message 201: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lrclark83) I'm Lisa. Mainer living in NY state. I teach in the Bronx. I mainly read for fun. I completed the 2015 Popsugar Challenge and this year I am aiming to complete the 2016 Popsugar Challenge. In addition,I am going to check off the boxes on Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge that appeal to me. I like the challenge because it gets me reading outside of my comfort zone and connects me to book nerds like you all.

Marie (marie123) | 39 comments Hi! I'm Marie. Last year I did the book bingo challenge, and this year I was excited to find this one and the read harder challenge! I'm going to try and complete them both. Challenges give me the push to read outside my comfort zone.

message 203: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Tack | 31 comments Hi all, I'm Jessica, stay-at-home mom of 4 in central Ohio. My hubby and 11 y/o daughter did the 2015 challenge with me last year. My daughter finished in October (and probably topped all of us with pages/words read), hubs finished in mid-December, and I... got a little derailed throughout Nov/Dec, and ended up 5 books short.

Husband and my dad are both eager for the new challenge. Daughter and I waffled but are now in! My main reason is that I enjoyed having my reading horizons broadened. There are books I read in 2015 that I never would have tackled if not for the challenge! Some were total duds, but there were a few gems that I am grateful for being exposed to! (Jane Eyre, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Goldfinch, Bright Side and Gus, etc.)

May need some input along the way (especially for my kiddo - any thoughts on what an 11 y/o 5th grader should read for "A book you haven't read since high school?"

Already nervous about the political memoir and the book of poetry... but who knows, maybe I'll stumble across another gem?

message 204: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments For an 11yo I'd say to change it to simply "a book you should read in high school" then look up common reading lists and do one like 1984, to kill a mockingbird, animal farm, the great gatsby, lord of the flies etc

Jessica Holbrook (jessicalh08) | 133 comments Hi!

My Name is Jessica and I'm a Library Clerk in Gaston County, North Carolina and also am going to school for my Medical Coding Certificate. I came across the the 2015 Challenge this summer (which was to late for me to start) and luckily remembered to track down the 2016 when it came out. I've always loved reading, but have stuck primarily with YA so I was super excited to see that challenge would take me way out of my reading comfort zone! I'm ready and excited to tackle this challenge!

Maybe give her one of you or your husbands favorite books from high school!

My 11 year old does this with me too! I'm sure that we will bounce ideas off of each other - I'm thinking of having her read/listen to either "Wurthering Heights" or "Midsummer's Night Dream" for the high school category. We often download an audiobook to listen to in the car!

message 208: by Patty (new)

Patty Rose (pattyrose31) | 18 comments My name is Patty Rose. I am a children's pastor and director of an amazing mentoring ministry called Kids Hope USA. I live in central Ohio and love to read when I am not working on my master's degree and homeschooling our 11 year old daughter! I started the challenge last year with my daughter and was able to finish up most of the categories, but then I had to stop in September when I started classes. I'm determined to finish both this year! I am planning on counting some of my reading for my master's classes as part of the challenge.

I look forward to chatting with you and gleaning suggestions for each of the categories!

message 209: by Ashlee (new)

Ashlee (ashleeg) I'm Ashlee, a stay-at-home/homeschooling mom. (2 kids 4 & 6). Working on getting my first novel published (fingers crossed). We just moved to Winston Salem NC last month. I did the 2015 challenge with A LOT of double counting, my goal is to have each of the 41 books fit their own category. I'm excited for the challenge.

message 210: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (ohmandy70) Hi. I'm Mandy. I live in a small town just north of Charlotte, NC. I work in corporate benefit plans and depending on the time of year, the job allows me lots of time to read during what would normally be work hours. After spending 20 years in a job that required 60 hours a week minimum, I know I'm living a dream and am appreciative of it.
Even though I read 76 books last year, it was still really difficult to finish the challenge. This year looks much better in my opinion.
Looking forward to completely changing up my list for this challenge as I read about what other people have read and enjoyed.

message 211: by Helen (new)

Helen (cooksbooks78) | 11 comments Hi everybody, I am Helen from Liverpool UK. I am 37, married and unable to work due to disability. I love reading, I am well known for always having a book close by!!

I attempted the 2015 challenge, I didn't do too bad; I was 8 away from completing. I am glad to have found this group, the suggestions that I have already spotted have been really great. Excited to smash this challenge with you all. Happy 2016, and happy reading!

message 212: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne (rkmorita) | 41 comments Aloha from Hawaii! My name is Roxanne & this is my 2nd attempt at the book challenge. I discovered last years reading list late in July & was able to finish about 30 before the holidays hit. I am looking forward to attempting this years list and getting ideas and inspiration from other bibliophiles; especially in the genres I don't normally read or is usually interested in. Being able to interact and seeing suggestions and recommendations is certainly going to help. Good luck everyone!

message 213: by Angie (new)

Angie Jenkins (longerdecember) | 6 comments Good morning everyone!

I'm Angie. I'm from California, and I drink far too much coffee. I work in mental health care with high risk children & teens, and reading is one of the ways that I remain optimistic about the world. I'm really excited for this group!

message 214: by Elke (new)

Elke Sisco | 33 comments Hi all, and thank you for the nice welcome, Ann!

I'm Elke, born and raised in Germany, but I've lived in California since 1990. I read almost anything. I don't care what genre, just tell me a story!

I find that I am happier and smarter when I read more, and this challenge sounds like great fun. I made my reading goal for this year 30 books, so I will interpret the challenge creatively, and if I read a sci-fi novel set in California that has a blue cover, then I will check off all three. Mwahahhaaaaaaaahahaha!!!!

message 215: by Laura (new)

Laura | 44 comments Hi! I'm Laura and I'm a stay at home mom living in Minnesota. I have 2 children, a 5 year old daughter and a 2 year old son. I love reading. It is such a stress reliever for me. But I have been putting it on the back burner over the past year. I hope to change that with this challenge.

I love trying out all types of genres. I think this challenge will be great, because it could lead me to books that I would have never previously read. I'm really excited for this group :)

message 216: by Rona (new)

Rona (ronadareader) Hey I am Rona from Ireland and after trying the 2015 challenge and thoroughly enjoying it, I decided that I would like to try this years one too!.

I was thinking of re- reading The Catcher in the Rye (although I MAY have read this again in college...?), but obviously content isn't really appropriate for an 11-yr-old! I am trying to brainstorm and remember required reading back in high school, but I keep second-guessing myself! I remember having a fabulous reading list for US History junior year... I might need to contact some old classmates and see if they can help me recall more titles!

(Patty - you are in Columbus area also?)

message 218: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Blythe (andreablythe) Hi all, I'm Andrea. I generally try to keep my reading diverse by doing a category challenge with self-picked categories. But I love the idea of this list and I'm curious to see how far I can get with just my general reading habits.

message 219: by Reyna (new)

Reyna (neonwolf247) | 10 comments Hello! I'm Reyna. I'm from L.A., California and just last year I got back into reading. I was only able to read 76 books for 2015, which if I say so isn't so bad for someone who hasn't read books for a couple years. I am in love with reading and really mad at myself for stopping. This is my very first reading challenge and I heard about it through a booktuber I follow, I also got my friend to try the challenge as well. I tend to read romance, fantasy, mystery, and recently getting into graphic novels and comics so I thought with this challenge it would give me the chance to make me go out of my comfort zones. I'm really looking forward to completing this challenge(hopefully) as well taking out some books from my tbr list.

message 220: by Leigh Ann Jones (new)

Leigh Ann Jones | 23 comments Hey everyone! I'm Leigh Ann and I live in Virginia. I am a full time student working on finishing my masters degree majoring in special education. I also work as a paraprofessional at a local elementary school. I typically don't let myself read during the semester, but when I saw this challenge I decided I'd bend the rules for my last semester. Hopefully I'll be able to pull myself away from the challenge at times and get my required readings done. I am so excited that now finally seems to be the time to pull down all of those books I've been collecting and meaning to read and to get a chance to read something I might not have chosen for myself!

That's really cool! I grew up around the Virginia Beach area but moved out to Farmville for school.

message 223: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 23 comments Hello! My name is Debbie. I saw the challenge and I thought this would be a good way to branch out to different books.

message 224: by Juanita (new)

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments Welcome, Debbie!

I think a good percentage of us are here for that very reason. We hope you have fun with the challenge. Keep us posted on your progress. Be sure to share your suggestions and look for ideas in the discussion threads for each prompt.

Have a great 2016.

message 225: by Regan (new)

Regan (mollytornado) Hi, I'm Regan. I'm 21-years-old and live in NSW, Australia. It's my first time attempting a reading challenge. I'm hoping that it will push me to read more and, like many others, push myself out of my reading comfort zone. I don't have an affinity for any particular genres, but some of my favourite reads have been 20th century classics and sci-fi.

