SOLVED. YA Fantasy series about a group of kids. Read around 2005. [s]

I remember reading a book, I think a series, about a bunch of kids. I read this book around 2005, recommended by my British neighbor..
One of the kids was a heavier boy, who for some reason went to live with the underground people. He had always been considered fat but these mole people considered him too thin, which made the boy ver happy.
For some reason, this is the detail I remember. I hope it’s enough for someone to help me remember!

Fattypuffs and Thinifers, by André Maurois?

This is the tale of two brothers. Edmund is a little on the plump side and Terry is a bit of a rake. When they discover the countries under the Earth they are divided and sent to the warring kingdoms of the Fattypuffs and the Thinifers. The Fattypuffs eat hourly with light snacks in between. The Thinifers like nothing more than discipline and work six days a week.
