Does this work for the mini challenge?"

Well, I am still trying to get my head around mini challenge. But i guess it does fit for 2 items though:

Mini challenge
lady : lady (actually multiple ladies) on the cover.

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Ok, for the words in the mini-challenge we're looking for the word in the text or in the title, the word on the cover (i.e. a moon on the cover for example) or the cover being the colour of the object (i.e. starfruit are a pale green/yellow so the cover being that colour).

For the numbers we'd like page numbers that match (or add up to it for things like 6, 12), that number in the series or the number in the publication date (using numbers for the month).

Does that help it make more sense? Please tell us if you are having problems understanding the rules everyone! We'd much rather try and help than leave you confused in silence.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hello everyone!

Please read this long post - thanks ;-)

Shockingly, the first month of this challenge is starting to near its end. Time has been flying a little it seems! So here are a couple of things:

1. HERE is the Countdown to the end of February, and thus the beginning of March.

All books for the February cards and mini challenge need to be finished before this countdown runs to 0. All books finished after the countdown will count towards our March hands.

2. In terms of cards, as Sophie has already told you, we're good and don't need to worry. The difficult ones have all been filled and the rest will fill up on their own as we keep reading books.

The mini challenge however requires some attention. Please read through the rules of the mini challenge again if you aren't sure how it works. In the post before this one, Sophie has also given another brief explanation on how it works.

If you have questions , please do not hesitate to ask!

Please let the team know which words or numbers you are reading for or could read for next.

2. And this is an important issue.
I understand when people are busy - we all have lives after all. I also understand if you can't constantly be chatting on the thread.

But, this is a team challenge.

It requires interaction and coordination from the entire team and regular check-ins.

Like we did with the colour cards and reverse cards at the beginning of the month. That was awesome!

So I'd like to ask all of you to please check into the thread a little more often, interact with your team mates and let's rock that mini challenge!!

3. While we're on the topic of team work... There is a second part to the mini challenge (other than what you see on the team spreadsheet) and that requires us to compile a recipe .

Please have a look at Sophie's recipe suggestion and let us know if this is okay or if you'd like to see something more/different etc etc.

Thank you! :-)

4. Isn't that galactic unicorn cake awesome?? Wish I could create cakes like that!

5. I don't bite - honest!

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments I can't believe the month is nearly at an end!! Reading time today had been minimal with swimming lesson, seeing my dad, sister and niece and meeting the neighbours new cats.

The unicorn cake looks incredible.

I'm going to push the you not biting thing and point out that you've got 2 point 2s...

*headdesk*

And I thought I'd been awake already at the time, having arrived at work already... oh well ;-)

message 411: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Getting to work on autopilot is very easy - doesn't say anything about how awake you were at that point (or at least it is for me).

message 412: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Also ouch on the 2star rating!

message 413: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sherbear89) For the mini challenge, can multiple words be used for the same book or does it have to be a different book for each word?

message 414: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sherbear89) I ask because the book I’m reading has the word Passionfruit on the cover but the word white in the text.

message 415: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments It's one word per book, so in your case, I would definitely go for the more difficult one and use passionfruit :-)

But it's always good to have options in case switching needs to happen.

message 416: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments It has to be a different book for each task. Given the 2 words that book might work for, I'd keep it for passionfruit - white is more likely to come up again

message 417: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Sophie wrote: "Getting to work on autopilot is very easy - doesn't say anything about how awake you were at that point (or at least it is for me)."

Eh... yeah... sort of. I take the bus and read on it and then I'm out in the cold for a while before I'm at work, so technically, I should be awake, but probably not as much as I should be hehe.

Aaaand yes, it was almost a 1 star rating because the book was a piece of work, to be quite honest. Ah well ;-)

message 418: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Will stay well clear of it in that case!

My drive to work gets a bit like that sometimes, audiobooks help.

message 419: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments From the captaiins group it's been agreed that a book with a white cover will work for cornflour.

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments No Middle Name The Complete Collected Jack Reacher Short Stories by Lee Child

I'm about to start this. I think the writing on it counts as the colour of either a starfruit or lime - anyone think differently?

message 421: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Alternatively I might read Elements Combine (The Changeling Triology Book 1) by S. E. Nielsen which has a starfruit on the cover and is on KU. It's got no ratings and is 504p which makes me slightly nervous...

Yeah, I think that colour could work for starfruit or lime. Maybe more the starfruit as the lime (usually) has an even stronger colour.

I'd definitely stay clear of the other one for now but just because it's so long. No ratings isn't necessarily a bad thing but if it isn't good and it's 500 pages... it can be a drag, especially since you might feel inclined to read it because we need a starfruit for the mini hehe.

Thats okay when I get home tomorrow I will add my remaining completed reads to the feed which I think will be about another 12-13 books.

message 429: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Raven,

Childrens' books need to be verified with arbookfinder and they need to be 25k words or more.

Unfortunately none of the Worst Witch books fall into that category as they are all below that mark, most under 15k even.

I hope you enjoyed them though! I hear they're very good :-)

Sorry you went to the trouble of posting them all in detail, but rules are rules!

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Hi everyone! I'm going to be a bit quiet today as I'm off to my grandmother's 87th birthday party.

Currently 1/3 through the starfruit book and it really needs an editor! The story itself isn't too bad but there's a lot of repetition of the same ideas 3-4 times in 1 paragraph and the main character is a bit of a know it all

message 433: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Good morning!

Oh, lovely! Have a good time :-)

Haha, yeah, KU and Kindle Freebies seem to have that in common that often the books aren't all that great.. :-/

message 434: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Thanks! We've had a great day, lots of yummy food including homebaked desserts that made me think of you all. Just driving home then time to get ready for another week.

Some KU really aren't bad and are on a par with properly published stuff, but some is truly terrible. This is in the middle somewhere.

Do you happen to have one lying around with exactly 120 pages by any chance? That would cover one of the tasks for the mini challenge.

message 444: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Yay thanks Sharon! That'd be great. Once I finish with Starfruit fun, I'll probably aim to do the same. Knowing me I'll pick up a 600p epic though...