I'm looking forward to engaging with people in this group over books. :)

message 226: by JoAnna (new)

JoAnna | 84 comments Hi, everyone! I'm JoAnna, I currently live in a suburb of Philadelphia and I work as a Nanny for a family with two year old twin boys. I have pretty eclectic taste when it comes to reading. I'll read almost any genre (not a huge fan of romance, though), and I'll give just about any author a chance to win me over. once they have, I'll likely read everything they've ever published! Looking forward to participating in this year's challenge!

message 227: by Mike (last edited Jan 05, 2018 02:59PM) (new)

Mike | 443 comments I'm Mike. I live in South Bend, Indiana (Go Irish!). Married with three kids aged 9-15. Found the Popsugar challenge list on facebook when a friend posted it, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm a slow reader, especially when the book doesn't grab me, so in order to have a chance at finishing I'm going to be looking for short books that fulfill many of the prompts.

message 228: by Katja (new)

Katja Hi! I'm Katya, a Russian girl currently based in Berlin, Germany, working in media. I majored in German literature and used to read a lot at school, but now I'm short of time and I'm struggling to read more. Found Popsugar challenge list in December 2015 and though it would be fun.

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments Mike wrote: "I'm a slow reader, especially the book doesn't grab me, so in order to have a change at finishing I'm going to be looking for short books that fulfill many of the prompts. "

Welcome, Mike!
Be sure to check out the bookshelf for a "book you can read in a day". There will certainly be books that fit multiple prompts there.

message 230: by Kira (new)

Kira (kiraaa) | 31 comments I'm Kira, I live in Memphis. I was a big reader throughout childhood and my teen years, but after college I became one of those people who only read a handful of books a year at most. I've been wanting to get back into reading a lot for a couple years now. I considered doing the Popsugar and Book Riot challenges in 2015, but I ended up doing a movie challenge last year. This year I'm focusing on reading and hoping it becomes a habit again.

message 231: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I'm Rachel, and I live in Canada. I have a full-time job working with young adults who have special needs. I used to be a huge reader, but going to university followed by college ate up most of my time and prevented me reading much (if anything) for fun for a long time. I did my best to bring books to school to read during breaks between classes, which worked well for some years and horribly for others.

This is my second year doing a reading challenge. I did the PopSugar Challenge last year, and I loved it. It really motivated me to keep reading, and to branch out and try new kinds of books. This year, I've decided to do the PopSugar Challenge (in 15 months) and the GoodReads Around the Year Challenge (within the year, since I chose this one first).

message 232: by Bridget (new)

Bridget | 26 comments Hi, I'm Bridget. I am a married mother of three and Nana to two. I love in Minnesota at the moment. I am 51 as of the 12th of Jan. I consider myself an eclectic reader. There are a few genres I stick clear of. Horror, Harlequinesque Romance, Wars that actually happened...

message 233: by Michele (new)

Michele Aylesbury (majkmom4) Hi, I'm Michele. I'm a single mom to 4 kids, 3 grandkids. Live in a small town in Utah. I found this group when I went looking for other people doing the same Library sponsored challenge as I am. I'm pretty sure they got their list from last year's (2015) Popsugar list. It's very similar. I've decided to do both challenges at the same time, allowing myself to check a book off both lists if it fits. I've started a Google spreadsheet to keep track. (I'm chronically organized LOL) I typically read about a book a week (read 50 last year for the goodreads challenge) so hopefully I'll be able to get through them all. Looking forward to sharing my reading experience with you all!

message 234: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (purpleypumpkin) | 5 comments Hi everyone, I'm Kimberly and live in Canada. So glad to have found this challenge on Goodreads! I first came across the Popsugar list on Pinterest and thought it was a great way to encourage me to do more reading. I also think it'll help me broaden my horizons. I have a tendency to stick with authors or genres that I enjoy. This is my year to try something new!

Mike, if the book doesn't grab you in the first 50 pages or so, feel free to put it down and choose another. I've learned through hard experience!

message 236: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlibby) | 2 comments Hello!

