2015 Year Long Challenge - Serial Killers
It actually wouldn't be too bad. You would read any of the 5 sub-series or read the entire 40 book series. And now that I'm looking at it....I would be way better off to break it down into all the sub-series. That would get me less points but I wouldn't be wasting them all in one level. Sweet, I must revise!!
Thank you for that link to the Discworld books. I have never been able to figure them out, but this makes so much sense. I have read some of them and skipped others. Now I know why.
You are welcome, Cherie. I'm glad it's helpful. I think it is not only clear and neat, it's also pretty. :)

But I've been making my way through it for a while now, so I'm past the half way mark, which will make it easier. By the time the challenge starts, I'll have less than 15 of 40 to read.
I'm finding that I don't have very many series that I'm in the middle of and a few of the ones I'm in the middle of are series with 15+ books and I've only read one or two. Go figure.
Guess I'll just have to dive into some series that I've been meaning to try out.
I love that image for Discworld. It's the only way I managed to get my head around the series and start it a few years ago.So clarifying. If I choose to now, I could just read say the Death books and count as a series? I don't have to read all 40? I don't think I will but good to know.
I was thinking about that too, Rusalka, so I hope the answer is yes. I have wanted to read Mort for ages.

Comment for Camilla (totally unrelated to the Series discussions), I found exactly the same thing about Book of Life and it wasn't even all that long since I had read the previous one. It just took me forever to get into it and through it - not something that usually happens to me with series!

Glad to know that I'm not the only one with this problem re this book! I have read almost 400 pages and still I can't seem to enjoy it, as I feel that every other page has a name that I should be familiar with but can't remember. I don't want to abandon it, but it certainly is no joy to read.
What an awesome idea! I'm in.

I made myself finish it, but it was in no way as enjoyable as the first two. I was really disappointed.
Sorry if you have answered this one, but I couldn't find it. What about translations?
If there are 8 books say in a series, but only 5 so far have been translated into the language we read, what's the call?

Let's treat them like we do non-published books. If you've finished all 5 translated books then call it done. If you can't read the book, it's not fair to leave you in limbo.
No worries. I just hit all the nordic crime series, and I knew if it didn't get me, it'd get someone.
Hmm and extending that, if only one is translated that we can read, even if it's a series, it wouldn't count? This time I'm looking at The Devotion of Suspect X
Rusalka wrote: "Hmm and extending that, if only one is translated that we can read, even if it's a series, it wouldn't count? This time I'm looking at The Devotion of Suspect X"
That's the way I see it. :)
Darn, that counts one of my trilogies out. I have read the two that have been translated, and the third is published, but I cannot find it translated yet. Oh well, I can leave it and see if it appears in English next year. Plenty to read and not worry about. :)
I think the number of levels is endless. You'll get a badge for challenge completion when you finish at least one level, and after that you can just continue for as long as you like and complete more levels (I'm not sure if there will be badges for every level, that might be a lot of work for Janice!). To complete a level, you need at least 100 points AND you must have finished at least one series :)
I do these challenges in levels, stages, sections, or whatever to accommodate all readers from those who read at a snail's pace to those who read at light speed.Basically, one level is all it takes to complete the challenge.
I may have to set a cap at how many badges I'll give out. Will need to think about that.
Janice, you may give a badge for the few first levels and then to reach certain thresholds...For example, badges for the first 3 levels, and then to reach levels 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. That would give badges for those who read less or will read whole series, but at the same time allowing overachiever to get them later on ;o)
Got 9 Levels posted. Might leave it at nine and do 3 levels each quarter. Whadda you think?G'night folks!
Kind of like the Rainbow Challenge. One rainbow was sufficient, but "let's see how how many we can get" took over. ☺ We will all be serial killers, shouldn't matter how many series we kill. If each level has to include killing a series, regardless of how many books we read, it could get to be a lot of badges for some, less for others. Are they all going to be the same badge or are you going to do one for each level, that is the question?
I absolutely cannot wait to start this challenge in January!!! My TBR is about to get a whole lot longer. Thank you :)

I had an idea for a badge that would "grow" with the levels, and now I'm not sure it's going to work.

