When did you read it?How old is the boy, teenager or younger child?
I read it about 5-7 years ago, i don’t remember their ages but I remember that thr younger brother was like 2-3 years old

Is it The Giver? The novel follows a 12-year-old boy named Jonas. The society has taken away pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, the person who stores all the past memories of the time before Sameness, as there may be times where one must draw upon the wisdom gained from history to aid the community's decision making. Jonas struggles with concepts of all the new emotions and things introduced to him: whether they are inherently good, evil, or in between, and whether it is even possible to have one without the other. The Community lacks any color, memory, climate, or terrain, all in an effort to preserve structure, order, and a true sense of equality beyond personal individuality.

This book is about a boy who can travel through dimensions by handling balls of light, one day his parents out of no where decided to move to a village and stay there with his brother but during an event some demons (?) invaded and took his brother. During the invasion he saw some people who were able to fight the demons and one of them could create a portal like him but through some difficulty. He decides to follow them without them knowing but gets caught soon and explains the situation to them. Time works differently between the dimensions so what could be 5 days over there could actually be 7 years... They look for their brother for a long time and finally get a clue that the brother is being held captive ( or something ) by the demon king... They manage to get there somehow but the king has given an opportunity to get his brother back... The boy has 3 chances to say who stole his brother and if he can get it right, his brother will be returned to him.

During this time when it was his last chance left, the brother realizes that he himself had stole his brother... it was never his brother to begin with but he consequently forgot that he had accessed a dimension by accident and just picked him up from there and his parents never told him about it... he takes ( or he doesnt ) his brother home to his family and realizes that it has been a lot of years since them invasion event and when his parents saw them ( or him ) they took themselves back to their own previous home... after some time the boy realizes he has caused a lot of trouble for his parents since he was young ( the parents knew they didnt have another child but didnt have the heart to tell the boy ) and now again because he came back and this caused a lot of changes in the parents lives, the boy decides to leave his parents so that they could have some peace and creates a portal to the previous group’s leader. The leader had been searching for people with special talents to overthrow the demons and the boy had a long conversation with him and the boy realizes he is one of the people he is searching for because of his powers to easily create portals.
