Bill Nominations are now open for the December 2014/ January 2015 Group Read. You may nominate a book beginning today, going through December 10th. Voting starts the 11th, and runs through the 13th. For this period, I'd like to suggest that the mysteries nominated feature either a winter theme/ setting or a Christmas or other December holiday theme/ setting. There should be sufficient mysteries out there to choose from. Good luck.

Here comes the fine print: I know you've seen this a bajillion times, but we do need to post the general rules for Group Reads nominations:

1) Important: If your nomination wins, you will be the discussion moderator. Please do not nominate a book unless you're willing to do this.

2) One (1) nomination only per person. Neither self-nominations by authors nor nominations by their respective publishers or publicist will be accepted.

3) Do not cheat or manipulate results. It is not acceptable to create fake accounts to nominate books or vote in polls and it is not acceptable to invite people to the site for the sole purpose of nominating a book or voting for a book in a poll. It is not acceptable to ask for votes or influence the poll in any way. If the moderators feel that a group read poll has been manipulated, the book in question will be disqualified. If the moderators feel that the user(s) are fake accounts, these will be reported to Goodreads for further review.

4) Please do not repeat an author we have read in the last year. For the sake of expediency, here's the list -- just look back through November of last year going forward, and you'll know which authors NOT to include.

5) For your nomination please include Title, Author and Link (Use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box).

6) Since we are an international group, please check to make sure the book is readily available in more than one format. The last thing we want is to nominate a book that no one can get.

7) Finally, a word about series - Please consider whether the book you are nominating would be best read by someone who has read all the previous books in the series, or if it can be enjoyed by someone new to the series too.

Have fun and good luck!!

Actually, if it's okay, I need to withdraw my nomination, Bill. I realized I won't have the time to give to it if it wins. Can I do that?

message 13: by Bill (new)

Bill You can if you want, but I don't mind moderating if it wins. I've read before.

I won't ask you to do that, Bill. I was looking at my calendar & my January is pretty hacked up, but I'll have time to read it again before then just in case. You can let it ride (leave it in) - I will have internet access even though I won't be home much so it's okay.

Steve Hamilton is an Edgar winner and the series is great. I've read almost all of them. I highly recommend him to serious mystery fans.

This doesn't really fit the Holiday/ winter theme for December, Nano. Suggest you use it for the next group read?

Richard | 53 comments Hi guys, I'm new to the group but plan to join in on the next group read whichever book may win out. I have to say that all the choices look appealing but there is one which is really appealing; I won't say which mind.

Let the festive reading begin! Well, shortly.

Once the polls open I'm a firm believer in campaigning for the book you want to win.

This book received the 2001 Silver Dagger Award from the Crime Writers Association (UK). Fantastic story, vivid characters and setting. Set in Canada. I've been recommending this to friends for eons.

M. Dobson (meg_evonne) | 109 comments Baldacci's recent release The Escape, Book 3 of John Puller.

I also vote for 40 Words of Sorrow though.

message 30: by Bill (new)

Bill The two books that were chosen are The Ice Princess (Patrik Hedström, #1) by Camilla Läckberg by Camilla Läckberg; Tom will be moderating, and A Cold Day in Paradise (Alex McKnight, #1) by Steve Hamilton by Steve Hamilton, with Patricia moderating. Congrats on the selections. I hope you all enjoy.

message 31: by Matt (new)

Matt | 16 comments I'd like to nominate Lexicon by Max Barry (Lexicon) by Max Barry

At an exclusive school somewhere outside of Arlington, Virginia, students aren't taught history, geography, or mathematics--at least not in the usual ways. Instead, they are taught to persuade. Here the art of coercion has been raised to a science. Students harness the hidden power of language to manipulate the mind and learn to break down individuals by psychographic markers in order to take control of their thoughts. The very best will graduate as "poets", adept wielders of language who belong to a nameless organization that is as influential as it is secretive.

Oh, Matt! You're just a little late. Please definitely remember to nominate Lexicon for January's group read. I love Max Barry -- absolutely love him.

Welcome to our group! I know exactly how you feel. I did a postgrad in History and couldn't read what I wanted to for years. I'm still making up for lost time!
