Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments The December BOM is Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .
Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.
Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.
Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

Marcia (marciameara) | 161 comments Read this as soon as it came out, being a big Ilona Andrews fan. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and have to say Mad Rogan pushed all the right buttons for me. I loved that Nevada put him in his place, and I can't wait to read more. I really want to know his back story. There's so much more to him than meets the eye.

I especially enjoyed all the power in the book, too. So much magic! And the ending was perfect. Now the long wait for the next book.

My only complaint is the horrible, cheap looking cover. And so misleading. Mad Rogan dresses to the hilt in custom-fitted clothing, all the time. Nevada wears jeans and casual clothes. So nothing on this cover works for me. The alternate cover (as shared on the Ilona Andrews blog) was much better, though I wasn't fond of it, either. But if you can overlook that, the book is well worth the read.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments As this author is one of my favorites I'm always excited to read a new book from them, let alone a new series. I thought this was a great start to a new series. We didn't have a big info dump with all the rules of the world and it wasn't overly complicated.

Right from the start I liked Nevada and her crazy family. In a world filled with magic and egomaniacs they seemed normal or what passes for normal in this world. While I hated how Nevada was pulled into the case I thought she did a great job working it, often doing better than those egomaniacs because she used logic and her brain, while they wanted to pound away with magic.

I'm on the fence with Mad Rogan. There is a part of me that really likes him, like when he would teach Nevada about her magic and help her with her contract. But there is a larger part of me that doesn't care for him for the same reasons that Nevada has. What I do know is that with his last comments and what Mad Rogan learned at the end things will become very interesting for a while.

I can understand your hesitation with Mad Rogan. He's all the things I normally don't like in a "hero." But there's something about him that makes me think there's buried treasure there. :) I can't wait to learn more. And I do love how Nevada didn't let him bulldoze her into anything.

I'm with you on her crazy family. Loved them. I predict another winner here.

I think he is one that will have to grow on me.

Sandra | 4734 comments I loved it 4 stars worth and am looking forward to the re-read.

Whilst I hate to compare Mad & Nevada with Kate & Curran, it was just the feeling they gave. Kate didn't put up with any crap, and neither does Nevada. And Mad/Curran have oodles of power and are the biggest, baddest dude around. Just the way I like it.

And I love the fact that we don't get info dumps in any of their books. They trust their readers to pick up the world-building along the way.

Rhosyn Goodfellow (faerytaleonfire) | 3 comments Finished last night, and I really liked it. I totally want to be Grandma Frida when I grow up.

I'm another on the fence about Mad Rogan. I really like him as a character, but I don't know how I feel about him as Nevada's love interest. There's a fine line between charmingly cocky and overbearing ass, and he's solidly on the wrong side of it. At the same time, the epilogue makes it pretty clear that at least some of how Nevada views Rogan is incorrect, so I'm holding out hope that maybe he isn't as big of an ass as he seems.

Sandra | 4734 comments I think we're going to witness Mad's change to a cool hero rather than the egotistical ass he is at present.

If he'd been absolutely fantastic from the 1st book, it wouldn't make a great series, now would it?

It's always better when the characters learn and grow :)

I kept waffling with him to, but in the end I decided I like him and that he's going to be transformed by Nevada. It sounded like he hadn't been raised in a loving environment and was raised to believe he was superior. The first impression he makes is not a good one, but think back to him helping his cousin. He didn't need facts or excuses as to why she wanted him to help find her son, he just did it. He didn't humiliate her, he didn't care whether her son was guilty or not. After finding out her reason for seeking his help he just did it and didn't ask for anything in return. At least not that I can recall. I think there's so much more to him than we know.

He seems to have a distorted sense between what's right and what's wrong. It's almost as if some kind of sensor hasn't been set properly, but I suspect that has more to do with the way he was raised. Look at the way he treats his employees. On the surface it may appear he selects them for their background and pays their debts to gain their loyalty, but I suspect there's more to it. I think he relates to them and doesn't like the way they've been cast aside. I admit I kind of like the way Ilona Andrews made him such a complex individual that we can't decide whether to love or hate and that Nevada seems to feel the same way, but I love that Nevada's taking a "wait and see" stance with him while proceeding cautiously.

See you bring up things that are part of the reason I'm on the fence with him. He has potential and I think he will be good by the end of the story arc, but for now I'm still a bit leery.

You bring up good points of Mad Rogan's employees. I think he purposely picks the down and out as a way to protect them, but doesn't phrase it that way because he can't be seen as nice or so he thinks.

Leigh | 1219 comments I just finished reading this and loved it! I am so Team Rogan! Yes, he has issues, but who doesn't.

You know, he seems like one big contradiction. It's hard to see the real him under the walls he's built around himself. My guess is everyone, since he's been a child, has wanted him for their own purpose not for him. You know what I mean? They want to use him and Nevada isn't that type. I think the Carnations kind of symbolize he's willing to change, but flowers alone won't sway Nevada's feelings and I love what she did with them. I also think dispite the way she reacted she was touched by the gesture. I have to laugh though and wonder what she's getting herself into. I think Rogan's the ultimate alpha male who isn't used to a female who will stand up to him and tell him like it is. That is why I think this series will lead us on a merry dance that I am so looking forward to. I can't wait to see what it will take to win Nevada over. I predict it will be good.

Sara | 860 comments I really enjoyed the book too. It took me a few weeks to finish it due to time constraints so the plot confused me at first as I couldn't remember if Rogan or naked chest guy was suppose to be the male lead. I also loved Grandma Frida.

message 25: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara | 742 comments I too found Rogan a complex and alternately super attractive alpha or overbearing and scary asshole. I'm glad Nevada has her family as a balance against him, as she's clearly attracted and sees that he has a hidden vulnerable side.

Personally, I also think we'll find that Nevada's family has been hiding the truth about the strength and uniqueness of her power from her. It will be interesting to see what comes to light, and if her abilities grow and change. And I think Mad Rogan guesses that she is his equal in power, or he wouldn't trust her as he does at the end. And he knows she doesn't know the truth.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments The grandmother was awesome!!

I was really shocked at who was pulling the strings.

As for Mad Rogan he is quite the complex character but so is Nevada.

BTW after I was done with the book I hated the cover.
