WE ARE OPEN - WEEK TWO - PRESIDENTIAL SERIES: LANDSLIDE - December 8th - December 14th - Chapter Two - No Spoilers, Please
All, we do not have to do citations regarding the book or the author being discussed during the book discussion on these discussion threads - nor do we have to cite any personage in the book being discussed while on the discussion threads related to this book.
However if we discuss folks outside the scope of the book or another book is cited which is not the book and author discussed then we do have to do that citation according to our citation rules. That makes it easier to not disrupt the discussion.

So we begin Week Two:
Personality Profile of Reagan and Johnson
Let us try to come up with a personality profile of both men: Reagan and Johnson. How would you compare their work ethic, style in terms of getting things done, view of the world and of government, personality, hobbies, education and background, skill sets in terms of their previous work experiences and how each one delegated authority. And what qualified each one to be president.
What early life experiences shaped their attitudes and their philosophy on life and people? How close were they to their family and their family to them. Did they have children or pets? What made them angry or happy? What do you think were their finest moments and why?
Why do you think they viewed government and what was going to solve America's problems and what was going to make America more successful so differently?
Feel free to jump right in and tackle the above or discuss your own most interesting segment of this week's reading.

Hi Justin - this thread was not supposed to be opened up until Monday but I guess by mistake I left it open when I was trying to set it up - my mistake. (lol)
No problem I will leave it open now (smile).
Very interesting list - what is fun about trying to do this is that everyone could potentially have different lists or variations of what they remember or think is important. It is also fun because it jogs your memory of what you either experienced or read about. It establishes some iconic memories of the time period when they were president. And you can discuss some of the folks who surrounded these presidents or who were important to/or influenced them and what these presidencies accomplished.
The Alzheimer's for Reagan was tragic but many think it was a problem even at the end of his second term.
Don't feel bad about only being able to do Reagan - I would not have been able to do JFK fully without recently having visited his presidential museum.

Another fun thing to do is to think of the music of each president's era.
Let me try one. John F. Kennedy (put in the year which coincides when one of the presidents were in office) - and list the song and the artist - include a live performance of the song. Post which era and president.
1961 - 1963
How about the classic Little Sister and Elvis (smile) - This song was released in 1961 - this MGM video was dated in 1970 but the song was vintage Elvis and a hit in 1961.

Country Joe and the Fish, I Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die. First released in 1967, however, this is a clip from Woodstock.

Another great list Martin - what is great about these lists is that folks will come up with slightly different lists - Thurgood Marshall - forgot about that appointment.
Feel free everyone to discuss any folks, events, icons who are on these lists. The sixties were quite the period in our country's history (both good and bad).
People forget that though there was only a three year age difference between Reagan and LBJ - they were contemporaries - but LBJ was only 55 when he became president after JFK's assassination - Reagan on the other hand was 69 years old at the time of his election/inauguration for his first term! LBJ was born in 1908 while Reagan was born in 1911.

Brilliant Francie, brilliant. It captures the hippies, the Vietnam War, the feelings about the war and just about everything else during that period of time. The lyrics say it all. Goodness gracious how could we forget about Woodstock.

I do have a Goldwater tie in for this. I was having quite the Romeo and Juliet thing as a freshman in high school with the daughter of Goldwater people, who had expressly forbidden her to associate with me in any way. The Troggs version of Wild Thing is what her friends used to tease her.

