Kristie | 5928 comments I've read quite a few books this month. I most recently finished The Last Thing He Told Me and The Henna Artist, which I thought were really good.

I'm currently reading The Family Plot. It's good, but I expected more. I'm at 83% and at this point the ending can have a big effect on my overall opinion of the book.

PattyMacDotComma Strange Bliss: Essential Stories is a collection of six of Katherine Mansfield's excellent, quirky short stories. People are just as selfish and awkward and silly today as they were when she was writing.

PattyMacDotComma Apples Never Fall is the latest from Aussie author Liane Moriarty. It's a family tree of tennis players, the kind of varied group of characters she's so well-known for. I wish I'd liked it better.

PamG (lynguy1) | 1025 comments I read a paperback that I purchased 3 or 4 years ago from a used bookstore clearance shelf that has been languishing on my TBR bookshelf. Death by the Light of the Moon Death by the Light of the Moon (Claire Malloy, #7) by Joan Hess by Joan Hess. It's a cozy mystery and the seventh book in the series. I've read one other book in the series. Unfortunately, this one didn't work for me.

Kristie | 5928 comments I'm currently reading The Last House on Needless Street The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward and The Orphan Witch A Novel by Paige Crutcher The Orphan Witch: A Novel.

The Last House on Needless Street has been interesting and is quite a curious story. I have a theory as to what's going on, but I'm not completely convinced that I'm correct.

The Orphan Witch has been a little slow-going, which was unexpected. There is too much detail of the spells and learning process for me. The best analogy I can make is if you were reading Harry Potter and had to sit through all his lessons with him while he was learning about magic and spells in addition to his outside adventures. There has also been a strange love interest added to the mix. I haven't decided what I think about it yet, but the MC's thoughts about the other person are pretty repetitive, which I don't care for. Overall, it's not bad, just not quite what I was expecting or hoping for. I'm less than halfway through though, so it could still turn out well.

PamG (lynguy1) | 1025 comments This is one that I finished reading in August, but couldn't post my review until now. My 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

A Terrible Fall of Angels A Terrible Fall of Angels by Laurell K. Hamilton by Laurell K. Hamilton. This is the first book in the Zaniel Havelock urban fantasy / supernatural suspense / paranormal police procedural series. She builds a new world for readers to marvel and explore. Overall, this book was an entertaining and thought-provoking paranormal police investigation with strong religious and belief overtones. It is definitely a departure from the previous series written by this author in many ways. However, she continues to bring great characters, entertaining and unique story lines, action, and suspense together in her novels.

Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe. I'm only moderately interested in the opioid crisis. I read this because I had really enjoyed his Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland. And Keefe once again delivered a story about crimes that go unpunished and the background history which enabled that.

Kristie | 5928 comments I just finished Ink and Bone. It was really good, but leaves you with a "to be continued..." ending. There are 5 books in the series and I guess you have to read them all to find out what happens. I also found two very short stories online and I'm looking forward to reading them.

I just started Under the Whispering Door and It seems like it will be a quick read. I enjoy Klune's writing.
