Gio Listmaker (giohumanistlistmaker) Bertie escapes again. LOl

I agree these are fun to read. The audible is good but you miss some of the insults.

Which story are you reading at the moment? I read until Comrade Bingo, which I love on the show, so yay ^^

Gio Listmaker (giohumanistlistmaker) Starting Chapter 9 A Letter Of Introduction. Thank you again for this BR.

It is going to be hard to choose a favorite.

Gio Listmaker (giohumanistlistmaker) Jeeves reaction to Bingo in Comrade Bingo. Priceless. ROFL!!

Right? It's even better on the show, because they tell the comrades that they share a flat and take turns doing chores because Bertie is just incapable of boiling water 🤣

From chapter 14 🤣🤣🤣

(view spoiler)

And also, one of my favorite Jeeves moments on the show because Stephen Fry's delivery is just perfection:

"I happened to pursue him one morning with the intention of fetching him a clip on the side of his head-" "Great Scot, Jeeves! You?" "Yes, sir. The boy is of an outspoken disposition, and had made an opprobrious remark respecting my personal appearance." "What did he say about your appearance?" "I have forgotten it, sir," said Jeeves with a touch of austerity. "But it was opprobrious."

I'm so so SO sorry, but I finished this one… It was just so much fun!!!!
I think my favorite story was the one with the Glossops. Or Comrade Bingo. OR The purity of the turf. Or… All of them? :D:D:D

Just a general question, do you have all the books already? Because the next one, Carry On, Jeeves, has some of the stories from the first book in it, I just noticed… The stories in #3 are:

Jeeves takes charge
The artistic career of Corky
Jeeves and the unbidden guest
Jeeves and the hard-boiled egg
The aunt and the sluggard
The rummy affair of old Biffy
Without the option
Fixing it for Freddie
Clustering round young Bingo
Bertie changes his mind

I wouldn't mind reading it again because it's never a waste of time to read some of that magic, so it's up to you :)

Finishing today.

I agree, Comrade Bingo is a favorite. But they all have something to love😊

Wouldn't mind getting the whole collection. Repeats are fine. Let's keep going in order.

message 63: by Gio (new)

Gio Listmaker (giohumanistlistmaker) I am having a hard time finding Carry on Jeeves in a kindle version.

Might have to skip or try to find each story on its own.

Good news is we have read most of them.😀

I cannot find any of the stories we haven't read. They are not in Kindle version or are buried in a collection somewhere.

Let's skip to #4 as I can get that one.

Jeeves and the impending doom
The inferiority complex of old Sippy
Jeeves and the Yule-Tide spirit
Jeeves and the song of songs
Episode of the dog McIntosh
The spot of art
Jeeves and the kid Clementina
The love that purifies
Jeeves and the old school chum
Indian summer of an uncle
The ordeal of young Tuppy

Finished the first 2 stories. I love it when Bertie has ideas on how to help people. It's always cute to see his brain at work. Poor thing :D But my favorite plot of his is still pushing the Glossop kid off a bridge. That is just priceless.

I also adore the way Jeeves always gets his way. Whether it's monogrammed handkerchiefs, garish colored clothing, a hat he deems inappropriate, a mustache, or a vase. Somehow they all disappear :D I'd feel sorry for Bertie, but I can't :D

Aunt Dahlia finally arrives in chapter 4!!!!

"The modern young man," said aunt Dahlia, "is a congenital idiot and wants a nurse to lead him by the hand and some strong attendant to kick him regularly at intervals of a quarter of an hour."

I love her :D

She's my favorite Aunt :D How far did you get so far? I just started chapter 8. The love that purifies. Strangely, I do not remember it from the title. That's a first :D

message 75: by Gio (new)

Gio Listmaker (giohumanistlistmaker) In the middle of chapter 7.

Bertie's girl troubles are almost as funny as Jeeves controlling his wardrobe.

What I've always worried (it's word for word on the show, so ^^):

"One must remember, however, that it is not unusual to find gentlemen of a certain age yielding to what might be described as a sentimental urge … The phenomenon is particularly noticeable, I am given to understand, in the United States of America among the wealthier inhabitants of the city of Pittsburgh. It is notorious, I am told, that sooner or later, unless restrained, they always endeavor to marry chorus-girls."

Why Pittsburgh? Were they really notorious for that? :D

message 79: by Gio (new)

Gio Listmaker (giohumanistlistmaker) Lol. Not sure about Pittsburgh. I love all the stereotypes. Tho...

I Finished. My favorite "Jeeves and the Song of Songs.

"I don’t know why, but somehow I had got it into my head that the first thing thrown at Tuppy would be a potato. One gets these fancies. It was, however, as a matter of fact, a banana, and I saw in an instant that the choice had been made by wiser heads than mine. These blokes who have grown up from childhood in the knowledge of how to treat a dramatic entertainment that doesn’t please them are aware by a sort of instinct just what to do for the best, and the moment I saw that banana splash on Tuppy’s shirt-front I realized how infinitely more effective and artistic it was than any potato could have been."

message 83: by Gio (new)

Yes, the writing style is very choppy, and a lot of weird sayings (not unlike Georgette Heyer).
But what really confuses me are the abbreviations. Like instead of saying "Music in my ears" he says "Music in my e." - at least once every couple of pages. Is that normal? And why?

Yes, the writing takes some getting used to. After a while, it's part of the fun, but you need to get to that point first :D You'll get into it after a while.

As to why. Uhm. Personal style? I have no idea if it was just a quirk of his, or represents the slang of the time.

Me Too. No Worries. Chuffy with all of his property. Yet poor...=))

I am sad about Jeeves.

This parting of the ways with Jeeves had me feel a bit as if I had just stepped on a bomb and was trying to piece my self together again in a bleak world, but we Woosters can keep the stiff upper lip."

No worries. Just let me know when you feel up to picking this one up again.

I'll admit this one is not the best. It kind of fizzled out towards the end for me, too. I like the episode much more. The beginning was hilarious, but there was a point where it was just all a bit too much.
