Read around 2017-2019. A fairly new book I believe. In the plot, the main character is taken to a magic "school." In the book's universe, only kids with birthday's around a specific date can perform magic well. The main character was born far from that date, and seemingly is there (the magic school) by accident. The kids must master spells in order to learn more (They learn magic from an ancient book, which pages are blank until they have mastered the previous), and I can remember two categories, healing and destruction. They are learning to eventually fight off monsters, emerging out from places all over the world.
