I especially enjoyed all the power in the book, too. So much magic! And the ending was perfect. Now the long wait for the next book.
My only complaint is the horrible, cheap looking cover. And so misleading. Mad Rogan dresses to the hilt in custom-fitted clothing, all the time. Nevada wears jeans and casual clothes. So nothing on this cover works for me. The alternate cover (as shared on the Ilona Andrews blog) was much better, though I wasn't fond of it, either. But if you can overlook that, the book is well worth the read.

Right from the start I liked Nevada and her crazy family. In a world filled with magic and egomaniacs they seemed normal or what passes for normal in this world. While I hated how Nevada was pulled into the case I thought she did a great job working it, often doing better than those egomaniacs because she used logic and her brain, while they wanted to pound away with magic.
I'm on the fence with Mad Rogan. There is a part of me that really likes him, like when he would teach Nevada about her magic and help her with her contract. But there is a larger part of me that doesn't care for him for the same reasons that Nevada has. What I do know is that with his last comments and what Mad Rogan learned at the end things will become very interesting for a while.

I can understand your hesitation with Mad Rogan. He's all the things I normally don't like in a "hero." But there's something about him that makes me think there's buried treasure there. :) I can't wait to learn more. And I do love how Nevada didn't let him bulldoze her into anything.
I'm with you on her crazy family. Loved them. I predict another winner here.

I think he is one that will have to grow on me.

Whilst I hate to compare Mad & Nevada with Kate & Curran, it was just the feeling they gave. Kate didn't put up with any crap, and neither does Nevada. And Mad/Curran have oodles of power and are the biggest, baddest dude around. Just the way I like it.
And I love the fact that we don't get info dumps in any of their books. They trust their readers to pick up the world-building along the way.

I'm another on the fence about Mad Rogan. I really like him as a character, but I don't know how I feel about him as Nevada's love interest. There's a fine line between charmingly cocky and overbearing ass, and he's solidly on the wrong side of it. At the same time, the epilogue makes it pretty clear that at least some of how Nevada views Rogan is incorrect, so I'm holding out hope that maybe he isn't as big of an ass as he seems.

If he'd been absolutely fantastic from the 1st book, it wouldn't make a great series, now would it?
It's always better when the characters learn and grow :)

I kept waffling with him to, but in the end I decided I like him and that he's going to be transformed by Nevada. It sounded like he hadn't been raised in a loving environment and was raised to believe he was superior. The first impression he makes is not a good one, but think back to him helping his cousin. He didn't need facts or excuses as to why she wanted him to help find her son, he just did it. He didn't humiliate her, he didn't care whether her son was guilty or not. After finding out her reason for seeking his help he just did it and didn't ask for anything in return. At least not that I can recall. I think there's so much more to him than we know.
He seems to have a distorted sense between what's right and what's wrong. It's almost as if some kind of sensor hasn't been set properly, but I suspect that has more to do with the way he was raised. Look at the way he treats his employees. On the surface it may appear he selects them for their background and pays their debts to gain their loyalty, but I suspect there's more to it. I think he relates to them and doesn't like the way they've been cast aside. I admit I kind of like the way Ilona Andrews made him such a complex individual that we can't decide whether to love or hate and that Nevada seems to feel the same way, but I love that Nevada's taking a "wait and see" stance with him while proceeding cautiously.

See you bring up things that are part of the reason I'm on the fence with him. He has potential and I think he will be good by the end of the story arc, but for now I'm still a bit leery.
You bring up good points of Mad Rogan's employees. I think he purposely picks the down and out as a way to protect them, but doesn't phrase it that way because he can't be seen as nice or so he thinks.

I'm glad you liked the book. I declared Rogan long ago my new book boyfriend. lol

You know, he seems like one big contradiction. It's hard to see the real him under the walls he's built around himself. My guess is everyone, since he's been a child, has wanted him for their own purpose not for him. You know what I mean? They want to use him and Nevada isn't that type. I think the Carnations kind of symbolize he's willing to change, but flowers alone won't sway Nevada's feelings and I love what she did with them. I also think dispite the way she reacted she was touched by the gesture. I have to laugh though and wonder what she's getting herself into. I think Rogan's the ultimate alpha male who isn't used to a female who will stand up to him and tell him like it is. That is why I think this series will lead us on a merry dance that I am so looking forward to. I can't wait to see what it will take to win Nevada over. I predict it will be good.

I totally agree with you on this, it will be fun to read about.

We can share him.

lol I think we'll be sharing him with many others. :)

Very True. :)

Personally, I also think we'll find that Nevada's family has been hiding the truth about the strength and uniqueness of her power from her. It will be interesting to see what comes to light, and if her abilities grow and change. And I think Mad Rogan guesses that she is his equal in power, or he wouldn't trust her as he does at the end. And he knows she doesn't know the truth.

I was really shocked at who was pulling the strings.
As for Mad Rogan he is quite the complex character but so is Nevada.
BTW after I was done with the book I hated the cover.

Honestly I could not get past the couple
