AbuSyfy, I moved your request to the "Unsolved" folder because you're looking for one specific book. (I did this by clicking the small "edit" link after the topic header - this only works on the full Desktop website, not the Mobile website or app.)

If it is a shorter story, this reminds me of something from the polish author Stanislaw Lem, they had the thing with the organic matter (basic components of life, like coal), and if something was missing, the copy would be missing parts. Will search for title, but have read a German translation (my main language), also some 40 years ago..., also not sure how long before that it was published .So time frame is probably right.
Stanislaw Lem
Might also help if you can say wether you remember reading anything from him or not, so as to rule him out.
Ingo - Searched for it, but without buying something, I cannot find it, and the books are still rather expensive. Maybe someone knows the title of Lem's story and/or the title of the collection, wether it is the book the OP searches for or not?!Still sure, it was not a whole book, but one of the collections of shorter stories, like Star Diaries / The Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy or The Cyberiad.

AbuSyfy, have you tried searching on Worldcat.org? For example:
https://www.worldcat.org/advancedsear... > Keyword: transporter (...etc...) | Subject: science fiction | 1970-1990 ? | Not juvenile | Fiction | Book | English

Possibly "Think like a Dinosaur" by James Patrick Kellyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Think_L...
"he story postulates a transportation device (supervised by a dinosaur-like race of aliens) which can transmit an exact copy of a person's body to distant planets. The original body is disintegrated once reception at the destination is confirmed. In the story a woman is teleported to an alien planet, but the original is not disintegrated because reception cannot be confirmed at the time. "

I have been looking for the title of a book that I read over 30 years ago.
The method of space travel is as follows- there is a network of kiosks dotted around the galaxy. They have a reservoir of organic material to rebuild bodies. If you want to travel from Planet A to Planet B, you walk into the kiosk, you punch in where you want to go, you dissolve and a copy of you is made at the destination.
It is illegal for two copies to exist, i.e. you must not allow two copies of yourself. This story is about as a result of a glitch, the protagonist knows that there is a copy of himself and the race is on between the two of them to kill the other. As they are copies of each other, they know exactly how the other thinks and a game of chase results. The authorities are after them too.
I just want to know the title and author as I would like my son to read the book. It was published before 1988 sometime, probably in the 1970's.
Any help would be most appreciated.
