Here's two that comes to mind. I'm guessing a series would count for one choice? Both are indies. I hope it's ok? 1-Slow Burn Series, by Bobby Adair 1-Slow Burn: Zero Day 2-Slow Burn: Infected 3-Slow Burn: Destroyer 4- Slow Burn: Dead Fire 5-Slow Burn: Torrent
I've read the first four and they are all outstanding. I can't imagine the fifth one not being as good.
2-You and Me Against the World, by Raymond Esposito You and Me Against the World
I don't read much zombie books(I actually have a few I plan to in the coming months or so)Ones I've read that were good were
and
The Girl with All the Gifts was very good. It also had a very strong scientific description of what caused the Hungries.
I second
The Girl with All the Gifts. I also liked
Warm Bodies- it's very sweet, and charming.
Ex-Patriots (and the rest of the series) are a lot of fun. I don't really read a lot of zombie books, but very much enjoyed those.
thank you all. so far I think "the girl with all the gifts" and "the passage" are best of breed so far. am analyzing "the angels are the reapers" now.
The Passage is vampires, though, not zombies.
XOM-B
Ex-Heroes
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
One Undead StepWhat Zombies Fear: A Father's Quest
Dark Recollections
The Remaining
Hater (not technically zombies, but a terrific post apoc/infection story.
I thought that aside from patient zero in The Passage, that they were more like zombies. I'm not remembering any need to drink blood and the converted creatures lose all memories of who they were and function as blind instinct. There was no higher reasoning. It's been a few years since I read it but I think it could be argued either way.
I'll second The Newsflesh Trilogy (Feed, Deadline and Blackout), The Girl with All the Gifts, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (the audiobook is especially excellent), and add The Junkie Quatrain to the list. As a piece of writing, I believe it outshines the 'Ex-Heroes' series in every way.
I don't read many zombie stories, but one I read earlier this year and liked was I Zombie, by Jo Michaels.
Dead Men Kill: A Murder Mystery of Wealth, Power, and the Living Dead, must be the original zombie story. Written July 1934.♥,
Cat at Galaxy Press
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, the book is amazing, but if you can get the complete version of the audio book, please do.I quite enjoyed Ex-Heroes and Ex-Purgatory.
Oh, The Walking Dead, Compendium 1 and The Walking Dead, Compendium 2 and then all the others.
But thanks everybody for all your suggestions!
Fourthly, this collection/ anthology is pretty great Zombies Vs. Unicorns, too.
finished "the reaper are the angels" and I loved it. there were technical issues that might annoy some but the voice of the main character was unique and for me worth the price of admission.
Might want to try Handling the Undead by Lindqvist
and Carrie Ryan's Forest of Hands and Teeth
. Warm Bodies I'll second, only the end of it is just odd.
Sarah wrote: "I thought that aside from patient zero in The Passage, that they were more like zombies. I'm not remembering any need to drink blood and the converted creatures lose all memories of who they were a..."No, they're vampires. Can't go out by day, afraid of light, etc.

Ex-Heroes and subsequent novels are great quick reads and a good mash-up with the Superhero genre. World War Z is must reading for any Sci-Fi or Horror fan. Super fun.
