Thomas narrowed his grey eyes at me.
"It still gives me major heebie-jeebies that you call him that.
He said.
He adjusted the scabbard on his side for the ninetieth time since we'd arrived.
"And yeah, I was. Until I found out Gentleman Marcone was basically the overlord of this city's magic underground. He freaks me the fuck out and I hate the idea of being in the same building as him, let alone the same room. Let alone this room."
I scanned the room.
The ballroom was kind of crowded, and there were plenty of people showing... Enough skin.
"You gonna be alright?"
I asked.
Thomas nodded.
"Yeah," he ran his fingertips along the white silk scarf knotted into a cuff around his wrist. "I'll be fine."
I sighed. Maybe a semi-starved vampire wasn't the ideal partner on this particular mission.
Reading my mind, Thomas glanced over at me.
"Why didn't you ask Murphy to do this, or Michael?"
I leaned on the bar beside him. The bartender was off playing waiter, irritatedly taking orders and mixing them at a mobile cart.
"Michael has issues with Marcone."
"Because..?"
"No, not because of you. Just Marcone in general."
"Because he's a filth-peddler or because you're sleeping with him?"
He laughed when I thwacked him with my gloved hand.
"Who told you that?"
Thomas smirked.
"Kyraa."
I rolled my eyes, but the mention of my goddaughter got me wishing she was here. She'd turned twenty and, deciding her post-apprenticeship partnership with me had come to its natural end, returned to her hometown to start something new.
She was in business for herself in Boston, now.
I was proud of her, but I missed her every day.
"Anyway, there isn't really anyone Michael thinks can't be redeemed. But, Marcone was a little too close to the scene of the crime when Charity and Little Harry were in danger. I think it's a phobia of repeating history more than anything else."
Thomas nodded, a little guilty looking. That had been the first time we met.
"And Karrin?"
I sighed.
"I needed someone who didn't have her hero complex. There's a lot of stuff going on tonight a cop would want to put a stop to. I can't rescue everybody."
"Wow. I'm flattered."
"You know what I mean. I'm not trying to make it sound like I was scraping the bottom of the barrel, man."
Thomas snorted.
"Good job so far."
"Not to mention I fit in better standing next to you, pretty boy."
"Aw, you think I'm pretty?"
"Never mind."
"Nope, you said it."
"Thomas,"
"So you must-"

Trying to plan my triumphant return to the art world since i only drew character designs this weekend.
I got MC's older brother and older brother's friend from the Marines down on paper, finally.
I hate drawing tattoos, but not as much as i hate blank-skinned characters.

Also i need flesh tone markers. Anybody light skinned is the same color as the paper and anybody dark skinned is whatever i can manage with one brown colored pencil.