Here is Dylan singing the 1964 (Newport Folk Festival - at the bottom of text box) civil rights anthem - The Times They Are a-Changin’ (Lyndon Baines Johnson era)
This is the song he sang for Barack Obama in 2010 at the White House. This was the first time he ever had responded and sang at the White House ever.
And this is what Barack Obama had to say about the whole experience and the President was the one who was awe-struck.
Source for below: http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity...
President Obama said: “Here’s what I love about Dylan – he was exactly as you’d expect he would be.
“He wouldn’t come to the rehearsal. He didn’t want to take a picture with me; usually all the talent is dying to take a picture with me and Michelle before the show, but he didn’t show up to that.
“He played The Times They Are a-Changin’. A beautiful rendition. The guy is so steeped in this stuff he can come up with a new arrangement and the song sounds completely different.
“Finishes the song, steps off the stage ... comes up, shakes my hand, sort of tips his head, gives me just a little grin and then leaves. That was our only interaction with him. And I thought, That’s how you want Bob Dylan, right?
“You don’t want him to be cheesin’ and grinnin’ with you. You want him to be a little sceptical about the enterprise.”
As an angry young man, Dylan was the voice of the counter culture in the 60s. He took on the US armed with a guitar and incendiary lyrics. But things certainly seemed to have changed.
His birthday was marked a few weeks ago by playing in China, the symbol of oppression. There were rumours that he had to submit his set-list to the authorities who apparently vetoed him playing some of his protest songs.
Yet Dylan has been consistent in his inconsistencies. He released an album of Christmas songs two years ago that was slated. He didn’t care.
His legacy as one of the greatest ever songwriters is untouchable. But he appears to be constantly restless.
He reworks his classics and he ignores the luxury of his mansions as he keeps touring. It seems it’s only when he’s away from home that he is really happy.

Goodness no Martin - Ed Sullivan hardly - that was a family show and gone are the days of a variety show like that. So many got their start on Sullivan - Elvis, the Beatles, loads. LBJ had his hands full during this time period.

Lyndon Baines Johnson with Him and Her (beagles)

Him and Her:
Him and Her, the most well known of the President Johnson's dogs, were registered beagles born on June 27, 1963. The President frequently played with the dogs and was often photographed with them. In 1964, President Johnson raised the ire of many when he lifted Him by his ears while greeting a group on the White House lawn.
Him sired a litter of puppies born in October 1965. President Johnson's daughter, Luci, kept two of the puppies, Kim and Freckles. Luci first named Freckles, "Pecosa," Spanish for a single freckle, but the puppy eventually became known as Freckles. Kim and Freckles were Luci's dogs. Kim moved to Texas with Luci after her marriage to Pat Nugent, but Freckles remained at the White House with the President.
Her died at the White House in November1964, after she swallowed a stone. Him died in June 1966, when he was hit by a car while chasing a squirrel on the White House lawn. When the Johnson's left the White House, Freckles was adopted by a White House staff member.

LBJ with Blanco

Blanco:
Blanco was a white collie born on July 19, 1963, and registered as Leader Blair Jamie of Edlen. He was given to President and Mrs. Johnson in December 1963, a gift from a little girl in Illinios. Before leaving the White House, President and Mrs. Johnson gave Blanco to a doctor and his wife in Kentucky. Blanco died in September 1974 of a heart attack.
It is reported that Blanco bit J. Edgar Hoover on the nose and he had to get stitches.

LBJ singing with Yuki

President Johnson "singing" with Yuki as the as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britian, David K. E. Bruce, watches
Yuki:
Yuki was a mixed breed dog found by President Johnson's daughter, Luci Nugent, at a gas station in Texas on Thanksgiving Day in 1966, while on her way to the LBJ Ranch. Luci named the dog "Yuki", which means "snow" in Japanese. At first, Yuki lived with Luci, but while visiting the White House, Yuki won the President's heart and became his faithful companion. On the President's birthday, August 27, 1967, Luci told her father that he could keep Yuki. When President Johnson left office on January 20, 1969, Yuki returned to LBJ Ranch with the President on Air Force One. After Johnson's death in January 1973, Yuki went to live with Luci Johnson Nugent and her family. Yuki died in 1979.
But in the end, President Johnson's favorite dog turned out to be a little stray terrier that his daughter Luci found at a gas station in Texas. This dog was named Yuki, and LBJ took him everywhere, like to cabinet meetings and to the East Room when he signed important laws like the Wholesome Meat Act. He even danced with Yuki at his daughter Lynda's wedding, and he wanted to include Yuki in the family wedding photo, but Mrs. Johnson said that was not going to happen. (Source for this paragraph - http://piperbasenji.blogspot.com/2010...)
It has been said that when LBJ died that Yuki was at his side.
And as luck would have it we have found an audio of LBJ talking about how dogs have always been his friends and he talks about Yuki and they end up singing together - very cute.