LOL. Painted yourself into a corner, huh?
The gophering has been fun anyway! I was just adding series and books to my challenge list. I went all mental on a book sale and bought a bunch of "first in series" ebooks. I just checked on them, and about half are from a "series" that has only one or two books so far. I listed the series and added the books. I know I cannot count them for series killed because there have to be 3 books to count as something killed, but they will still count for a book read for 5 points, right? Like The Passage and The Twelve? (I read the first, but not the 2nd yet. Well - I started once but stopped. I know I have to start over for it to count for 2015, but it would be 5 points, right?) I don't know why I couldn't read it for my Chunkster Challenge, but I could not bring myself to put it on the list. Crazy!
I have not even begun to look at the books on my TBR list. I am just trying to kill off what I already own books for.
darn, darn, darn! I just accidentaly deleted the whole comment with my brilliant badge solution for you. Maybe I will PM you.

Sorry to tell you that you don't get the 5 points for the 2-series books either. That ruling is way back there somewhere.
This is such a great challenge! Last year, I was trying to read the Discworld books in alphabetical order, and got as far as Unseen Academicals before I wandered off and forgot about it. The Discworld posts were a perfect reminder to go back and finish what I started!I'm glad Maya Angelou's autobiographies count as a series. I was midway through them when I got distracted by Goodreads and all the fun challenges.
Janice - No worries. I will revise my lists for all of the 1 and 2 book "series". I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention. I was trying to use up what I already had. I hate bumping into them when I scroll through my book list. I need a speed dating challenge for them, I guess.
We're all good, Cherie. I need an intervention in more ways than one. I didn't realize how many series I've started.
Maybe this has been asked, but I didn't see it:What about recorded books, can we listen as well, or must we use our eyes.
Also, I think that you ruled on this, but I'd like to qualify: What if there's a series entirely written by different authors, like some harlequin series.
Thanks, this looks like fun.
I thought I had specified in the set up that any format is acceptable, but I missed it. However, I think it's pretty much a given that all formats are accepted, given that we haven't had a challenge yet that species the type of format. As for multiple authored series, I'm going to keep things as simple as possible and say no. It's too much like work to evaluate each series as to whether or not it was intended to be written by multiple authors or by someone finishing off a series after the author has died.
Janice, what about The Wheel of Time series? The first 11 books of that series were written by Robert Jordan before he died. The final book of the series was partially written at the time of his death, and his widow chose Brandon Sanderson to complete the work. The scope of the work was ultimately too great for one book, so the final 3 of 14 volumes were completed by Sanderson. I've read the first 11 and had expected to complete the final 3 for this challenge. Based on message 239, does this series not count?
Peggy - I did respond to your question about the Pern books in the same comment that I wrote to Janice about my one and two book series. Looks like the mobile app doesn't like the cute little smiley faces, even though they allow the selection in the comments box. Won't be using them any more.Yes, I did read all of the Pern books. Loved every one of them and read them over and over until they fell apart while waiting for the next book to be published. I read The White Dragon first and fell head over heels for Ruth. The first three books are definately worth persuing, but the Harper Hall stories are my very favorite ones. McCaffrey can write such great characters! I think I read every book she wrote. There were a few that she collaborated with other authors on that I did not care too much for though. I have not read any of the books her son wrote, but I may have them on my TBR. Just not ready yet.
Good to hear you enjoyed them so much Cherie! If the voting for the group read doesn't lead to a book I really really want to read, I'm going to go for a Pern book. But perhaps I should start with the Harper Hall series!
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: "Janice, what about The Wheel of Time series? The first 11 books of that series were written by Robert Jordan before he died. I was worried only having 3 more to finish but it's all good
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: "Janice, what about The Wheel of Time series? The first 11 books of that series were written by Robert Jordan before he died. Travis, Rusalka, and Janice, thanks for clarifying, and I apologize for not looking back on the thread for the answer. Travis, it looks like we'll both be reading the last 3 books of WoT in 2015.
Indeed! I only know coz I asked the question. These threads get huge so it's completely understandable.

However, I would say that this series would be a nightmare for the challenge purpose.
