Hi, all! I joined this group to learn more about the biographies you're reading and which new titles you're recommending. My next book is a biography. Sister Novelists: Jane and Anna Maria Porter in the Age of Austen is coming out September 6, 2022, and I'm looking forward to connecting with people interested in stories about strong women and British literature. Sincerely, Devoney

What They Didn't Burn: Uncovering My Father's Holocaust SecretsBy way of introduction, my investigative memoir...WHAT THEY DIDN'T BURN just became an Amazon #1 BEST SELLER in its category.
Not fiction, just reads like it
"It's factual, but evokes strong emotions. It's not dry and dusty, instead reads like fiction through good writing. It doesn't dramatize or become hyper emotional for effect. It's just so real. So frighteningly real and true." -- Katarina, GoodReads Librarian
Hi everyone, I'm Rich Flanders, new to Goodreads and just starting to forge my way through all its treasures. Favorite memoirs/bios include Pleasant Valley by Louis Bromfield, Out of Africa by Dinesen, A Moveable Feast, A Year in Provence, Autobiography of a Yogi. Looking forward to discovering more from you all. I hope to add my new book here soon, Under the Great Elm - A Life of Luck & Wonder.

I mostly read memoir - just finished miriam margoyles memoir which was very funny in places - quite outrageous - also JoanDIdion a year of magical thinking - other favourites are Alexandra Fuller- all hers.
I'm delighted to ''meet'' you, Sylvia, and to learn more about you from your Goodreads site, your bookshelf, etc. I see several authors on your shelf that I love as well, Barbara Kingsolver, Evan Connell, C.S. Lewis, Naomi Klein, Mary Oliver...I sense a kinship with your sensibilities. My own book - hopefully available before the end of the month - resembles in some ways ''nonfiction novels'' like The Razor's Edge and The Education of Little Tree, both of which are, among other things, spiritual odysseys. I look forward to speaking with you further, and swopping reviews as well. Thanks so much for reaching out. Rich

Hi Georgia - Thanks for an enticing invitation to look at your work! And I'll bite - My own new memoir might fill that description as well, ''UNDER THE GREAT ELM - A Life of Luck & Wonder'' (It's currently also a GR ''Giveaway'' for a few more days.)
Nice to ''meet'' you here. R

Go to the top bar where it says 'browse', then choose 'giveaways' from the drop box. A list of current giveaways will pop up. It is a drawing so no guarantees you will get one. It will say how many people have entered and most of the time there are hundreds, if not thousands, of others that have entered. I haven't won one yet, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Hi my name is Alisa! I am from Southern Illinois in the US. I love to read and I do have to say that I have a passion for history and autobiographies of all kind. History is my passion and I feel like there is always something new to learn from it. Lately I have been reading so many books about Holocaust survivors. Being able to look into the lives of those before us and to see different aspects amazes me. Being able to piece together the day by day aspects of life is a step to better understanding the past. I may never understand why things happened or why someone thought or did the things they did, but by reading about it I get little pieces of their puzzle.Hollywood actresses are another love of mine so I tend to read about their lives through biographies and autobiographies. This just helps us to all realize that they struggled just like the rest of us and make them more human in our eyes.
Gender and Sexuality is another area I like to dabble in. Reading through the lives of those that feel they do not belong in their own skin helps me to become a more open minded individual.
This is just a like bit about my reading habits. I hope to be able to find people in this group who share some of my passions and that I can get some active discussions out of it. Nice to meet you all!

Welcome to the group. I'm relatively new here too. I love memoirs and have written several. I grew up not far from you (in the St. Louis area) and that part of the country appears in all 4 of my books. Because you have an interest in gender and sexuality, I think you would enjoy my latest book, "I Think I'll Prune the Lemon Tree". As a gay man, I talk openly about my life, its challenges and opportunities along the way. I now live in Arizona. Also, I recommend "All the Young Men" by Ruth Coker. It's the true story of a woman who cared for AIDS patients in the 1980s. Anyway, all the best to you!

Hi KP and welcome!
Hi KP and welcome!
Good Morning Everyone,My name is Rebecca and I became a first time author last year. I started my journey into writing 3 years ago when I had so many things I wanted to share but didn't know where to begin. I started out with 5 titles each one having so many idea's. However, it was the story about my daughter that drew me to write first. Although as hard as it was to bring back the memories I wanted readers who experienced somewhat of the same to know they are not alone. I welcome all to read it as it deals with sexual assault, depression, drugs, and how I as a single parent had to have strength through it all. Yes, the cover picture is that of my daughter who had taken the picture and it just matched with the story that needed to be told. The book is called "Help Me Mommy"-A Daughter's Struggle From Victim To Victorious. It can be found on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Help-Me-Mommy-...
I also welcome reviews on the book as well. This will be a series as I work towards the next book.
Thank You and have a Wonderful Day!

Hello Lisa! I just joined too. We can be newbies together!
This is my first post as a new member. I finished reading Raised in Ruins last night. It is a memoir of a young family living off the land in Union Bay, located in southeast Alaska. I related to this story because I lived across the bay about a decade after the family moved away and raised my children on Prince of Wales Island. So essentially, when the family in the book looked out across Clarence Strait, they saw Thorne Bay, where we would live in the near future, and when we looked across the strait, we saw Union Bay, where they had recently left. The children in Raised in Ruin were completely isolated from anyone else most of the time. The stereo played outside while the children ran and played barefoot on the beach and in the forest. We aren't talking about a California soft sand beach. Alaska beaches are tough. These kids were tough to the core in enduring isolation, loneliness, wildlife, being left alone out there at times, and living in a float house with limited conveniences.
Before the family lived in Union Bay, a fish cannery operated for decades before burning down. The author of Raised in Ruins researched and discovered three amazing stories of past cannery residents, which she shared at the end of the book.
Outstanding read.
