Asra Nolan | 41 comments Conan style world protagonist arrives via Shuttle and fights evil. Conan/Heavy Metal art style. The graphic novels were the same style (and publisher?) as the Elfquest groups.
Sorry all I really remember is from the one comic I found in a box my wife proceeded to misplace. I met the author at a convention in Memphis, TN and he said he was from Alabama and the Queen was based on his (Wife?). Main protagonist came from Earth on a space shuttle then fought the ruling wizards the worlds freedom

Spoilers
Main protagonist came from Earth on a space shuttle fought and became King married the Princess. They had a child which they took with them when the royal helper (sorry don't remember the title) took them to the space ring that the ruling class used to live . They were knocked out and the protagonist was taken off by a girl with a huge gorilla (they were on the cover of the comic). She warned him that the "wizards" were still here and they were waiting for them. When they got away (after the girl and gorilla were killed) but it turned out the child was a fake and the Queen said "from now on this is my prince" and had all the old nurses killed.

In latter stories the true son regained his place and found a way back and forth from Earth.

Another of the graphic novels had a picture of a person with split colored skin

Asra Nolan | 41 comments Hey doing the bump. I believe it was out some time from 1985 -1993 in comic form. I had read the Graphic Novel some time 1989-92 at Walden Books and I can't remember where I got the mega sized comic from think it was back issues at a comic shop around the same time. I met the artist/writer at Mid-South Con 1994/5 (can't remember if it was the first or second time) and he said he based the Queen on his wife/girlfriend. I also think I remember him being from Alabama (possibly Birmingham).

Adele | 1435 comments This is just a guess, it’s not an exact match: The First Kingdom by Jack Katz I’ll try to get a link. Now that I am on my desktop - The First Kingdom The First Kingdom by Jack Katz

Rod Brown (rodbrown) | 5 comments Maybe something by Richard Corben, like Den?

message 8: by Asra (new)

Asra Nolan | 41 comments thank you both
The style of First Kingdom is close but in color and the main actors were all human and Den style is over the top. The comics were in the late 80's/ early 90's and after looking a bit I believe the hardback cover with the man with a half black/white face came out in 1989 as I remember Elfquest book 4 being out at the same time (they were on the same shelf with other books of the same type). Since Berkley Publishing Group did the Elfquest book I plan to look there (though I doubt my inept detective skill will find anything)

as I said above thank you for the help it helped with a couple of ideas and some interesting things to check out :)

Michele | 2488 comments Have you looked at the list of Mid-South Con guests to see if any names ring a bell?

message 12: by Asra (new)

Asra Nolan | 41 comments Ok it he/they were at MidSouthCon 13 (March 25–27, 1994) unfortunately they were just there as venders at least I am now sure of the time when it was out :)
Is there a specific genre for magazine comics that are turned into books ??

message 13: by Tab (new)

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Was the style of the cover similar to the painting style of Frazetta.
Or, did was the cover more like standard covers (thick black outlines, flat colors, etc)?

Do you know if the author did comics for mags like "Heavy Metal?"
Archive.org has a collection of "Heavy Metal" magazines if you want to sift through those?

message 14: by Asra (new)

Asra Nolan | 41 comments Hey sorry for not getting back to this; yes. it was closer to those but not in "Heavy Metal" he was independent publisher that didn't get lucky like Pini. the one I had (comic magazine) was a girl in a loin cloth with a warrior gorilla beside her in a door way and the hard cover reprint book had a picture on the cover of a guy with a black/white face.
arrg I can't believe this is so hard to find if I find where the box went that has it I will be so happy

Asra, have you tried asking on some of the specialty groups as well? You can search their discussion posts (using the full Desktop Website) and find many Conan related threads.

For example:
