I have so much Sci-Fi waiting to be read the real challenge here will be choosing which to count for this task! I'll probably pick an author I've been meaning to read for ages now like Octavia E. Butler. One of my personal lifetime reading goals is to work my way through the major speculative fiction awards winners and nominees (like the Hugos, etc).

Yes, you don't have to be a sic-fi lover to appreciate The Martian. The author claims that everything in it could really happen, if not now, in the near future, and it's mostly a great adventure (with laughs!)

I think I am the only person that didn't like The Martian! I found it very technical and couldn't get interested in the characters.

I don't usually read sci-fi, but Daughters of the North is by one of my very favorite authors, and seems to qualify as "sci-fi" since it was nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke award.

If you don't like hard core sci-fi, maybe try an alternate history novel (which is included in the sci-fi Genre) like "The Yiddish Policeman's Union" by Michael Chabon. It won 4 different awards - Hugo, Nebula, Locus, & Sideways. I haven't read it yet but it was highly recommended to me by a young bookstore clerk.

I was thinking about this one too! It'll probably be that or by Walter M. Miller Jr. But whichever I end up picking for this specific task, I intend to read both by the end of the year anyway.

I read The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood for this task. I loved the book, but I'll have to read something uplifting next.

Since Fantasy is considered a sub-genre of Scifi, I say go for it.

I think Anne Rice is generally considered Horror or Dark Fantasy.

I have read American Gods and I definitely would not consider it to be Sci-Fi, but more Fantasy. As a reader of both Sci-Fi and Fantasy, I consider them to be very different genres.

I would definitely second Tammi on this - they might both be considered speculative fiction, but scifi and fantasy are completely different from each other otherwise; fantasy is definitely not a sub-genre. Sometimes authors will do some funky things where there seems some overlap - magic + tech somehow, but that is something rather different too.

I think that for people who do not read a lot of Sci-Fi or Fantasy, I would not focus too much on whether the book you choose is more Sci-Fi over Fantasy. I read a lot in both of these genres and DO consider them to be similar and even overlap sometimes. Read whatever YOU THINK is Sci Fi, as long as you are reading! :)

I understand why it is such a big hit. Sci-Fi isn't an easy genre for me to read which is why I went to a YA book for this category. Thanks for the question! Eva

I read for this task. Wow. This book was wonderful! It was hilarious and suspenseful. If people are new to sciFi I think this is a great book to start off the genre with.

Already read Golden Son by Pierce Brown for this one, but I am sure I'll come across more.
This one was fantastic - second in a trilogy, but surely one of the best sci-fi I've ever read.
