Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments Just finished Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift as part of my 'read the classics personal challenge. I did have to keep reminding myself it was 300 years old and it was certainly far from a complete pleasure. Very interesting though.

Here is my review, be warned, it is almost as long as the actual book....

Enjoyed it so much more than I was expecting to, very pleased it's made it to the 2020 Miles Franklin longlist.

The first book by Birch I read was the same; I just could not believe how much I liked it!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments I have to admit that I have had Sebastian Barry's 19th Century novel Days Without End sitting in my TBR for a while, but when I saw that the sequel/companion volume, A Thousand Moons was available on NetGalley, I thought I' better hop to and read this first. And as you'd expect from this author, a moving and powerful read, full of beautiful prose, even from the voice of this uneducated 19th C Irish immigrant.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments I love audio books! Having a story read to me while I do chores, drive somewhere, bliss. I love Bolinda audio books. I love Wollongong City Library. I love Borrowbox.
I'd already read Anne Tyler's latest, Redhead by the Side of the Road, but I really enjoyed having it read to me by MacLeod Andrews, and I'm sure I laughed out loud even more than when I was reading from the book.

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 2304 comments Continuing my impulsive re-read of LOTR, I've just finished The Two Towers

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, #2) by J.R.R. Tolkien

Tolkien sure does love describing plants!

I'm still enamoured, though. No change to those 5 stars. :)

Intriguing, I don't remember that much plant love, unless you mean the Ents?

Haha to elaborate, during book 4, Tolkien likes to describe Frodo and Sam's surrounds. Which involves flowers, grass, herbs, trees, etc.

Ah yes, the swamps? I seem to remember when I first read them that section seemed to go on forever.

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I'm sure a lot of readers are familiar with Montessori schools, but I bet they don't know Maria Montessori was the first woman in Italy to go to medical school. Maria Montessori by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara is designed for little kids, but I learned a lot, too.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Aussie author Cassie Hamer's second novel, The End of Cuthbert Close is an enjoyable tale about the residents of a cul-de-sac that has a few red herrings to keep you guessing. I will definitely be trying out the Melted Snickers Mug Cake!!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Having thoroughly enjoyed the first Perveen Mistry book, A Murder at Malabar Hill, I would have to say that Sujata Massey has outdone it with the second book in this series, The Satapur Moonstone, and I really hope she has a lot more of them planned. I'd probably never choose to read about India in the 1920s, but with Perveen Mistry guiding me through, I definitely want more.
