Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Greetings Space Opera Fans!

Each month your SOF Borg Queen scopes out the nominations that won the Random.org randomizer and uses the MOD PICK to balance out the offerings so there's something for everybody to read. This month, however, the randomizer was kind to everybody, so I shall pick a book based purely upon what nominations people made that piqued my interest that I hope to find time to read.

Therefore, since I've been reminded I obtained an Advanced Review Copy of Red Rising by Pierce Brown like two (or was that three) years ago at a conference, got it autographed, and then promptly buried it (hey ... nobody is perfect), I have dug it out of the icky spider closet, dusted it off, and yes, I have an autographed ARC...

Red Rising (Red Rising Trilogy, #1) by Pierce Brown Pierce Brown

[*Neiner neiner neiner....*]

So ... Mr. Brown ... I apologize for being a jerk and not reading your book previously, but I'll make up for it now by making it MOD PICK for December :-)

"Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so..."

Richard Saar | 3 comments This is actually one of the books on my Christmas list just recently sent to family and friends... there were many books on the list (with Pictures even!) If it isn't a gift I'll be buying anyway as I'm keen to read and review it, the concept sounds pretty good.

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) I've got it...

And it's autographed...

Can't believe I lost track of it and never read it. But it was at one of those conventions where you encounter 500 authors you've never heard of on a panel and then when you see them handing out books and signing them later, you snag it. It got buried in a house renovation, but the moment I saw the cover, I remembered I had it and went a-hunting through old sheetrock dust alley. :-)

Derek | 5 comments Tell me this wasnt an awesome book. I seriously wish I had an autographed version of this book.

That Guy Found this group yesterday and this was the first book i tried on the page. I Finished it and preordered the next within a day so i guess i liked it ;) I usually prefer longer reads, but I couldn't put this little one down till it was done, and i was disappointed to find out I have to wait for the next one.

Jessica (jessical1961) This book is on my TBR list. I have heard great things about and can't wait to read it. Got to finish some of the others I have first though.

My wife bought me the illustrated edition of Dan Brown's Inferno for Christmas so I will read that before I buy any new books. But Red Rising is right at the top of the list when I do buy some more.

Monica (monicae) I appear to be somewhat alone in my assessment, but I am not a fan of this book. Did not like for reasons beyond "not my cup of tea". Very surprised by it's success so far.

What reasons, Monica? I haven't read it yet, but I'd like to get other people's opinions.

Monica (monicae) I found it to be overly brutal and violent to no real meaning. Some violence is fine but in this book it serves primarily to help identify the really bad guys. It is in my view very sexist w/ all the female characters having some male for support in order to prevail. The plot is superficial and generic. It has been done many times and much better (in my view) in Hunger Games, the Matrix, Star Wars, Highlander etc. The author seems to have avoided the villains twirling their mustaches by making them 17 yrs during the book. Lots of gratuitous rapes, disfigurement, and damsels in distress. Okay maybe not gratuitous, the author told us it was for freedom or something... Don't get me started about the lack of diversity as we colonize the solar system. The only diversity in this book is gender.

That Guy I think the book is done well for the same reason some others may not like it. Many books that fall into this realm often fall short because they come off too PG... This was refreshing because it was not told from the point of view of a fragile adolescent girl... something very common in coming of age or hardship books recently. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it is just a bit overdone in this readers opinion. I found myself attached to some of the characters and the story, and pondering its societal likeness to current ways of thinking. As in all cases it is not for everyone, but i really enjoyed it.
