Damn, the only other ones I'm finding with girls and uncles are picture books.How old was the girl? Teenager or younger child?
Do you remember if the uncle had full-blown AIDS and died, or if the girl just learned he was HIV-positive?
I actually think I've found it. "I Never Got to Say Good-bye" by Alida E. Young. The name of the uncle-- Mark-- came back to me, and a Google search let me to it.
I did a text search for 'uncle' in this book on Open Library. The only one with a female protagonist I could find in that publication range was I Never Got to Say Good-Bye by Alida Young. Even if that's not it, I figured it was still an interesting resource to share.
Oh yeah, that's got to be it! "Mark, who is more like a brother than an uncle to Traci, contracted HIV from a blood transfusion he received after a horrible automobile accident that killed his parents."
