SOLVED. Historical Romance regency? about a secret group of men that has to find a traitor who is a women. First book is a duke that has to go to a house party and investigate the lady of the house who is a widow

After a couple of hours of scrolling just searching historical fiction, I found it.

Title: Wicked Torment by Carole Mortimer
Series: Regency Sinners

The duke's name was Wolferton.


I believe I read it in 2018 or 2019. Checked my Libby history( it was from the library) and could not find it, maybe not remembering correctly (or because library only recently went to Libby and was previously using the Overdrive app). I've tried Google with multiple searches and keywords not finding it. I've tried searching on the Libby app using a general search as well for historical fiction. I guess I didn't add it to my Read books on Goodreads either.

The second book I think had to do with another of the group who ends up stranded in a cabin with the women he's supposed to be investigating.

I think they would be classified as high heat level, not a sweet romance. I don't think it was classified as erotic literature either but could be wrong.

For this book the women isn't the traitor, she was just being secretive because her husband was abusive and had a baby with her maid and that she accidentally killed her husband . There is a subplot with the Duke's valet being gay and helping him by investigating the butler?? I think. The duke falls in love with the lady is willing to leave the country with her when he still thinks she's a traitor. The husband left marks on her back from the beatings.
