Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am still trying to get to Boy's Life. I have never read this author before. Should I give it up and switch to the first book in this series?

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't think you'd be disappointed Cherie.

Yeah...this series is very good. I recommended it to my mom and i dont do that with a lot of the books i read. It's just a very good story and an interesting setting

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Boy's Life is very different from Matthew Corbett series. Robert McCammon is versatile!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments From what I've read so far I'd say Boys Life and Matthew Corbett series is as much as McCammon as I would dare recommend to Cherie though. The rest has been a bit too spooky or graphic for me to feel comfortable at this point.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thank you, Travis!

Marcus | 865 comments Just finished: Sharpe's Tiger to kick off a new big series by Bernard Cornwell whom I have come to love over the last few years thanks to the Ancient and Mideval historical fiction group. It was a really fun story and I like the characters a lot so far. I'm sure I'll enjoy this series for a long time since there are 21 books in the series...and it gives me some satisfaction of my itch for cannon and matchlock battles until the next Safehold novel comes out this fall

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I bought Sharpes recently too but have been hokding off starting it from the 21 book thing

yeah that is what has kept me away for so long too but the kindle versions of the first few were only like $3-4 so I figured why not...I'm reading a lot of different stuff just to mix it up this level and then will slog through some series in the next few levels.

Up next: The Reality Dysfunction

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Far Side of the World last night. I loved it! No spy stuff, no battles, just sailing around - besides Stephen and Jack being lost overboard and Stephen almost getting his head drilled at the end. Does the next one start right off where this one ended?

I have a few other books to clear away before I can think about the next.

Takes a long time when you have to read 14 books to finish a level, huh? That is where I am at on Level 7. Good going!

message 62: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Yeah it takes quite a while but it was a lot of fun bouncing around a few different series. I haven't started the "letter of marque" yet but it's sitting on my shelf just waiting

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Did you skip a book on your Aubrey/Maturin list?
The Reverse of the Medal is #11 but you are showing The Letter of Marque as your next read. Did you already read it?

message 64: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I loved The Reverse of the Medal! I was upset at first about how they were talking about Jack, and it was a shock about his son, huh?

I loved that O'Brian has made Sophie so supportive of Jack.

The whole trial and pillory thing was done very nicely too, and we get to keep sailing with The Surprise. YAY Stephen!!!!

Marcus | 865 comments Cherie wrote: "I loved The Reverse of the Medal!"

Ha. My sentiments exactly! It's nice they get to keep the Surprise, Sophie is great, poor Jack's "luck". I'll prob dive into "The letter of Marque" next month

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just noticed your Total Series Killed and Total Books Read roll up on each level. I may add this to my next completed level. I have been keeping a list of pages read for each level, but not the other totals. It may be two or three more levels before I can get back to Stephen and Jack in #12.

Yeah i was just curious about all of those stats so i decided to add them in :-) I'll probably do "The Letter of Marque" for level 8 but don't have any of the books after that yet. I like to space them out a bit because I try to savor each one and don't want to run out to quickly or have it get stale at all. The next couple levels should be quick because next month brings some new releases in long series I've been waiting for (mistborn, safehold). Also looking forward to SK's next short story collection this fall.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I admit that I have been spacing out the Aubrey/Maturin books to savor them too. I had no intention of killing them off for the challenge.

The only other series books that I have enjoyed listening to as much are the Nero Wolfe books by Rex Stout. There are 47 books over all, but only 27 are available in audio from my library consortium on Overdrive. I have 5 yet to listen to. They are pretty short compared to the O'Brian books. I have two others in print but I doubt if I will seek out the other 18 to kill the series. It is still only 100 points, even if I did manage it. I simply enjoy Michael Pritchard's voice so much that I even have gone this far.

Sarah | 18550 comments I too like your total books read and total series killed - I might have to add that to my thread too!

message 70: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments I saw the Nero Wolfe books on your list and was pretty intrigued...I'll have to check that series out :-) Once again adding to my to read list faster than I can read

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hey Marcus, you are a Teen Serial Killer! hahaha

message 75: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments that was supposed to be, you will be....

message 76: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Ha...we'll see. Level 13 may be a bit ambitious as I find myself getting distracted by books not in the challenge lately such as SK's latest collection of shorts. I also just finished "the letter of marque" though which was a lot of fun. I want to the local book store and found a lot of the later A/M books for $7 in like new condition but I don't have the next one yet
