I think this book was written in around 2016. The book starts in a futuristic "utopia" where energy is no longer a problem. The main character (male) finds a time machine and travels back to moments before the experiment. We see that the chances of the energy experiment succeeding are very slim and the main character then shows us how it could have worked out. I hope that's enough detail, without any spoilers. It is a fantastic book, which I lent to a friend and never got back. I'm hoping to find it again.