Him and Her:

Him and Her pretty much got to run around everywhere in the White House, and the President always carried dog treats in his pockets. Sometimes when there were lots of people outside, protesting against the Vietnam War, President Johnson felt better if he spent a little time with his dogs because, as he said, "They like me."

Ronald Reagan and Rex
Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, had several dogs but only a couple were lucky enough to make it into the White House. One of those lucky dogs was a dog named Lucky! Unfortunately, Lucky, a Bouvier des Flandres, didn’t have much luck. The dog seemed to be a bit too rowdy and aggressive and was removed from the White House. It was reported that Lucky would chase Nancy Reagan across the great lawn. Rex, who became the First Dog of the United States, was a much calmer Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Rex had a decked out dog house. Inside there was décor and framed pictures of Ronald and Nancy Reagan.

Funny photo - guess who is Him and Her - the one on the left - not sure who Lady Bird is holding - maybe Freckles or Edgar (smile)

This was Little Beagle Johnson when LBJ first married Lady Bird:
In 1934, he married Claudia Alta Taylor, who was mostly called "Lady Bird." They had two daughters, Lynda Bird and Luci Baines. Mr. Johnson, who was often called by his initials, LBJ, liked everybody in his family to have the same initials, so that is why he gave those names to his daughters. And also he had a beagle called Little Beagle Johnson. He told people that it was cheaper if everybody had the same monogram.

JFK's Dogs - Pushinka

Source for the following: (http://presidentialpetmuseum.com/pets...)
A bright spot during the cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union was Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s gift of a fluffy white mixed-breed puppy to little Caroline Kennedy
Pushinka, Russian for “Fluffy,” was a puppy of Strelka, a Soviet space dog that orbited the planet aboard Sputnik 2 in 1960.
The Presidential Pet Museum has found news accounts stating that Pushinka, then 6 months old, even arrived with her own Russian passport — listing her as “a non-bred type.”
The puppy Pushinka was welcomed into the family of White House pets during the John F. Kennedy administration. In fact, Pushinka and Caroline Kennedy’s Welsh terrier Charlie had four puppies together.
In a television interview with Larry King in 1995, the late John F. Kennedy Jr. recalled that he and his sister, Caroline, taught Pushinka how to go down the slide on the playground behind the White House. “Sending the dog down that slide is probably my first memory,” he shared.
Apparently Pushinka had a somewhat prickly nature. In his book American Legacy: The Story of John and Caroline Kennedy, author David Heymann relates a story from White House nanny Maud Shaw: Caroline and her nanny encountered Pushinka as she was being walked by a kennel worker on the White House grounds. As Caroline reached to pet the dog, Pushinka growled.
“Instead of recoiling, Caroline stepped behind the dog and gave it a swift kick to the rear end,” Heymann writes. “Emitting a howl, Pushinka turned tail and raced off into the night. When Miss Shaw related the story to JFK, the president smiled at his daughter and said, ‘That’s giving it to those damn Russians!’”

JFK - Pushinka and her puppies

Pushinka’s Puppies (Source for the following story - http://presidentialpetmuseum.com/pets...)
As for the puppies of Pushinka (a mixed-breed dog) and Charlie (the Welsh terrier), there’s an interesting story.
In August 1963, three months before the president was assassinated, the first lady asked staffers to pick 10 letters out of around 5,000 that children from around the country had mailed in asking for one of these puppies, born that summer.
From those 10 finalists, Jackie Kennedy picked two. Those two children received puppies Butterfly (female) and Streaker (male).

JFK and all of his pets and family

The Kennedy family poses with their dogs at Hyannisport: Irish spaniel Shannon, Welsh terrier Charlie, German shepherd Clipper, and the pups of Pushinka, who was a gift to Caroline from Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev.
It looks like Shannon is sitting with John John in this photo and Caroline is with Charlie. Pushinka is in the middle. And Clipper is the German Shepherd by Jackie.