I am Sarah, a school teacher from Sussex, England and I am so excited to find this group! I completed the 2015 Popsugar reading challenge with some of my friends last year. I've added (hopefully) a picture of all the books I read for the challenge.
I didn't realise that there was a 2016 one until today, so a bit gutted I have lost a little time on this, but I am determined to catch up. I am really looking forward to being part of this group and seeing what everyone else is reading.

message 237: by Konnie (new)

Konnie (mrsnaz) My name is Konnie and I am an ESE teacher and mother of 3 (only one left at home). I came across this challenge on Pinterest today and thought it was just what I needed to get me out of the reading rut I'm in. I also have too many books I have purchased and not yet read. The life of a book addict it rough... lol

I'm slightly late to the game, but I'm sure all of this cold weather we are having in sunny Florida will give me plenty of cozy up time to get caught up. I'm starting with Beauty, a fairy tale retold.

message 238: by Fran (new)

Fran G | 37 comments Hi I'm Fran from Ohio. I don't know if I'll finish the whole challenge but already I'm reading different books than I usually do so that is exciting! My goal is to break out of the same old rut and read something different and that has already happened. Good luck with your challenge!

message 239: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (samritch) | 5 comments Hello!
My name is Sam. I'm a nurse from St George, Utah. My number one reading goal this year is to stay strong. Usually I start off well and go through long reading slumps throughout the year. I want to be more consistent! I'm also trying to focus on reading mostly female authors. I'm tracking my #readwomen2016 challenge on my instagram! sam_ritch

message 240: by Elise (new)

Elise | 2 comments Hello, my name is Elise. I am a 22 year old college student and waitress. I have been in a bit of a reading slump. I seem to be stuck reading the same types of books or binge watching netflix instead of reading. I saw this challenge and I thought that it looked like a really fun way to motivate myself to read new things. Im getting a bit of a late start but I'm confident I can catch up. Good luck everyone!

message 241: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Good luck, Elise! I use the challenge to diversify reading and to clean up my bookshelves!

message 242: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) Hello!

I'm Jody, an Australian living in Switzerland. I'm a photographer, and a single mum to my little spider (she is an actual human, two legs only). I completed the Popsugar challenge last year, and have since become addicted to reading challenges - I ended up completing another two challenges last year after finishing it. This year, I have 5 different challenges on the go. Yikes.

My reading tastes are fairly broad, but I'm not a huge fan of romance, serious sci-fi or westerns.

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else is reading for this challenge. I'm not quite as enthused as I was by the prompts for last year - Political memoir? Blergh! - but I've already found a book that I loved, and am hoping to find more.

message 243: by Nona (new)

Nona Laughton (nona39) | 2 comments I'm Nona from the UK, and I have never done any kind of reading challenge before.

I am looking forward to trying new genres to me. I tend to stick to murder/mystery's. I am sure I will find many books for all the different genres from what people have already read or have suggested.

message 244: by Jenncw (new)

Jenncw | 22 comments Hello, I'm Jennie. I read a lot of books. This is my second year doing the PopSugar challenge, though I was 4 books short last year. I read mainly romance, of all kinds, and I decided to do the challenge to branch out.

I'm curious, are there any romance readers here? I was making a few suggestions in the Jobs Folder and noticed that there are no romance recs. If no one reads romance, I won't throw any more in the mix.

I don't really read romance, but I would be happy to have suggestion in romance set in the future.

Welcome!

message 246: by Lyly (new)

Lyly (lldove) Hello I'm Lyly, I'm from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands and I moved to La Verpilliere 4 months ago. I've always been an avid reader but since becoming a mom 2 years ago I've slacked off, I decided to attempt this challenge to break out of my rut. I'm a sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal romance reader mostly but I'll read anything except horror and non fiction.

I'm Evy from Georgia. Just found this group and putting my list Together. So excited.

message 248: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (danithenerdiest) | 6 comments Hiya! My name is Danielle and this is my first year doing the PopSugar challenge. I live in South Carolina and have always been a reader. I lost interest in the past couple of years. In 2015, my New Years resolution was to read more, so I used my old Goodreads account to help me. I read 50 books last year, so I decided to up the ante and add a reading challenge this year. My goal as of now is 45, but I'm sure that will change later. It did last year.

message 249: by Shivalika (new)

Shivalika Swar (shivalika_swar) Hello! I'm Shivalika from Delhi, India. I just found this group while searching for Oprah Book Club and here I am! This is the first time I'm taking up the Popsugar Challenge and so far enjoying it a lot. Except nonfiction I'm up for reading anything and especially romance! :)

message 250: by Marta (new)

Marta (gezemice) | 78 comments Hi, I am Marta, I live in the Illinois, USA. I did the Popsugar challenge in 2015 with another group here on Goodreads. That group has become the Around The Year In 52 Books and are now doing their own challenge of 52 books voted on by members, which I am also doing. Then the Popsugar challenge for 2016 also came out so I decided to do it as well - and I found this group dedicated to it, so awesome!

Oh and hi, Jody :) (we are both doing both challenges)
