This book is probably at least 20 years old. A teenage boy is transported to what he thinks is the distant past via a red cyclone, but it turns out it is actually the distant future. He figures this out when he discovers the remains of a Pyrex measuring cup. The antagonist is someone from his time transported to the future in a similar fashion. (view spoiler)[The boy lives an entire lifetime in the future and is taken back to the past and his teenage body, spends his life researching a cure for the disease that caused the dystopian future (hide spoiler)]

A guess - The Transall Saga by Gary Paulsen? Although the boy is transported by a blue light beam, I mention this book because a search using Amazon's preview turned up this phrase: "One woman had a perfect half of a white glass bowl with PYREX imprinted on the bottom..."
