met for.

You could do the healing words before doing the quest as well.
The healing words is more of a downtime healing. "You may sit down and enjoy a light read to rest and rejuvenate."
You can spell it out using books with any title. You get the hp gains right away but have to spell the whole word before starting a new one. Also you can't do this in combat since it's downtime healing and it can only be used up to your max HP for your level.
Thanks for replying Reva and Kelly, but I don't think I explained my question properly.I want to be able to repeat the healing word I use. For instance, if I use CURE and get the 4 healing points from reading all the letters in the word, can I read that word again, but using different books to match the letters? Does this make sense?
Margaret wrote: "Thanks for replying Reva and Kelly, but I don't think I explained my question properly.I want to be able to repeat the healing word I use. For instance, if I use CURE and get the 4 healing point..."
Can't see why that's a problem but I guess Kelly is the last authority on this. You could also use CURARE (a drug used in surgery).
The beauty of goodreads is that you can search for books that fit any word and order them from the library if you don't have them at home.
Margaret wrote: "Thanks for replying Reva and Kelly, but I don't think I explained my question properly.I want to be able to repeat the healing word I use. For instance, if I use CURE and get the 4 healing point..."
Yup. You can repeat the word until you get bored of it :)
Kelly, could you explain to me how the Minor healing potion works, please?"Minor Heal Potion - Allows healing up to 5 health during a battle."
Does it mean that after using it your health is restored to 5 HP (i.e. you can use it only if your health is currently bellow 5 HP)? Or does it mean that it adds 5 HP to your current health (up to the maximum of your health per your EXP level)?
Kelly wrote: "Yup. You can repeat the word until you get bored of it :)"Great - thanks Kelly. I really don't want to add any more books to my ever expanding TBR - it's a new years resolution for me to read more books than I add to my to-read shelf :)

Goodreads can be a blessing at times, but it can also be a devil of a thing; I now read so much more than I used to, and I keep finding more and more books that I want to read!! There will probably be quests later that are tailored more towards cleaning up your list and others that are tailored towards finding new books. I'm guessing no one will be able to complete all the quests so you can pick the ones that appeal to you and your goals.

I'm having little problem with the math :P If my hero is on level 3, how many hp (s)he has?And since I battled few monsters, my hp was 3 before leveling up. Does that has any significance?
I promise, I'll catch up by the end of the quest! :P
Oh, and should I put collected berries into my bag? I can have only one berries quest, right?
10 Starting + 2 for level 2 + 2 for level 3 = 14 max HP at level 3.Your hp are back to full after you level :) So always good to wear them down right before you get your level.
The berries you have to turn over to the lady making the pie. You can only collect berries for the pie once (i.e. one word). But you get your +2 exp for completing the word.
Bone and Berries from the quest are given up to the quest asker in exchange for your experience/rewards. Bones you get from killing things go into your inventory. They'll be uses for those later.I tried to put what you have to do and what you get in italics in the quest description. The first part is the lore/setup of the quest.
So for timewalker you get a reward of an item so that goes into your inventory. But for just collection quests you can just hand the berries/bones over right away so no need to store them.
What if I don't want to give them away now and want to store them for later in case something better comes along? ☺
You can keep any number of books in your "bag" until you are ready to use them. For example, I'll keep a 600+ page book until I need it for a level 6 sword. Or books of 100+ to use as sacrifices so that my hero can battle more than 1 common monster in a week.
❀Tea❀ wrote: "What if I don't want to give them away now and want to store them for later in case something better comes along? ☺"You can keep them pre-berry :)
I think people aren't scoring experience points properly and are carrying higher HP than their level allows. It's also my understanding that in order to attack a second or third common monster in the same week, a book needs to be sacrificed for each additional attack. I don't think that this is being done. So am I doing it incorrectly ?

I haven't been checking people's individual posts. Maybe we can figure out a way to explain things better if there's mistakes being made. It is rather complex.
Maybe I can add an example for the HP. i.e.
Level 1: Max hp 10
Level 2: Max hp 12
Level 3: Max hp 14
If you want to attack the same common monster in the same week you must sacrifice a book. But you could attack both a goblin and sewer rat in the same week without sacrificing a book. They're each on their own week timer as well.

I think some might be counting exp pt for hp or the reverse. Some might be counting exp pt for books read to level up sword or staff.
Thanks for clarifying the attacks.

Reva, how are you killing the goblin in one hit if it's got 10hp and you have an attack of 6? Are you using some potion or something? I thought I had this figured out but now I'm confused.
I guess that I'm not killing the goblin grrrr. Without consequence. Read it wrong cause I was able to level up after the first attack. Many thanks for correcting the mistake. Still learning this game.

Welcome Karrie :) There's lots of people here that can answer any questions you end up having. We're learning together.
*waves to Kelly*Me again :)
*grins*
Ok, I'm trying to figure out uncommon monsters...
When you say they stick together that means I'm fighting all of them at the same time? Or just that I don't have to wait sometime before another attacks?
And if I have to fight them all at the same time, can I call time-out during battle (lets say after mortally wounding one) and go lick my wounds before tackling next? Can they also recuperate (that one actually goes for all monsters)?
Oh, and if they do attack at the same time, can I ask one of my fellow heroes here to help me out? I'm still waiting for my sidekick to show up :P
No, the common monsters flee when one is killed but the uncommon ones "stick together" (i.e. don't flee) so you could kill two in a row. There's no wait timer on them, just an overall limit. You just fight one at a time and when it's dead it decreases the count of those animals. They go extinct when you get the last one.
So you're saying if I challenge one and kill it and then go lick my wounds, other will raise havoc in my kingdom?! I definitely need sidekick :P*looks innocently at Kelly*
Thanks. ☺
Those monster will have to wait little longer. Even common ones get me to infirmary too often (and no it doesn't have anything to do with that cute doctor working there! I'm seriously wounded after every battle. I broke my nail during last one!) :P

Just a few suggestions:
Concentrate on leveling your sword and staff up. You can kill rats with one stroke and no cost to your health.
Next get your hero's level up to increase maximum health. Plan a larger attck before you level up so that big damage is wiped out when you level back up to optimum health.
Read to accumulate minor health potions which you will need for larger attacks.
Read a bunch of low page count books (100 to 200 pages) to use as sacrifices for repeat attacks.
I was just wondering if one of you'd like to look at my quest to see if I'm doing it right. My quest is here: Message 40
