message 52: by Paulette (last edited Jan 18, 2015 05:49PM) (new)

Paulette (pbrooks17) | 30 comments I am reading Black Skies: An Inspector Erlendur Novel by Arnaldur Indriðason, a great detective series set in Iceland. I would start with Jar City if you start the series

message 53: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Zavoral | 7 comments I persevered through the Count of Monte Cristo, but I would not recommend it to any of my friends. I guess I'm not cut out for the old classics. I could not read more than a few chapters at a sitting because it kept putting me to sleep. There were a few chapters that were engaging, but for the most part I found it predictable and strung out.

message 54: by Meliza (new)

Meliza (mecawish) | 9 comments I'll be reading something from Jose Saramago next month. :)

message 55: by Cheri (new)

Cheri | 14 comments Well, I've just picked up and read The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami. This completestwo tasks in one- Translated from another language & a graphic novel, I think.

message 56: by ☕Laura (new)

Tammi | 5 comments Judith wrote: "One of my all time favorite books. If you enjoyed Shadow of the Wind you should also read books 2 and 3 The Angels Game and The Prisoner of Heaven. I understand Zafon is working on book 4."

I am reading The Angels Game now, counting it as my task #19. So far, I am loving it as much as I did Shadow of the Wind!

message 58: by Michael (new)

Michael (union_cannoneer) | 25 comments I'm having a hard time deciding on this one! Perhaps I'll go with The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, which has been sitting on my TBR shelf for ages.

message 59: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 71 comments Just completed this task with "Ruby Red" by Kerstin Gier! It was originally published in German. I actually completed this task with another book, but I am trying not to double up reads! This book was a cute YA, that I really didn't know was a translation until I did some random research, so it worked out well.

Pat Bryan | 21 comments Nele Neuhaus- The Ice Queen.

message 63: by Alli (new)

Alli (allim89) I coincidentally was just starting this book when I found this challenge. Summer House with Swimming Pool by Herman Koch (Dutch). Great translation so far. He also wrote The Dinner, which is also on my to read list.

message 64: by Anissa (new)

Anissa | 14 comments Loved loved loved The Dinner! Awesome unreliable narrator. Summerhouse with swimming pool was good too.

Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist"

It is creepy!

message 66: by Kate (new)

Kate | 3 comments I inhale Scandanavian crime novels. I just finished Blind Goddess for mine. It was good, but so far Anne Holt is not impressing me as much as Camilla Lackberg.

message 67: by Cheri (new)

Cheri | 14 comments I am currently reading The extraordinary journey of the fakir who got trapped in an Ikea wardrobe, translated from French.

message 68: by Sally (new)

Sally | 15 comments The Reader - Bernhard Schlink

I re-read this as have been meaning to for a while. Reads slightly differently when you know the outcome.

Krista (krista225) | 15 comments I finished the English translation of Italo Calvino's If On a Winter's Night a Traveler.

If on a Winter's Night a Traveler

Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) I finally finished The Barefoot Queen. It took me a month to read. I am so behind on my reading.

Very cool!

message 74: by Karen (new)

Karen I just finished The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death by Jean-Dominique Bauby for this task as it was originally published in French. What a beautiful book about such a sad subject. It is short, but wonderful.

message 75: by Altan (new)

Altan (skies) | 6 comments I've read Around the World in 80 Days by Verne, and maybe to double up on this challenge, the Iliad or the Odyssey!

message 76: by Emily (new)

Emily (embowlden) | 1 comments The Rabbit Back Literature Society is so good. Woke up at 4 am to finish it--definitely worth it. Twisty, dark but funny and peculiar. The jacket describes it as Twin Peaks meets Secret History, which is kind of true but also not nearly enough...

message 77: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 21 comments I just finished Grace which was originally published in Norwegian.

message 78: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Rao | 24 comments Finished Ru Ru by Kim Thúy for this task.

message 79: by Jayne (new)

message 80: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E Just finished The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. It was originally published in Finnish. I loved the book - it's quiet and has many ideas to think about.

message 81: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (madlibn) | 8 comments I read Please Look After Mom by Kyung-sook Shin by Kyung-sook Shin. It is translated from Korean. It is a poignant look into family relationships in Korea, and how you don't appreciate family members until they are gone.

message 82: by Charissa (new)

Charissa Dhaliwal | 5 comments I read The Dinner by Herman Koch, and I have to say it left something to be desired. I couldn't connect to any of the characters and didn't feel invested in the story at all.

message 83: by Ramona (last edited Mar 18, 2015 06:55AM) (new)

Ramona Mead (ramonamead) I've just started My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante, originally written in Italian. It was recommended on a recent Book Riot post about new translations from Europe and is supposed to be really good! I'm liking it so far.

Jayne Cawthern | 26 comments Ramona wrote: "I've just started My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante, originally written in Italian. It was recommended on a recent Book Riot post about new translations from Europe and is supposed to be really..."

I think you'll like it! And there are two sequels, so you can read Book
2, The Story of a New Name, as the Book Published by an Indie Press selection.

message 85: by Denise (new)

Denise | 27 comments The Grandmother
Not sure they'll be many other people reading this one, although I recommend it. I read The Grandmother by Bozena Nemcova. It was a great read, very interesting!

message 89: by Tara (last edited Mar 28, 2015 01:05PM) (new)

Tara | 7 comments The Shadow of the Wind is a definite possibility for me. Also considering one of two books that have been on my list forever: Anna Karenina or The Odyssey. I've also been hearing really good things about The Name of the Rose Can't decide!!

message 90: by Mary Sue (new)

Mary Sue | 61 comments I just read The Double by José Saramago by José Saramago. I was disappointed with this book. The story concept was intriguing, but I found the writing style difficult and was just not engaged.

message 91: by JeNee (new)

JeNee (shewouldstay) | 7 comments Read The Suicide Shop for this challenge. Short, but funny. I definitely loved his style. I'm going to check out some more work by him.

message 92: by Loreen ☕️ (new)

Loreen ☕️ | 0 comments This was originally published in Japanese The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondō

message 93: by Mj (new)

Mj | 32 comments I finished And the Birds Rained Down by Jocelyne Saucier on March 17th. This book was originally written in French (one of Canada's two official languages) and was translated into English for the edition I read. The Book was one of five finalists for 2015 Canada Reads - the theme being a book that will break down barriers. In 2011, it also won the 5 Continent Francophone Award for Fiction. And the Birds Rained Down is a wonderful book that writes about the freedoms, choices, friendship and love possibilities we all have, no matter what age we are.

message 94: by Jeimy (new)

Jeimy (wanderingbookaneer) I originally wrote that I was going to read The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden, but I just finished Bernhard Schlink's The Reader. I am counting it for this task.

message 95: by Sophie (new)

Sophie I read another Murakami book for this one, The Strange Library.

message 96: by Karen (new)

Karen | 14 comments Hershel wrote: "I'm having a hard time deciding on this one! Perhaps I'll go with The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, which has been sitting on my TBR shelf for ages."

I hope you read this. I read it last year and thought it was one of the best novels I had ever read. I had just never come across anything like it in my experience. Just amazing.

I read "The Brothers Karamazov" earlier this year, and so I'm designating it as the book for this task. I liked it fine, but it seemed overwrought to me, at least compared with "Anna Karenina," which I've read three times.

message 97: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Schwartz | 54 comments I finally finished reading The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir to complete this task. I can't recommend this for the casual reader. It is an opus and I found a difficult read.

message 98: by Cara (new)

Cara (cbelle48) | 2 comments Just finished "The Son" by Norwegian author Jo Nesbo. This book was good. I am a big fan of his Harry Hole series.

I tried to read The Dinner by Koch for this part of the challenge. Unfortunately, I got 110 pages in and realized I didn't care. I still had no idea what was going on, I didn't care about a single character, and to be honest, more of them annoyed me than not. I do have Summer House with Swimming Pool but now I'm hesitant to even pick it up. I'm going to look for something different for this part of the challenge. Color me currently disappointed with Koch.

Jen (reader44ever) | 60 comments For this task, I read The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. It was wonderful! Beautifully translated by Lucia Graves, I loved it. Reading it, I felt anger, worry, sorrow, joy. I cried (tears of relief, I think). It was just such a good story. :-)

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
