Nice :-) I really enjoy this series but I like to space it out a bit and wait for a peaceful time when I can just enjoy the story. This challenge will probably prompt me to finally finish this series next year

message 7: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am not so sure about finishing this one but I definitely want to listen to more of them.

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Surely you need to include the Dexter series in there if you're using him in your title ;-)

I will cross my fingers with you for the next Kingkiller and A Song of Ice and Fire books!

I love the show too. I have read all but the last book. They started off good but the last couple were just ok for me. Things happen in a different order than in the show and the book cases don't always correspond with those in the show which I kinda liked as I felt that it added to my Dexter experience.

message 16: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Nice. I'll check it out

message 17: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Just finished The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle which was a bit out of my wheelhouse but was really enjoyable. I'd recommend it to just about anyone. On with the show for Level 1 with The Shadow Throne

message 18: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I did not know that The Wind up Bird Chronicle was a trilogy. Darn, why didn't I buy it last week when I saw it on sale. Lookin' good Marcus! I'm hoping to get the Aubry/Maturin book on my next level.

message 19: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Yeah I didn't know it was a trilogy at first either....I was pleasantly surprised. I'll be doing the Ionian Mission sometime soon

message 20: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Finished: The Shadow Throne which was not quite as impactful as The Thousand Names but I still plan to follow the series due to some of the unique elements including the cannon/musket element combined with fantasy

message 21: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I see like many of us you have discworld listed. Don't know if you knew there are 4-5 sub series in discworld. Rincewind. City watch and a couple others. The sub series are series of their own for this challenge so don't have to read all 40 odd books. I have abput half of the maybe 8 rincewind read so thats where I will begin

message 22: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Travis of NNY wrote: "The sub series are series of their own for..."

Yeah I would consider that but I've become a stickler for the Discworld books in that I read them all in publication order because I like to see some of the recurring "inside jokes" that carry over from one book to another and I don't want to miss anything in th progression of events...I'm just kinda OCD that way

message 23: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Completely understand. Iwas in order then read a couple out of order . now i can't decide whether to go in orderbor keep bouncing around

message 24: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Finished: The Grail Quest trilogy by Bernard Cornwell which was pretty entertaining from start to finish and capitalizes on the dominance of the English Longbow in the battle scenes

message 25: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Looks like there is a fourth book for this series, Marcus. Did you see it? 1356... I have never read anything by Cornwell and was curious about the first story. Too many already going to add to my huge list at this time though.

Marcus | 865 comments Cherie wrote: "Looks like there is a fourth book for this series, Marcus. Did you see it? 1356... I have never read anything by Cornwell and was curious about the first story. Too many already ..."

So I have read that one which is not part of the original trilogy but does further the story of Thomas of Hookton. I actually read that one first and it inspired me to read the trilogy as I thought Thomas was a pretty interesting character

message 27: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Just started the Pagan Lord to continue on with the path of Uhtred. The real Uhtred since there are at leadt 4 Uhtreds now. But finally we head to Bebenburg.

Whew, good to know, Marcus. I was afraid I was raining on your parade. If you were to do it again though, which one would you read first. 1356 or the first book in the trilogy?

message 29: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Trilogy first...makes the stand alone make a bit more sense and you have the character's back stories that way as well.

message 30: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Marcus, Goodreads does show it as book 4 of a series and that is our guide. Since you've read 1356, you would get 40 points for the series and 10 points for the two books you've read in the series, AND it would finish off level 1 for you.

message 31: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Well then...on to the next level!

message 32: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments I think I understand now why people are killing levels so quickly...i was working under the understanding that you could only kill a series by finishing it which meant that series that arent finished (ie: ASoIaF) wouldn't count for this challenge. Now that I know otherwise, I'll be sure to speed things up a bit.

message 33: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments You kill a series based on what's currently published. So since book 6 of ASoIaF isn't going to be published in 2015, considered it killed after you read book 5.

message 34: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I enjoyed Treason's Harbour a little more than the previous book. It starts up right where The Ionian Mission left off. There is a little more humor in this one and some funny stuff happens. It is getting really hard to remember who all of the admirals are. The spy guys are hard to keep track of too. I want to know what you think of the diving bell when you get to it.

message 35: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Well I'm glad I'm not the only one having difficulty keeping up w the admirals...good to know the two follow each other closely...I might just read them back to back...I have like the next four sitting on my shelf at home

Marcus | 865 comments Janice wrote: "I've got Book 1, Hard Magic on my list."

It's pretty good...kinda like x-men with guns in the 1930's

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments You might like the series by Myke Cole. his books have bern blurbed by Peter V Brett as being X-men meets Black Hawk Down. I quite liked the first one.

message 45: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Cherie wrote: "I enjoyed Treason's Harbour a little more than the previous book...."

Hey. So, I'm about halfway through this one and enjoying it much more than the last one. I am enjoying the humor (particularly around the diving bell, eg: Stephen wearing his good shoes down there) and the change of scenery. I had anticipated a lot more spying stuff in this one from some of the reviews but maybe that comes more in the second half of the book. Have you read any more of the series yet?

message 46: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments No, I have not gotten to any more yet. Seems like this series has gotten popular. Everything is on holds. I better jump on the next one.

I liked the diving bell in this one too. I thought it was interesting that it would come apart. Yes the spy stuff picks up a little. The camels were funny.

message 47: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments Cherie wrote: "No, I have not gotten to any more yet. Seems like this series has gotten popular."

Yeah I got lucky and got a few for good deals on amazon and another couple in pretty good shape from a local used book store...so I have the next three sitting on my literal TBR shelf at home. I think I'm going to google diving bells to get a clearer picture of what they are describing but it's pretty neat. I liked the whole argument about dromedaries that the liutentants had with stephen being politically neutral about the whole thing

Marcus | 865 comments Cherie wrote: "No, I have not gotten to any more yet..."

Just finished the book...very much looking forward to Stephen finding out about youknowwho being a French spy...jerk

I agree!

message 50: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 865 comments finished: The Queen of Bedlam

Great series...sad to see the length of the books will start to drop off dramatically after this one.
