Sharon (sherbear89) My husband and I took my dog to the dog park yesterday and then just relaxed at Hope. I managed to finish two books this week so hopefully I’ll keep the same speed for the challenge.

Lost Boy by Christina Henry
Layoverland by Gabby Noone

Food coma is a suitable start to this! You have the week to recover enough energy to read.

Books that hang over you for that long get a bit painful. I feel too invested to ever stop them.

The Power by Naomi Alderman I have this copy so is on my list for this challenge. Not making me rush to it now E.

message 103: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Glad to see you could finally make it, Jessica! :-)

And happy to see that everyone else still seems to be around as well ;-)

message 104: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Haha, yeaaahh... the reviews I've heard from friends about The Power are a little mixed so I may be paying more attention to its deficits than I might otherwise.

I'll let you know once I'm further in, or done.

I'm going for Reverse then (-: If I got this right, it can be any book some other team member already read, so I looked into your books and immediately found one that has been on my TBR for a while (-:

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

message 106: by Jessica (last edited Jan 26, 2020 12:24PM) (new)

Jessica Eck I also have books for number 6 (title starts with an S)

Sourcery (Discworld, #5; Rincewind #3) by Terry Pratchett

and Skip (author's surname starts with a P)

Wyrd Sisters (Discworld, #6; Witches #2) by Terry Pratchett

I also promised someone that I would buddy read "A Monster Calls" (I'm going to read the German version "Sieben Minuten nach Mitternacht") by Patrick Ness with him, so maybe we can use it for the challenge, too (-: Maybe number 9 (author's surname starts with an N).
Sieben Minuten nach Mitternacht by Patrick Ness

message 107: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Looks good!

Most any book can fit into Uno - one of the beauties of this challenge. :-)

message 108: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments One thing to remember:

The edition you're actually reading and thus putting on your Uno shelf is the one that counts.

So if you're reading an edition other than the English one, that is absolutely fine and we'll use that title to make the book fit for cards :-)

message 109: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Eck Ok, I'll keep that in mind (-:

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Ooookay, let's have a look at the other set of slightly more difficult cards (not really, but they do require a little bit of planning):

Reverse cards

We have 6 of those.

Raven, Jessica and Kate F are already reading for 1 each.

Which leaves us with 3 more. Any takers? :-)

====

Edited: actually, I'll take one. Lots of books that Raven, Kate F and Jessica have read that I have on my TBR, so I'll pick one of those.

2 more takers needed! :-)

If that is the edition of Sourcery you have available are you able to pause on reading it until next month? It has a gorgeous green cover.

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Just so that we all have an idea which cards we need more of as the month goes on, we are starting with:

0 (standalone, 0 in title, letter Z) - 3
1 (1st, 1 or O) - 7
2 (2nd, 2 or T) - 6
3 (3rd, 3 or H) - 7 one in place already
4 (4th, 4 or F) -3
5 (5th, 5 or I) - 9
6 (6th, 6 or S) - 11
7 (7th, 7 or V) - 7
8 (8th, 8 or E) - 8
9 (9th, 9 or N) - 8
Skip - 4 (K or P) - 4
Reverse - 6 (someone else has read) - 4 filled so far
Draw 2 - use a book twice in the hand - 3 of 4 filled
Wild - read 2 books for one card in the hand - 4 in total, 1 filled

I don't mind taking another reverse card.
I could read either Chinese Cinderella The Secret Story of an Unwanted Daughter by Adeline Yen Mah or India Black (Madam of Espionage, #1) by Carol K. Carr or Lord of the Flies by William Golding

message 118: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Personally, I'd go for one that doesn't have a red/blue/green/yellow cover! So, India Black would get my vote in that selection, Raven.

There are 2 more months of Uno, and we're getting more colour cards with every month, so... we'll need a lot of those!! ;-)

I can read Ninth House Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1) by Leigh Bardugo It was previously read by someone and has been on my TBR list since its release. Unless you all would prefer to save it for a number card. Just a thought.

message 121: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments That's great Sharon. I know I've read it before if no one else has.

The same goes for India Black if Raven ends up reading that one.

Kate (kcbond) | 248 comments Thanks Sophie. I think I'm caught up and things make sense. Have played before so that shortens the learning curve a bit too! This week I'm outside Baltimore at a retreat center so too bad we didn't start this week because I have a ton of time to read as opposed to most conferences I'm at. Last week I was in Atlanta at a crazy busy conference then Charleston. I will be so glad to get home on Friday!

First Books -
Beloved (read by Sophie) Reverse and other cards (will fill in later)
A Virgin River Christmas
Still Life

I'll buy the ebook and I just looked it up, it doesn't have a green cover, but even if - I wouldn't be able to wait until March :D I'm newly addicted to Discworld and "Sourcery" is the next one, I want to read at least the next two Discworld books in February ("Sourcery" and "Wyrd Sisters") :D But I'm sure I'll find another green cover for March (-;

I might be slow to get started given that we're staying with friends in Bristol this weekend.

message 138: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 717 comments Halfway through and so far so good. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the rest. Reading it is making me wonder why I thought Sam was the main character from the film advertising (I haven't seen the film)

message 139: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Probably because she's played by Emma Watson ;-)

Honestly though, my first thought as to why that is was that this basically is a perfect summation of Charlie's character, to think that Sam is the main character.

(That sentence makes sense in my head..)

message 140: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I've also decided to pick up Discretion (The Dumonts, #1) by Karina Halle by Karina Halle.

Are you enjoying the book?

I always get goosebumps from just reading the synopsis of books like that and I have a hard time picking them up lately.

message 145: by Jessica (last edited Jan 30, 2020 09:16PM) (new)

Jessica Eck I'm not sure which cards are still needed, but can we make use of "The View from the Cheaper Seats" by Neil Gaiman in February? It's a non-fiction (essays and stuff), so no character names.

I am, it's a true story, I tend to read more historical fiction or based-on true stories, so this is a lot more wordy and a lot of information (if you know what I mean?) but so far I would definitely recommend, if you're like me and enjoy these tragic stories. I'm actually going to visit Auschwitz in April for the first time - very anxious but looking forward to it, it's a strange feeling to look forward to going somewhere so horrible, but I'm a total History buff and I'm so interested in the WW's. But back to the question, yes I'm enjoying it, haha!

It could work for a '7' card as it (-The) begins with a V :)

Oh we still have lots of cards! :-)

Non-Fiction books work as long as the title and/or author name work for a card, so in this case, as Kate already mentioned, for a 7 it would be great because of the V title. Otherwise, it would also work for a 9 card for the author's first name.

I've been there, over 15 years ago, and it still haunts me when I come across books like this. Not all of it, but two particular parts/places of it. You'll probably know which ones they are once you go there. It's an odd place to visit, truth be told, but important, and definitely worth the trip. The only tip I can give you is to take your time.
