Abby | 6 comments This book is set in a parallel world to Earth. Some of the kids can leave (some want to see New York, Hollywood) but our main character stays. I think if you leave you can't come back. There is magic in the land, but the main character (a teenage boy) was perhaps tested and everyone thought he didnt have magic. Then there's a celebration of some sorts and the boy has a fit and starts floating, they realize he does indeed have magic.

He goes to a castle to train or learn magic, but he's by himself a lot. The hallways of the castle have symbols which he learns later points the way around the castle, because it's big and he gets lost easily.

There are other books in the series, I think, one of which there's a group of kids including the sorcerer boy and they're travelling across the land. There's a desert, which is dangerous and will kill you unless you are standing on one of the rocks in the desert. There's a floating city or house in which there's a little girl and her father. There's a land of rolling green hills, and one of the other characters gets lost in a forest, and is almost killed by wild dogs? Coyotes? But is saved by a queen? because she didn't show fear and didn't give up.

Thanks for the help :)

Do any of the series about "children with magic powers" mentioned in the post below sound familiar?

Mir | 802 comments The part about the castle sounded like Jones' The Lives of Christopher Chant, but I can't think of any of her books that mention Hollywood or New York.
