SOLVED. Finding a book about the jazz era. [s]

I remember reading this book as a kid maybe 8-10 years ago, I’m 23 now. So I was very young but it was basically about a poor African American kid, who grow up during the jazz era. During the plot he either rides a cargo train or just hitchhikes around. I remember cab calloway being mentioned in the plot, maybe the character meets him? There’s a scene where he’s in a Restaurant eating clam chowder or such. It’s extremely faded from my memory I just remember I loved reading it.
