What are you reading? - 2020
I finished off a few books that I had on the go.The Fated Sky was very enjoyable. Much grittier than book one of the trilogy. I love this authors self narration!
This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor was very funny. The author was a qualified doctor who worked for the british national health service. In a very engaging way he detailed his working life. It was funny, sad and a daming indictment of the service. My first 5 star read of the decade - and non-fiction at that!
The Art of Hiding was a the only book that I started and finished this this weekend. It was not my usual style of reading matter but it was perfect for the way I was feeling yesterday - a comfort read and the ideal refuge from the storm that is battering Ireland this weekend. A nice calm book about someone elses family crisis ;-p Oh, and another decent author narration.
Today I start Son of the Shadows.

Margo wrote: "Oh Lisa.. I'm happy I only paid 50p for The Hunting Party ;-)"Lol! I wish I had only paid 50p for it, Margo 😉
I am struggling through the group read. I am not a big non fiction reader. The books events show humans at their worst. I will finishKillers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. But I have started Brush Back. I need a break from all the reality.
Renee wrote: "I am struggling through the group read. I am not .."Renee - I totally get that. I ended up reading Love & Gelato the same time that I was reading Killers of the Flower Moon because I needed a light romance to balance the reality.

Other 5-stars were The Beautiful Mystery, How the Light Gets In, Glass Houses, The Brutal Telling, A Great Reckoning, and Kingdom of the Blind. The long of it, I like her books a lot! Looks like she has a new one scheduled for September.
I finished my group themed read, Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident and really enjoyed it!Next up is my monthly challenge read, Geisha, a Life.
I started Deathless a couple of days ago, but it just didn't gel with me at all so I have abandoned it.I am now going to start The Unforgetting
.
Finished and enjoyedThe Homesman

I really enjoyed that one, Bash.
Just finished reading a book today - Hiding in the Light by Rifqa Bary. It’s so good! (on Overdrive, audio and text) Be prepared your be mad!!
I DNFed The Lost Letters of William Woolf. The narration wasn't great and the story wasn't going anywhere.
I finished Daisy Jones & The Six for a buddy read. I'm going to start The Good Hawk tonight for my 2020 release read. I hope I can finish it before the toppler starts.
mars wrote: "I'm reading The Girl With All the Gifts by M R Carey. A thrilling zombie read."I really enjoyed that book, and its sequel.
I'm not usually a fan of zombie stories but I liked this one. I have book 2 on my reading list for th8s year.
I finished 2 books within an hour from each other. Feels like making progress again, finally! Daisy Jones & The Six was awesome, 5 stars. Deathless was a disappointment for me, 2 stars.I'm going to start Mademoiselle Chanel tomorrow for the monthly challenge.
I finished Daisy Jones & The Six for a buddy read which i didn''t end up getting the chance to comment in. Yet. It was such a quick read. I flew through it. Now back to The Godfather.
Maybe I should have listened to the Tom Hanks audio of The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, which has had some rave reviews.
3.5★ Link to my "Dutch House" review
Address Unknown by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor is a terrific story, first published in the US in 1938, as Hitler was promising to restore German prosperity. It had an amazing impact then, and it's no less amazing now. READ IT!

I just finished The Silent CompanionsDisappointing, cliche, Not sure why its a best seller? I chose this since it sounded interesting and to get myself out to my favourite genre (Young adult) , honestly what a drag...300 pages of a story thats not worth that many pages.
Anyway, I'll start reading The Raven Boys
going back to my favourite genre.
Finished Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup
by John CarreyrouMy Review: www.goodreads.com/review/show/3190692883
I am readingTony's Wife. This author is a favorite of mine. She captures the dynamics of an Italian American family. Many of her chars remind me of my own family. That being said, this book is not really doing it for me. I hope it gets better. Thw first char introduced is a teenager in the midst of first love. It is just too overdone for my taste. I am not in the mood for teenage angst
It's hardly the Definitive Dylan, but this book for kids, Bob Dylan, by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara is a good introduction to a unique singer-songwriter and the first musician to win the Nobel Prize for music.
4★ Link to my link review with a bit of the artwork
I love Maggie O'Farrell's books, but this one, about herself, is something else again! I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death is 17 stories from her life, which could have been a lot shorter at least 17 times!

JUDI DENCH! Do yourself a favour and spend a few minutes listening to this little radio play online. SO good! Two in Torquay by Alan Bennett, who plays the role opposite Judy. It's a quarter of an hour that will brighten your whole day!

Finished The Hungry Road: From the bestselling author of Under the Hawthorn Tree
My Review: www.goodreads.com/review/show/3192251439
Although the toppler is still going on, I've started The Bear and the Serpent. I won't have enough time to start and finish a audiobook for the toppler, so I've gone back to my regular scheduled plan.
I'm still reading Darling Rose Gold for the toppler, but I also started The Institute on audio. I considered trying to fit in another audiobook for the toppler, but figured I wouldn't be able to do that and finish my Kindle book too, so I started something else for during my commute today.
I finished Moloka'i and I sorry to report that it was only 2 stars to me. I felt really underwhelmed. I know many of you liked it.On Sunday I am starting the buddy read of The Starless Sea, so I am not starting anything today. I will try to read a couple of middle grade novels I got as ARCs.

We all react differently to books. I've 'dnf' books that have great ratings.
I agree Molaka'i was a favorite of mine. It like the books we are voting on. Many are voting for Lab Girl. I despise that type of book. Memoirs are something I steer well clear of, I did like Educated. But I find most memoirs to be not to my liking. I would rather read a footnoted biography the someone interpretation of their life. Its a to each his own thing
I recommend this to anyone dealing with anxiety and/or depression - their own, or someone else’s. Your Own Kind of Girl is Aussie singer and entertainer Clare Bowditch’s raw, often funny, memoir, which includes lots of tips and a good reference list. The cover is one of my favourites!

I read Without Charity for the toppler. It was okay. Readable, but didn't really bring anything new to the table. I gave it 3 stars.I'm now starting Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe for the monthly challenge.
Finished and unfortunately didn’t enjoy The Essex Serpent

I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed this book, Patty. I really love Clare's music, but am always cautious when people I admire go cross genre. Sometimes it works, but other times it really doesn't and screams of a money grab.
But your about sixth in the list of artists and friends who have recommended this book this week. I'll check it out for sure!!
For those who have never heard of Clare Bowdich and the Feeding Set, check out her song "Divorcee at 23" which was the first I had heard of her, and was just beautiful storytelling in song.
Janice wrote: "We all react differently to books. I've 'dnf' books that have great ratings."When I read Moloka'i's blurb I thought it seemed to have everything I love and expect from a great historical fiction, but then the magic never happened to me. That is the frustrating part, I think.
But sure, GR friends reviews and ratings are a great indicator if you kind of know their taste, but reading is always a personal experience at the end.
Exactly Sandra! We all bring our personal experiences and viewpoints into play as well. Hawaii is a huge part of my life since I have family there and have visited many times. I've visited Molokai'i where my nephew's wife is from. Their wedding was there. Having stood on the cliff that overlooks Kalaupapa, I could picture the scenes described in the book. Those things may have influenced my overall experience of the book as well.
I read 7 books for the toppler and have now returned to the originally scheduled program. On audiobook - The Bear and the Serpent. On print - Geisha, a Life. I have two other books I want to start/finish in February, but I'm not certain I'll accomplish that.
