Joanna We are now taking nominations for our May 2020 group read! This thread will be open until 4/20, when we will take the nominations to the polls. Eligible books should be written in the New England states prior to 1920. Please use the "add book/author" link when making your nominations. Have fun! :)

Joanna Decisions decisions! :D I am torn between so many I'm excited to read, yet knowing I can't read them all at once! I will go ahead and nominate Mosses from an Old Manse by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Hi Meg,
Me too. I considering Louisa May Alcott
then Washington Irving came to mind.
I may as well stand in front of a confectionary window.
I will decide today. 💝🍬🍭

Joanna Hi Ruth! Washington Irving was from NY so he wouldn't really qualify as a New England author. He is well worth reading though...I just finished Abbotsford and Newstead Abbey this morning which was excellent!
I'm looking forward to seeing what you choose! :)

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Of course, I had forgotten that detail. Problem solved!

Joanna Frustrating, I know! And then there's James Fenimore Cooper...I would love to read some of his books as a group but he's not from New England either. Maybe I should set up a buddy read thread within this group for early AMERICAN authors! ;)

message 7: by Marian (new)

Marian (classicsconsidered) I feel like I shouldn't nominate until I've caught up with this month's reading :) however, I'd probably renominate Billy Budd!

message 8: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Marian do feel free to nominate if you feel you will be able to participate in next month's read. Billy Budd, Sailor is another one I'm really looking forward to. :)

That has the makings of many good reads.
We could always wait until we have covered most N.E.
authors.

Joanna That's true...I have a tendency to want to do everything at once! Lol

Joanna Ahh yes, another obscure NE author!! I have a couple of her other books on my to-read list but hadn't seen this one before!

Hi Meg,
I was considering Louisa May Alcott, but thought to go the
obscure route.

It's just my personal preference but I'll be happy with whatever is chosen.

Same here...they all sound so good I'm not sure how I'm going to vote, even with one of them being my own nomination! :D

Emma | meadowroselibrary Okay thanks Meg!
I'm going to vote for Walden by Henry David Thoreau.

Oooh ANOTHER good one! I used to read parts of this over and over, but now it's been a few years and I'm eager to pick it up again. :)

Emma | meadowroselibrary My dad and best friend love his books, so one of these days I'd really like to try it! :)

message 28: by Marian (new)

Marian (classicsconsidered) I've never read Walden or The Scarlet Letter (shocking right?!!), a group read might be the motivation I need :D

Emma | meadowroselibrary The Scarlet Letter would be fun to read too! :)

message 30: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 86 comments I hope we all live long enough to read all these great books! I don't have further suggestions, but I am anticipating the next line-up!

~Oliver Wendell Holmes