Martin wrote: "Yeah, well, we'll always have The Smothers Brothers, and Jack Benny; and Red Skelton (and live TV), and Laugh In."
Very true - very different times.

JFK - Charlie and Pushinka

Source for following: http://thepoodleanddogblog.typepad.co...
From his early years through his political career, John Kennedy was an avid dog lover.
Like most male politicians, he was usually photographed with retrievers or setters. During the White House years he requested that the dogs be trained to greet the Presidential helicopter when it arrived back at the White House.
The Presidential dogs included an Irish Wolfhound, a German Shepherd, and an Irish Cocker Spaniel.
However, the favorite was Charlie, a little Welsh Terrier who was his daughter Caroline’s dog. Charlie was famous for playfully nipping at the gardeners as they tended the White House lawn.
At the height of the Cuban missile crisis when there was some doubt about whether civilization as we knew it would last beyond the next day or explode in a nuclear holocaust, President Kennedy had Charlie brought to the chaos of the War Room.
Traphes Bryant, the White House kennel keeper, describes the events.
"I was there in Jack Kennedy's office that day. Everything was in an uproar. I was then feet from Kennedy's desk as Pierre Salinger ran around the office taking messages and issuing orders while the President sat looking awfully worried.
There was talk about the Russian fleet coming in and our fleet blocking them off. It looked like war. Out of the blue, Kennedy suddenly called for Charlie to be brought to his office."
After petting Charlie for a while, the president relaxed, gave Charlie back to the kennel keeper, and calmly said, "I suppose that it's time to make some decisions."
The President made some decisions. The Russians backed off. The world went on.
As a sign of friendship and a peace offering, Soviet Premier Khrushchev gave Caroline Kennedy a furry mongrel named Pushinka, who was the puppy of a Russian space dog Strelka. Not worrying about differing ideologies, Pushinka and Charlie had four puppies together.
The President referred to them as the pupniks.

JFK's Shannon and Pekinese - not sure when John John got these pets

On a walk: As a child, John F Kennedy Jr walks his English Springer Spaniel Shannon and a white Pekingese pup
I guess this answers the above question:
1961 - 1963 John F Kennedy
President John F. Kennedy owned the following dogs:
Welsh Terrier - Charlie and Pushinka
German Shepherd - Clipper
Irish Cocker Spaniel - Shannon
Irish Wolfhound - Wolf
Terrier - White Tips, Blackie and Streaker
John F. Kennedy was the first president to request that his dogs meet the presidential helicopter when the president arrived at the White House.
Soviet Premier Kruschev gave him a dog named Pushinka who was the offspring of the Russian space dog Strelka. Pushinka had 4 puppies of her own puppies who JFK called “pupniks”! Pushinka often made the President laugh by climbing up the ladder to Caroline's tree house. The Prime Minister of Ireland gave JFK the Irish cocker spaniel, Shannon.

1963 - 1969 Lyndon B Johnson
Lyndon B. Johnson owned 7 dogs:
Mongrel - (Yuki)
5 Beagles - Beagle, Little Beagle, Him and Her and J. Edgar
White Collie - (Blanco)
As president he received as a gift the white collie, Blanco. He always shook hands with the dog whenever he left or returned to the White House.
His favorite dog, the beagle called Him, was run over and killed on the White House grounds. Edgar Hoover gave him a dog to replace Him which he named J. Edgar.
His mongrel dog, Yuki, was famous for disgracing everyone present in the oval office including the Shah of Iran. His next escapade occurred when he bit a White House police officer in the groin. Despite these indiscretions Yuki was honoured by his picture appearing on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.

1981 - 1989 Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan owned two dogs, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called Rex and a Bouvier des Flandres called Lucky.
The President was photographed being dragged across the White House lawn by Lucky in the presence of Margaret Thatcher. An undignified image for the President of the USA.
Here is the photo:

Because of incidents like the above, Lucky was sent to live in California at the Reagan's ranch - leaving just Rex, the little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel at the White House.
