2015 Year Long Challenge - Serial Killers
Also a possibility indeed :) At least both ways will give you 50 points for reading book 3 and 4 and counting the series when it's finished, instead of 40 when you count it as completed now and take an extra 5 after book 4 is out.

How would you kill it off as a series of 4 before you read the last book?
Wouldn't you kill it off as a trilogy and then just pick up the 5 points after the 4th book was published?
Exactly, you can't kill it as a 4-book-series at this point, but you can act as if you're reading book 3 in a series of 4 and that makes it impossible to kill it yet. Or, alternatively, treat it as a trilogy and kill it now.I think you can either go for the trilogy (5+30) and 5 more when book 4 is out.
Or read the third now (5 points), and finish the series of 4 later in the year (5+40)
Or, like you say, save the 3rd and 4th for later in the year when book 4 is out (5+5+40).
Oh ok. Maybe I didn't read further than the original answer then - So I can read book 3 now and not count series killed until I read book 4 in April.
Also I wanted to check what your thoughts were Janice on The Green Mile - it was published as a series with a number of different parts although now it's all nicely tied up in one book. Could I count the book as a 6 part series, get 60 points for killing it plus 30 points for each individual "book"?
Sarah wrote: "Also I wanted to check what your thoughts were Janice on The Green Mile - it was published as a series with a number of different parts although now it's all nicely tied up in one book..."I'm grinding my teeth on this one. Part of me wants to say no, since all 6 parts total 592 pages. You know me and novellas.

But, I did say that Goodreads was the deciding factor, and it's listed as a series. So, go for it.
Thanks Janice. I didn't realise it was a series until I was checking it out deciding on whether to buy it for my kindle. I'm trying to go with books I already own but if I succumb to temptation then I will include it.
I never knew The Green Mile was a series. I read it years and years ago as one book, but I can't remember if it was divided into separate parts. Nice that you can count it for the challenge!
I read it as one book, too. It wasn't until I was adding books I'd read to my shelves that I learned it had been broken into parts.
I could never figuer it out why they were all listed the way they were on GR until you started talking about this. I have never read the book, but I love the movie.I don't think I have the strength to read it or add it to my series list now though. If I run out of levels, I will think about it, just for you, Janice. ☺
I've just did some back reading in this thread, and boy is it overwhelming! I just skimmed it mostly too! Eek! I do not know about this ficfact site you speak of...I'm a little afraid to investigate it too at this point. hahah! Though it does sound like it could be helpful. Hmmm!

The whole book is around 600 pages long, not that strenuous of a chunkster. It's such a great story, that I'd recommend reading it. I will likely do a reread of it some day.
Mariab, we have a thread about fictfact that could be useful:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Do you mean Robin? Msg 465.
Wrong thread, Cherie. You must think you're above the law now that you're a seasoned killer? LOL! Would you request in the reporting thread... and maybe I'll badge you! (I'll put on my sheriff's badge and arrest you, maybe.)

Please call off the possee!
Is there a minimum length to books? I'm reading chapter books to my kids that can run around 80-90 pages, can I count them in?
Shanna_redwind wrote: "Is there a minimum length to books? The requirement is that the chapter books are listed as series on Goodreads.
What if after finishing the first book in the series I don't want to continue reading them? Do I get 5 points? And may I read a third book in a trilogy and add 30+5 points and count it as finished series? (1st and 2nd book read last year)
Thanks

Yes, and yes. You've got it all figured out.
I just finished book 7 of the Missing series by Margaret Peterson Haddix and thought I killed it, but Goodreads is showing a book 8 Redeemed published January 2015. However, I could only find it on Amazon as a pre-order for September 2015. So, I know you said Goodreads would be the definitive answer about series, but I was hoping I could kill this series now, since I think the Goodreads record is an error. Hope this makes sense.
Lori Z wrote: "I just finished book 7 of the Missing series by Margaret Peterson Haddix and thought I killed it, but Goodreads is showing a book 8 Redeemed published January 2015. H..."Hi Lorie - you can kill it now and pick up the last book for 5 points as a single series read at the end of the year. You just cannot kill the series twice. ☺
I have a question concerning the series that are just beginning... If I am reading the first or the second book in a series in which only 2 books have been published but the third is announced for 2015, can I count the book I read (get 5 points), or do they count only if at least 3 books have already been published when I read it?
Lori Z wrote: "I just finished book 7 of the Missing series by Margaret Peterson Haddix and thought I killed it, but Goodreads is showing a book 8 Redeemed published January 2015. H..."The book isn't even listed on Haddox's website, so we'll go with the Sept 2015 publish date shown on Amazon. Go ahead and kill the series.
Cherie wrote: "Hi Lorie - you can kill it now and pick up the last book for 5 points as a single series read at the end of the year. You just cannot kill the series twice. ☺ "Well, yes and no. If a new book to the series has been published before you finish the series, you must include it. If you finish a series and a new book is scheduled for publication, you may kill the series.
In Lori's case, she can kill the series because the book obviously hasn't been published. Goodreads must have made an error.
Marie Claude wrote: "I have a question concerning the series that are just beginning... Thanks, Janice and Cherie! :) Now off to get points to finish level 1.
Hey everyone,Goodreads just "rolled out" a couple of new features for Series Help.
I'm just copying the announcement here. Try the links and you'll see the new stuff.

We just released a new feature: when you're on the book page for a book in a series, there should now be a feature on the right hand side (scroll down a bit) called Other Books in the Series. We'll show the first 10 books in that carousel, which hopefully will make it easier to navigate through a series from the book page! Check an example here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7......
Also, when you visit the series page, we've added an Other Series by... carousel that will list books in other series by that author. Check an example here: https://www.goodreads.com/series/4341......
Let us know if you have questions or notice anything unusual; hopefully this makes browsing through series less cumbersome! "
Pretty Cool, Huh?
Brilliant. It's reasonably simple, so not sure why they haven't done it earlier, but YAY for more functionality!
Lori Z wrote: "They must have got wind that it's the year of the series!"Ha, that was my first thought when I saw it
Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention, Almeta. I saw it earlier but didn't have time to pass on the info to the group. It will be good for seeing a series at a glance. I do like seeing the series page. Maybe it's because that's what I'm used to. You know what they say about old dogs and new tricks. Still, it's good to have more than one way to get info.
For the moment, I've finished listing all the series I have waiting in the wings to start and finish. It's quite ambitious! Here's the link if you want to peruse the list: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

Debra wrote: "Yep, the Matthew Corbett series is a must!"AND I only have one left to read!
Somehow I skipped The Providence Rider and read The River of Souls instead. Duh!

Thanks, Beth. I did not go all of the way back far enough.
@ Peggy's comment in 450. Or save the 3rd book, wait until the 4th is published and then read both in the same level and take 40 + 10 for 50 points.
I've given myself a head ache over how to maximize points, read the least amount of books and get the most number of levels.
I have written my yearly performance review and sent it off to my boss and now I am going home to go to bed. Starting at 1pm and working till after 9 is not a long term goal for me, but it is really nice and quiet.
